Holy shit, the Blues have 100 points.

The West is deep though... all of these teams fighting for a playoff spot right now could do some damage in the postseason. The East seems kind of 'meh' outside of the top 5... maybe top 6, including the Devils.

Can't believe this team has 100 points, and already clinched a playoff spot. After 5 long seasons, the work into rebuilding this team has finally showed up. And the best has yet to come, Tarasenko in all likely hood is heading over to play and Rattie in a few seasons is going to be good, too.

I am amazed by how much potential the Blues have.

Schwartz gets his first NHL goal tonight and the Blues reach 100 points.

I hope McDondald is near 100% by the playoffs. The offense goes to another level with him in the lineup.

IMO, Sobotka, who I love as a player, should not be on the big line with Backes and Oshie. That line has taken a big step back with Vladdy playing in the middle of it.

Well if he was dumb enough to hit a Red Wing, he deserves to be suspended.

Brendan Shanahan has made it quite clear - you do not hit the Detroit Red Wings under any circumstances. And if you even consider hitting Lidstrom, you will be expelled from the league.

Die in a fire, Shanahan.

I'm hoping the Penguins take the division so there's a chance they meet the Flyers in the conference finals (and the SE winner will probably go out in the first round, which helps). But, if it happens in the first round, that's cool, too.

Avalanche win in OT, so they'll have 7th to themselves when the night is over.

Would have been nice if the Stars hadn't blown a 2 goal lead and given the Coyotes a point, but oh well.

As much as I hate 3-point games, the Avs have clearly figured out how to win in OT and the SO. I'm actually becoming somewhat optimistic that they might manage to squeak in after all, though they've got a tough road to get there still. Regardless, they're playing more consistent hockey than they have at any point in the last couple seasons, which is great to see. (Admittedly, it helps when your goalie's playing out of his mind.)

One mini rant, however: what the hell is going on with the Avs and penalties against this year? The refs call two ticky-tack penalties on the Avs, but inexplicably decide not to call a high stick by the Flames directly in front of a ref that BREAKS A GUY'S NOSE? I mean, when they have to pause the game to clean up all the blood, there's a CHANCE that perhaps a penalty should have been called. It doesn't make any sense at all.

The stat that got me is: the Avs have had six games this season where they haven't gotten a single power play. No other team in the NHL has more than three. And the total number of such games for the Avs in the previous 10 SEASONS: one. :shake:

Yeah, I'm encouraged by the OT goals lately, since they obviously won't have the benefit of the shootout if they make the playoffs. It's nice to know when they go to the shootout though, they're going to win. The only one they've lost recently was to the only team with 10+ SO wins.

I'm glad they finally managed to beat the freakin' Flames, too... and hopefully they can get things turned around against the Canucks, too, since they play two more times. They finished 14 games under .500 last year, and they're 10 over at the moment.

I hadn't noticed to the lack of PPs to that extent... I don't know how they missed the stick to the face last night though. He was hunched over a little, which they mentioned during the broadcast, but it's not like he was on his knees.

I'm still a little discouraged by being 2-3 games ahead of everyone, but the Pacific teams play each other quite a bit, so hopefully there are some regulation wins in there. The Avalanche play Phoenix, Calgary, and SJ (among others). San Jose plays Boston, Phoenix, Colorado, @Anaheim, @Phoenix, Dallas, @Dallas, @LA, and LA.

The Kings have been playing much better recently... interested to see how they do, because even though they aren't really built for the playoffs, Quick can win games on his own and they've been scoring a lot more lately.

I'd rather see them win the Pacific than Dallas, but I won't be sad if they lose to the Blues in regulation tonight...

Between Halak and Elliott, it's almost unfair how stacked the Blues are in net. Will be interesting to see if that translates to playoff success considering most of the younger Blues have a total playoff experience of four losses vs Vancouver.

Good read here from Bernie Miklasz of the Post Dispatch on why Alex Pietrangelo should get strong consideration for the Norris Trophy.

Petro doesn't have a chance, IMO because he doesn't play in a big market, and because of his age, as Miklasz mentioned. Even if he gets snubbed, it's going to be fun watching this kid get better over the next decade.

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/columns/bernie-miklasz/bernie-bytes-petro-for-the-norris-trophy/article_d4b00986-7817-11e1-aed9-0019bb30f31a.html

Is Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo a serious candidate for the Norris Trophy? I don't know the answer to that, because I don't know what the voters are thinking. But I do know this: Pietrangelo certainly is doing enough to be a strong candidate for the award, given to the NHL's best defenseman at the end of each season.

