View Full Version : Chiefs X-Factor's Inside the Huddle-mauled

In order not to offend our readers, the following has been rated MA-17 (mature audiences only) by the Society of American Journalists and Deranged Sports Columnists (SAJDSC). Why the unusually harsh rating standard?

First of all, Freddy Krueger would be squeamish at the way Chiefs players have been lost to season-ending injuries. And the 89-10 combined mauling that Kansas City has suffered the past two weeks at the hands of Buffalo and Detroit would have been edited from the ďTexas Chainsaw MassacreĒ for excessive violence.

Ugly is too kind of a word to describe the start to KCís season. Yet, for as agonizing as itís been, thereís one thing to keep in mind. The Chiefs are just one game out of first place in the AFC West. And, with a win at San Diego on Sunday, we could be in first place. Possible? Yes. Easy? Not by any stretch.
While Kansas Cityís play has been as unbearable as Rosanne Barrís singing, keep in mind that the gap between being terrible and being in the playoffs is surprisingly narrow in the NFL.

Just look at the numbers. For example, quarterback Matt Cassel was 15-of-22 against Detroit. On most Sundays, thatís pretty respectable.
Unfortunately, three of seven that werenít caught by Casselís receivers were picked off by Detroit defenders. Cassel had seven interceptions the entire 2010 season. Heís had four in two games this season. Remember that a year ago, Cassel was an All-Pro quarterback with only two weapons in the passing game - tight end Tony Moeaki and wideout Dwayne Bowe. We lost Moeaki, but Leonard Pope is more than adequate. Weíve also added wideout Steve Breaston and, perhaps this week, weíll see the return of Jonathan Baldwin.
It wouldnít take that much to revive a passing offense that ranks 32nd in the league (110.5 ypg). But if thatís going to happen someone else has to step up. Bowe has 118 receiving yards in two games. No one else on the team has more than 33 yards.

Perhaps even more amazing is that the Chiefs are ranked seventh in the league with 129.5 yards rushing per game. Thatís despite having Jamaal Charles for basically one game. Our success as a team rests with our running game and that can still happen with Dexter McCluster, Thomas Jones and LeíRon McLain as a backfield by committee.Critics say that McCluster is too small to be an every-down back. But they said the same thing about Charles before he rushed for 1,120 yards in 2009 and 1,467 yards in 2010.
The NFL is all about opportunity. When the opportunity comes, who will emerge as the next great star?

When runningbacks Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson no longer figured into KCís future, somebody had to step into that role. Now that Charles is gone for the season, itís McClusterís opportunity to show whether heís capable of being a great NFL runningback.Keeping Jackie Battle on the roster adds to our depth and perhaps McLain can recapture the season he had in 2008 when he rushed for 902 yards.

Whereís the defense? After giving up 91 points in just two games, the bigger question is with the defense and, in particular, a linebacker corps that has disappeared. The ineptitude of our pass defense (ranked 21st, 251.5 ypg) is exceeded only by our rushing defense (25th, 126 ypg). We didnít sack Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford one time while strong safety Jon McGraw (10) and free safety Kendrick Lewis (9) combined for 19 tackles.

When the safeties account for 19 tackles thatís a horror movie in the making.
Of course, players also have to make plays when given the chance.
McGraw had the opportunity for a pick-six early in the game, but instead turned six points into a stumble and fumble.

Itís been that kind of ďNightmare at Arrowhead.Ē At the end of the day, however, whether youíve been outscored in two games by 81 points or two points, 0-2 is still 0-2. Sunday is our playoff game. Itís our Super Bowl. If the Chiefs win, theyíre back in the AFC West title chase and, just maybe, they can still salvage their season. If they lose, and fall to 0-3, then the chances of recovery are about as good as expecting Freddy Krueger to save our life by performing a Heimlich maneuver. It ainít going to happen. Another loss on Sunday and things could get ugly . . . as in Jason-without-his-mask ugly.

I blame the face paint and the foam hat squeezing your head for your fandumb. This team sucks ass from the top to the bottom. Let me guess, you were part of the "it's only the preseason crowd."

At what point would you think that this team sucks? What does the record need to be in your eyes before you open up to the truth?

Admitting that they suck will only ease your burden of the heartache this team is going to give you.

"The NFL is all about opportunity. When the opportunity comes, who will emerge as the next great star?"

Excellent point. Who will take advantage of the opportunity? Hard for Stanzi and Langford to do it on the inactive list or for a running back to do it when we are playing from behind.

dude. being a homer has a time and place; the issue with homerism now is that it leads to complacency. by continuing to be happy with mediocrity, you're telling the chiefs organization that it's OK to continue to ignore the most important position on the field (QB). you're telling them that it's OK that we have shit for depth. you're essentially telling them that you're such a drunk dipshit that results mean absolutely NOTHING to you. fuck, just go ahead and become a cubs fan... same idea, really. great atmosphere, lots of booze, NOBODY GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THE RESULTS ON THE FIELD.

Sure - but who was thier QB? Who's ours? Who played on thier defense? Ours? Their Offense? Ours? How many of their key players were lost for the season? Ours? How much depth did they have? Us? Who was thier coach? ours?

Up to this point they have shown that they are worse in almost every category on offense and defense than the 85 team. Absolutely nothing gives any indication that will change. Other than you hoping they will make a complete turn around. Good luck with that.

Nobody can help you if you can't see that this team will be one of the worst ever for this franchise. Unprepared in game planning, conditioning and on the field cohesiveness. I'm tired of making excuses for these perennial losers. Same question I posed earlier. At what point in the season will you honestly say they just ****ing suck?

I loathe this line of thinking.

You know who does this? People who don't want to admit the truth.

Big freaking deal, we backed into the playoffs at 9-7 and got smoked.

It did nothing for the future of this team. Nothing. That's what this is about is the FUTURE. The future isn't going to be bright with some noodle armed QB we currently have. It's just not. You watch the games. You can't be this blind.

I'm loyal to the Chiefs. I'll watch every game. I'll be impressed when they do something well. However, winning today with this garbage team, only insures a cloudy future. They aren't going to win a SB this year. They are laughable bad.

When you are laughable bad, you need some LUCK to get to where you want to go.
