602 saves. All time leader......Is he the best closer of all times? How does he compare to the greats of yesteryear? Are saves cheap compared to years ago??

Clearly and unquestionably the best closer ever, in my mind. I haven't looked at any stats, but that's certainly my initial thought on the matter.

Do you know how I know he's awesome? When he comes into the game I know it's over. F looking at the stats.

I don't care about whether he's the best or not...

I think it's amazing he throws 2 pitches...neither being a breaking ball...and gets everyone out. That's awesome. Not only that, it probably means he can pitch another 5-6 years...and wouldn't that be something?

I hope he keeps going until he stops being able to bring it 90+...70 IP a year...making $15M...being a YANKEE...living the dream...

hell...retirement age is what? 65 or so? This mother fucker can pitch until he's 50+, still retire young, and bank another $75M...

that's what will impress me

There's no question he's the greatest closer ever. It's not even close.
The interesting conversation I heard this morning is whether he's the greatest Yankee pitcher of all time. Whitey Ford is probably #1, but I don't know any Yankee pitcher that would be #2 over Rivera.

His out pitch is singular though, he only has one out pitch. I think he's awesome, but I don't like him, really.

He's a Yankee, so i hate him.

Right, but who cares? The point is how effective is he, whether he has one out pitch or four. He's been the most effective closer over the longest period of time, and has performed in every kind of high-pressure situation you can imagine.

I dont know...hes great and all...certainly one of the greatest closers of all time, but i just have a hard time comparing him to closers from other eras because closers in the past pitched more innings per year.

I detest the Yankees. Here is my favorite closer.

For comparisons sake, look how many more innings a guy like Quiz would pitch every year compared to Rivera.

For what its worth during the 96 run he pitched the 7th and 8th and was lights out. That year if you trailed the Yankees after the 6th, goodnight.

Hard to compare, but you also can't fault him about the era he pitches in. Like it was mentioned, the guy has had only 2 pitches since 1997. Thats insane that he hasn't be solved. Maybe the most overlooked thing about him is what he does to pitchers around him. Yankee pitchers always talk about how great their cutters become just from learning from him. Watch David Robinson, his delivery and cutter, if he was hispanic you would think he was Mo.

I am biased, but I don't think its even close. Although I am a Yankee fan, I am not in love or blind to all the crap most Yankee fans are.

Anyway, Rivera is also a pretty humble guy and does a ton in the community. If you hear him talk you can understand why he doesn't get rattled. He literally thinks he was blessed with this gift and everything else is gravy.