The list of other candidates figures to include Ottawa's Erik Karlsson, Boston's Zdeno Chara, Nashville's Shea Weber, Vancouver's AlexanderEdler. And maybe Nashville's Ryan Suter.

Let's look at a few reasons why "Petro," at minimum, should rate for a spot among the three finalists for the Norris:

1. The Blues are on the verge of allowing the fewest goals per game in an NHL season since the league expanded from the Original Six in 1967-68. The Blues' GA/game average of 1.81 is better than the previous standard-setter, the 2003-2004 New Jersey Devils, who allowed 2.0 goals per game. And Pietrangelo arguably fills more important roles than any other Blues defensemen. So if your team is permitting goals at an historically low rate, and you're the best overall D-man on the roster, then shouldn't that matter when the voters examine Norris contenders?

2. The Blues have a legit chance to finish No. 1 overall in the NHL or at least No. 1 in the Western Conference. It's a heck of a race, with the Blues two points ahead of the NY Rangers for the top spot overall. In the West, the Blues have a two-point lead over Vancouver in a closing sprint that will likely go down to the final hours of the regular season. The pressure has been on for weeks, with the Blues making a steady climb to the top of the conference standings.

Since Jan 3 the Blues are 28-6-4 for the NHL's best winning percentage (.737). Over those 38 games Pietrangelo has averaged nearly a point per game, with 7 goals and 30 assists. He's been an important figure in the Blues' rise. And we would make the case that it's always more impressive when a player delivers in a significant way when his team has so much at stake.

3. Pietrangelo's statistics are very good. They're not the best in the NHL among defensemen, but it's enough to keep him in the conversation. Pietrangelo is tied for 5th in goals among defensemen, with 12. He's tied for 6th in assists among defensemen, with 36. He's third in points among defensemen with 48, trailing only Karlsson (76 points) and Florida's Brian Campbell (49.) Since Jan 3, Petro has only two fewer points (37) than Karlsson (39) though the Blues have played two more games than Ottawa over that stretch.

Pietrangelo is also +17 in the plus-minus rating, which puts him 15th among defensemen. That number would probably be better if Petro had more of a chance to be on the ice at even strength. But he's too valuable as a penalty killer and has invested a lot of energy into helping the Blues goaltenders keep the puck out of the net when shorthanded. More on that, right now ...

4. Killing penalties separate Pietrangelo from the other top candidates: If the voters are paying attention, they'll give Pietrangelo extra credit for his versatility. He logs huge minutes on the power play, and the penalty kill. Look, you would expect the so-called offensive-minded defensemen to roll up ice time and points on the power play. That's what they do. It's one of the reasons why Karlsson has more points than any defensemen this season. He has 28 points on the power play, five more than Pietrangelo.

But what about killing penalties? Isn't this a vital part of a team's success? We would agree on that, correct? Well, this is where there Pietrangelo's case should receive a major boost, at least among the voters that take the time to do their homework.

Pietrangelo has logged more PK minutes than any of the other serious Norris contenders, and in some instances it isn't even close.

Pietrangelo has been on the ice for 239 minutes of PK this season, compared to 200 minutes for Chara, 162 minutes for Weber, 172 minutes for Suter. And what about Karlsson in Ottawa? He's killed penalties for a grand total of 40 minutes so far this season. That's right: 40 flipping minutes. Riddle me this: if a defensemen isn't considered good enough to kill penalties by his coach, then how the heck does he win the Norris?

The Blues rank 7th in the NHL in PK success rate (Ottawa is 16th), and Pietrangelo has been an important presence in an area of strength for the Blues. St. Louis has killed 66 of the last 68 power plays against them. That's remarkable.

5. What the Blues have, then, is the complete package: Pietrangelo does a superb job of killing penalties, he's a significant component on the power play, and he plays at a very high level at even strength. He gets loads of minutes, trusted completely by coach Ken Hitchcock. Pietrangelo is crucial to the success of the Hitchcock system; Petro's wonderful ability in skating or passing the puck out of the zone propels the offense. Pietrangelo is an imposing weapon in the Hitchcock Way: get the puck out of your own zone as quickly as possible to give your forwards a chance to swarm on the forecheck.

And Pietrangelo is only 22 years old.

Goodness.

