Ka'aihue dealt to A's for Minor League pitcher

Powerful first baseman lost playing opportunities with Royals
By Dick Kaegel / MLB.com | 09/27/11 4:23 PM ET

MINNEAPOLIS -- Slugger Kila Ka'aihue's tenure with the Royals is officially over.

Ka'aihue was traded to the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday for Minor League right-handed pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth.

Failing to make a favorable impression in 2010 and this year in his stays with Kansas City, Ka'aihue was blocked out of his potential positions by designated hitter Billy Butler and the arrival of first baseman Eric Hosmer. After spending most of the season with Triple-A Omaha, Ka'aihue was designated for assignment on Wednesday.

Hollingsworth, 24, was assigned to the Omaha roster. He spent most of this season with Double-A Midland and was 6-5 with a 3.61 ERA in 17 games, including 16 starts. He made two late-season starts for Triple-A Sacramento and was 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA. He also made one relief appearance in the Pacific Coast League playoffs.

From Joliet, Ill., Hollingsworth played at Western Michigan University and was drafted in the fourth round in 2008 by the Colorado Rockies. He was traded to the A's last January for pitcher Clayton Mortensen.

Ka'aihue, 27, shot to prominence in 2008 when he combined for 37 home runs and 100 RBIs with a .314 average for Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Omaha. He was called up by the Royals in September and hit his first Major League homer while batting .286 in 12 games. However, he couldn't make the big league club the next spring.

He spent all of 2009 with Omaha but dipped to 17 homers, 57 RBIs and a .252 average. In 2010, he started the season with Omaha, was called up by KC in May but struggled and was sent back to Triple-A. He returned on Aug. 1 and finished with 52 games played for the Royals; he had eight homers, 25 RBIs and a .217 average.

Ka'aihue began this season as the Royals' regular first baseman and never got untracked with a .195 average, two homers and six RBIs in 23 games. On May 6, Hosmer was called up to replace Ka'aihue.

In 95 games for Omaha, he hit .272 with 11 homers and 68 RBIs as the Storm Chasers won the PCL championship.

A good point only slightly made in the special is that if Moises Alou hadn't thrown a temper tantrum after the Bartman ball the crowd likely wouldn't have gone near as nuts. I understand a player thinks they have a play and a fan gets in the way and said player is upset but he kinda went overboard about it imo at least. Then of course the tv and radio people would stop showing it and talking about it... even though the pitcher was giving up 8 runs and the ss booted a sure double play ball. It's all Bartman's fault.