Pietrangelo is already a terrific quarterback for this team; what's he going to be like at age 25?

So what would be the reason for excluding Pietrangelo from the short list of three Norris finalists?

No. 1, he's been a better player at home (+24) than he's been on the road (minus 7). That should be taken into account. But the Blues' home dominance has put them on top, and that should also be considered. Pietrangelo has been crazy good at Scottrade Center. But it's not as if Pietrangelo is a stiff on the road. He does so many things of value. The Blues are No. 8 in the NHL in killing penalties on the road and Petro has been a big part of that. After struggling on the road earlier this season the Blues have improved to 12th overall in the NHL in road winning percentage.

Oddly enough, Pietrangelo's youth may work against him in the process. I can't be certain of this, of course. But in all sports we've seen a rather shortsighted "His time will come" mentality among voters. That's why, for example, a young Yadier Molina was denied the Gold Glove as the NL's best defensive catcher in 2006. Instead, the managers/coaches that voted went with Houston's Brad Ausmus despite the fact that Ausmus threw out only 12 of 72 base-stealers in 2006.

The emerging Pietrangelo will probably win a Norris one day; he's only going to get better. It's scary, really. For now, some voters may inexplicably conclude that it isn't his time yet whatever that means. But if you want to make the case that Pietrangelo's time is now, the argument is there.

WTF does Hitchcock do?

Halak has a history of being a damn strong playoff goaltender. And it's not as though he's played poorly at all this year; he's been one of the top 5-8 goalies in the NHL this season.

But Elliot is freakin' locked in right now. Then again, he has a little bit of history as being an erratic goalie. In the playoffs, they can't afford to see him go splat.

I know it's a problem pretty much every single team in the NHL would love to have, but the Blues still need to figure out how they're going to deal with this and they need to do it soon.

I'd say Jaro over Elliot...but just barely. Jaro has the playoff experience. He beat the Caps and nearly beat the Flyers back in 2010, pretty much all by himself. If he falters...has a bad game or lets in a couple of soft goals...I'd be quick to yank him for Elliot. Nice problem for Hitch to have.

Based on the remaining schedules...I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that Vancouver will likely get the first seed in the West. As long as the Notes can hold off Detroit and secure the two seed, I'm ok with it. Having a record like that and having to settle for a four seed and a brutal opening round against the Preds would be a shitty reward for a dominant regular season.

Awesome to get Steen back. If we get McDonald back at 100% for the playoffs...look the f*** out Western Conference!!!!

A 4v5 match up vs a healthy Red Wings squad is going to be tough for the Preds. The Preds are now pretty much out of the Central title after last night. So it looks likely 4 or 5 for the Preds with the Red Wings taking the other. But a Preds/Blues 1st rounder would probably go 7, at least 6 but im thinking 7.

Yeah...I don't think Detroit's gonna catch the Blues so we'll likely get the Sharks, Avs, Kings or Phoenix...any of which I'd prefer over the Preds. Looking at the standings, it seems that the 6 seed will have a better first round matchup than the 5 seed. Chicago may catch the Preds and get the Wings in round one leaving the Preds to play the clearly weaker Pacific Division winner in the first round.

The West...specifically the Central...is absolutely freakin' loaded. Chicago is in fourth place and who wants to play them in the playoffs??? Especially if they get Toews back at 100%.

I think that win puts the nail in the Preds divisional coffin, so if nothing else the Blues lock up home ice in the first round. The Wings still present a credible threat, but the Blues get a crack at them at Scottrade as well. If the Blues win that one, it's done.

Ultimately I'd really prefer see you two beat the hell out of each other for 6 or 7 games before the Blues have to deal with them. We're just starting to get healthy and the last thing I want is a 7-game series with the Preds, who play the same kind of physical hockey all around the ice we do, or with the Redwings, who are allowed to hit people but are protected by the league from getting hit back.

On this we can all agree: Fuck the fucking Redwings.

How can there be any Eastern conference team more hated than Toronto? They're like combining the arrogance of Yankees fans with the sustained failure of Cubs fans. My question is will Shanahan lobby for Gary to strip Columbus of their franchise since they beat Detroit last night? Not only should players be penalized for hitting Red Wings, the teams should start facing sanctions if they beat Detroit.

I can already envision a key player being suspended for 1-2 games in the playoffs because of a "questionable" hit on Datsyuk or Lidstrom

The dream is alive (kind of).

That doesn't even account for tiebreakers, so there could even be more wiggle room. It's very fitting, in a season of last second goals and comebacks from 3-4 goal deficits.

The Coyotes and Kings have it relatively easy. I think there's a decent chance of the Stars tanking... it's a pretty brutal finish, and unless the Blues are in a spot to rest for the playoffs, I could see them ending the season with about 90-91 points. The Sharks are the big difference maker though, with 2 vs the Stars and 2 vs the Kings... and even though they have a history of folding under pressure more often than not, they could get hot or just split both series... and I'm sure there will be plenty of 3 point games in there, too.

So, I'm saying there's a chance...

Ugly shootout win for the Preds last night, but the backup goalie Lindback played awesome, so that was about the only real positive. The point for the dirty wild isn't going to hurt anyone in playoff contention. The ice was awful, they better fix that shit before the playoffs.

Shanahan finally suspended a Wing. Quincey throws a flying elbow into Kopecky and gets a game off.

Granted, Duncan Keith got 5 for something less egregious and Ian Cole got 3 for the same. But hey, Shanahan has finally punished a Wing for something. I honestly expected Kopecky to get tossed for smashing his face into Quincey's elbow.

Shanahan is beyond awful at this.

As much as I hate to feel sorry for Predators fans, they're absolutely fucked in the 1st round - especially if Detroit games continue to be officiated like that.

What a fucking embarrassment.

Perron gets cross-checked into the goal after the whistle, no call.

Steen shoves Bertuzzi after the whistle, 2 minutes.

Franzen gives Backes a butt-end to the mouth and draws blood at the end of the 2nd period, no call.

Stuart turns his back last second on Reaves, 5 minute major and a game misconduct.

No consistency whatsoever, but hey, gotta make sure the Wings get home-ice advantage. They didn't deserve 1 point, and somehow got 2.

Laughable.

Well, it was fun while it lasted.. and if the Sharks get a point tonight or Saturday, it wouldn't have mattered. The Preds are fighting for home ice, so Saturday won't be easy, either.... and if it means they'll get home ice over the Wings, I hope they get the 2 points.

Flyers vs Pens is going to happen in the first round (and Saturday)... should be fun.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nhl/story/_/id/7781833/san-jose-sharks-ryane-clowe-makes-unprecedented-bench-move

LOS ANGELES -- In a game that featured just about everything, Sharks forward Ryane Clowe made a move no one had seen before.

Clowe was on the bench with about two minutes remaining in a tied game Thursday night when he stuck out his stick and nicked the puck away from Kings forward Jarret Stoll, disrupting a potential 3-on-2.

Although nearly everyone inside Staples Center seemed to witness the move, none of the officials saw what happened, and the game ventured into overtime and then a shootout. The Sharks ultimately prevailed 6-5 to stay in the hunt for the Pacific Division title.

"He definitely got the puck," Stoll said. "Who knows what would happen on the play, but nobody's ever seen anything like that."

As he sat in his locker stall following the game, Clowe claimed ignorance.

"I have no idea what you guys are talking about," he said. "I'll have to see the video or something; you'll have to show me on video."

The Preds now only need one, so the Avs can still win as long as its in OT or SO. That sucks about the Avs I was hoping they could whip the damn BJs and get in the playoffs. It would have been nice to have alternating nights, Avs one night, Preds the other. That happened a few years ago, that was nice.

Outside of the Avalanche, the teams I wanted in are in... the Flames and Stars just didn't do it for me, and I'm glad the Wild faded a while back. Can't wait for the playoffs.

As long as that bastard craig liarplod had ownership in the wild I will despise them. Their dirty play makes that even stronger.

I really hope the Penguins can rediscover that they have a defense prior to next week. With Crosby back, they seem to have gotten away from what made them such a great team minus their superstars. In the playoffs, you don't see as many "5-3" shootouts compared to "2-1" slugfests. They don't keep saying "defense wins championships" for nothing.

I'm guessing we'd rather SJ win today, along with Phoenix, so we face the Sharks in Round 1.

LA and PHX both have goalies that can steal a series, and we've owned the Sharks this year to the tune of 11-3 in four games.

Yeah, no one wants to see Quick or Smith in the playoffs, and I'd think the Blues would be on the top of the list. SJ looks more like the soft & disappointing team of previous years and not the team that beat the Wings the past two years.

Speaking of which, the Wings could fall to 6th today and end up playing Smith or Quick. :thumb:
