First off, hells yeah. Hockey time.

2nd off, Hulsizer has reportedly agreed to a deal with Checketts to purchase the majority of the Blues.

We should have enough posters to do this thing. Or 3 mods who Avs fans will make sure of it. ;)

As much as I hate Crysby, its a sad thing for the NHL. They need all their stars.

They market the game terribly, only pushing the 5 major city teams. So many great stories and teams in hockey that should get more love. No games on ESPN doesn't help.

Anyway, they do need their stars. Its a tough situation. Bylsma is a good coach.

Looking forward to a lot of hockey, as I've missed out on most of the past few seasons. First season with NHLN, NESN, and some regional Fox stations... and hopefully the rebranding of Versus to NBC Sports helps ratings.

And it's not just an NHL thread... I'll also use this thread to talk to myself about college hockey. :D

Here's some NHL preview (http://espn.go.com/nhl/preview2011/story/_/id/7061058/stanley-cup-awards-predictions) stuff that we can laugh about in 9 months.

With no NBA I'm actually gonna be all NHL this Fall and winter with the exception of Sunday of course. Feels weird but looking forward to it.

The Preds had a horrible offseason, they will be pushing to get to the 7/8 slot and a first round playoff knockout. And that is only if some of their Youngins step up.

I'm guessing they start off slow with all the new faces and if you would have told me 10 years ago when I was sitting in a dorm room in Pittsburgh that Jager would be playing for the Flyers I would have looked at you like ya had a 2nd head.

Here's to Bryzgalov breaking the Flyer's goalie curse. :toast:

Cole may or may not need more time to be groomed in Peoria.

Jackman sucks dicks.

Polak is already a better D-man than him, Cole will be by the end of the year. Shattenkirk is one of the better offensive D-men in the conference and Petro is going to be all that EJ was supposed to be.

Halak is the difference between fighting for an 8 seed and being a legitimately dangerous team. If Halak can be 'good Jaro' more often than not and Perron can get back on the ice by December, the Blues can be a very dangerous team.

Yeah, they give up a lot of shots and aren't very good at helping in close... kind of reminds me of what Luongo was up against in Florida when he was seeing 35-40 shots every night and would still end up in the top 3-5 in save percentage. Granted, it's obviously way too early to really know anything.

No you are 100% correct on both parts, Im not too happy with Preds upper management right now, they had alot of momentum going into the offseason and now its looking pretty bad. They pretty much sat on their asses and did nothing in the offseason except let players go. Their top offensive pick up Nick Bergfors has been a healthy scratch 3/4 games. The Devils beat them up and down the ice on 5on5 pretty much the whole game. Except for Rinne but now I am concerned about them keeping him long term if this crap keeps up. Same for Suter and Weber.

Yeah I thought the Preds would carry some momentum into the season from last year. Since Bergfors came up in the Devils system I know him pretty well. He isn't bad, but he isn't big and he doesn't have elite hands. Could be 25 goal scorer but he was up and down here. He was part of the Kovalchuk deal, and I thought the Thrashers/Jets over-valued him.

As for Weber/Suter, I am not going to pretend I know the situation 1/20th the detail you do, but I kinda get the feeling you would keep Rinne/Weber and lose Suter. A lot of Devils fans actually are wet-dreaming about getting him. Then again, I am sure a bunch of NHL fans are wet-dreaming about getting Parise and that pisses me off so I don't want to do the same. Zach is my favorite Devil since Neiderymayer. Hard-nosed, American, Devils system guy.

I personally think Parise is staying, they have the money. I could see the Preds finding a way to lock them up in the same way up against a media that doubts its going to happen. Sure would be a great statement to the fan base. Outside of some great universe where my team got on of them, I would like to see the Preds find a way to keep them. I respect the Southern NHL teams that have found a way to connect to their fan base and grow it.

I respect the Canes for that as well, and man I hate to say it because I hate that team. For whatever reason we meet them in the playoffs all the time and they are easily our biggest non-division rival. Have asked Canes fans and gotten similiar feelings. Weird how things like that work out.

Here is a question I have always wondered and you may be the perfect guy to ask. How is it that both the Preds and Chiefs do the "we are going to beat the hell out of you, you you you."? Is that associated with the song somehow outside of "Chief fandom"? Am I just missing something obvious?

I am over fighting p much. Nice fight though, those dudes know what they were doing.

I hear you. I am all about a fight if its for the right reason. I.E. Sticking up for a star or getting even on a dirty hit.

If they get Rinne and either Suter or Weber, I won't bet totally happy but understand that you can't have it all. As long as they invest the leftover money wisely and don't sit on their asses. Of course I want all three, if the lose 2 or all 3 I will be extremely pissed.

As for the You, you you you chant, it is a bit of a controversy between Preds fans. One section, section 303 thinks they should control all the fan chants and such. They tried sayin "its true, its true, its what were gonna do" instead of the you. To many of us the longer chant was too wordy and sounded stupid. So alot of us started saying the You chant like at Aarowhead. It works but if you sit around 303 you hear a mixed chant of both because they are stubborn and think they are right and everyone else is wrong, so 303 and their puppet cohorts continue the long chant.

He's only been there for a week now but he loves it. Loves the coach and the city. Trotz seems to be pretty high on him too. Jump to 2:20 then again to 3:55 when he talks about him.

Overall they were pretty good, but man...they had some stretches in there where they just got caught in their own end forever. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt at the end of the road trip, but they've got to get that cleaned up.

Yeah, they were in the Leafs' end for what seemed like the first 8 minutes of the game, then it was turned on them in the 2nd half of the period with the PPs... and they were out-shot almost 3 to 1 in the 3rd period. Both goalies are off to great starts, and hopefully the D will keep improving.

And yes, winning 5 games after 1/31 last season definitely helps when it comes to not getting too excited.... otoh, I didn't watch any of it, so it's easy to forget about it. :)

I'm leaning towards caving in and getting NHL Center Ice... I guess if people spend $200+ for 4 months of Sunday Ticket and 16 Chiefs games, $170 isn't bad for 6 months of hockey and 75 (more) Avalanche games.

And I just sold another Chiefs ticket, which makes two at this point... and 2*$85... oh yeah. :D

With OnTheFly, and that comes with this big sports package I get for $6 a month, I don't bother with Center Ice but for all those A-V-S games, Center Ice makes it a little over $2.25 a game. Thats worth it to me plus everything else you get.

I caved. :)

I get NHLN and some Fox regional channels for like $8/month, so with those plus Versus, I already get quite a bit of NHL and college hockey. If I could just add Altitude, I'd be set. ~$30/month seems like a lot, since I already get a good amount of hockey, but like you said, breaking it down per game just for the Avalanche games seems worth it. I don't watch a lot of TV outside of sports, but I do like having stuff on while I'm working... and I'd rather watch Toronto/Winnipeg (the only game on last night, which ended in a shootout) than this week's crapfest MNF game.

This seems odd though...

In the United States, games broadcast by NBC or Versus are not included in the NHL Center Ice package. Additionally, NBC has been granted an exclusive window by the league, during which no other games can be televised in the United States. During this window, other games may be televised locally only by Canadian teams. For instance, if the Edmonton Oilers are playing the Nashville Predators at the same time NBC is televising another game, the Oilers may choose to broadcast the game locally (on Sportsnet West, for example), but the Predators are not permitted to televise the game. Additionally, the game would be available on NHL Center Ice in Canada, but not in the United States. The NBC blackout window typically lasts 2.5 hours from the start of its Game of the Week broadcast. Games televised by Versus are designated as exclusive or non-exclusive for blackout purposes. Exclusive broadcasts generally occur on Monday and Tuesday nights during the regular season. During these games, Versus has an exclusive window similar to NBC, which usually lasts 2 or 2.5 hours from the start of the Versus telecast. No other games may be televised in the United States during this time. Canadian teams may choose to air these games, and unlike the NBC exclusive window, the Canadian local telecasts are included in the U.S. NHL Center Ice package. During non-exclusive Versus telecasts, other teams may televise their games, but the Versus game may not be locally televised.

So, I could miss games I want to watch if Versus or NBC has an exclusive game? That's retarded. Sure, if the Blues play the Avalanche, I'll watch it on FSN Midwest instead of NHL Center Ice... whatever. But, not televising any other game during those exclusive broadcasts? :spock:

I'm going to look into a little more... the NBC thing doesn't bother me as much, since they only carry one game/week from Jan-March and it's usually a good game-of-the-week type game. I don't know how many 'exclusive' vs 'non-exclusive' games are on Versus though, and it's at least 2 times a week.

He's the Rex Grossman of NHL goalies.

Elliott, from what I understand, could be a decent starting option if he split time in goal with someone, meaning at best he'd be good for about 40 games a year.

The problem is figuring out when those 40 games are going to be.

Ottawa fans hated the guy. He'd be great for 2 or 3 games then just completely fall apart and be horrid for a couple weeks. Out of nowhere, he'd suddenly be decent again.

There's a reason the guy didn't get a nibble anywhere as a starter and took a damn cheap deal even for a backup.

Elliot isn't a long-term option, but he'll do for right now. Ride him til he bucks ya, but he's gonna buck ya.

I was reading an article (http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/11963/5-things-khabibulin%E2%80%99s-reemergence-and-the-visor-controversy) earlier, and number four on the list is "Johnson living up to his billing"...

...
The big righting of the scales on this deal has been in Colorado, where Johnson has been a key component of an Avs team that has surprised most observers by getting off to a 6-2 start. Johnson is leading all Avs with an average of 23:26 in ice time every night, playing mostly with veteran shutdown defender Jan Hejda. Johnson has five assists in eight games, and although he is minus-6, he seems more comfortable in his role as the Avsí go-to guy on the blue line, where he is called on in all key situations of the game.
...

He focuses on the Avalanche's record, saying it looked like a lopsided deal last year because the Avalanche sucked in the 2nd half of the season, but now everything is fine because the Avs are 6-2 and Johnson is on the ice a lot. Well, that and dismissing the -6 (now -7) shows he's just cherry-picking stats and hasn't been paying attention (at least not this season).

Johnson had a terrible turnover against the Blackhawks. Last night, he had a couple of bad passes to no one in particular early on, he whiffed on a puck in the crease before a Calgary player scored, and he got caught out of position on the Flames' PP goal. That's just the last two games.

One theme so far this season for the Avalanche has been scoring late goals when they need them the most... Landeskog tied the game against Columbus with less than a minute left, and they won in a shootout. They had a late goal against Montreal to tie it, and once again won in a shootout. Landeskog did the same thing against the Blackhawks, and they even had a late goal last night to make it interesting. Gee, I wonder why they find themselves behind so often?

Eh, it was fun to get down there, but the game was pretty frustrating. Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

I liked Vrbata when he was with the Avs long ago, and he always seems to have good games against the Avalanche... 12 goals in 15 games, or something like that.

I didn't realize they had 40 shots on goal... it seemed like Phoenix constantly had 8 guys defending the crease.

Yeah, Phoenix let in a ton of shots, but they really kept the QUALITY of those shots to a minimum all night long. No real odd-man rushes, solid PK, most of the shots coming from the boards, etc. I just hope that the "goal scorers" start...you know...scoring goals sometime soon. As thrilled as I am about O'Reilly and Landeskog, the third line should NOT be the goal scoring line in this league.

Yeah, the lack of fast break chances was surprising. Duchene had a nice goal the other night, but he's just not getting enough shots, and Stastny has disappeared. The game in Detroit next week might end 1-0 in a shootout if neither team can figure out how to score by then.

They have a nice long home stand coming up in a couple of weeks, against some of the hottest teams in the league.

I didn't think it was a goal, either, and the (Flyers) guys on TV were saying some guys make lateral moves and stuff that are close but allowed, and maybe the refs thought he kept his momentum towards the net and never completely stopped moving his feet (which I don't think is true).

Detroit has won two straight with a combined 10 goals after scoring a total of six in a six-game skid following a 5-0 start.

"It's hard to believe they struggled like that," said Colorado's Kyle Quincey, a former Red Wings defenseman, after losing to his former team 5-2. "They're too good of a team for that."

Uh...

David Jones had a chance to make it 4-3 with about 2 minutes left, but didn't have his stick on the ice and wasn't ready for the pass, which is completely understandable since he was only standing in the freakin' crease facing the guy with the puck... :cuss: Then, 10 seconds later, Franzen scored to make it 5-2. I watched the game and read the opinions on hfboards, and I'm kind of 50/50 on who to blame... I think it's crap that TB refuses to forecheck (especially a team that's not hurting for offensive talent) but it's not like teams have to forecheck. I thought it was funny the first time the Flyers mocked it, but it got old fast. The guys on Versus were already starting to bring up ways to stop it during the intermissions, but I don't think teams are going to run out and adopt that strategy against conservative teams.

If it wasn't for a PP towards the end of the 2nd, I probably would have given up on it, but they ended up with a late goal on a 5 on 3, then Hedjuk scored about 6 minutes into the 3rd when they clearly had some momentum going their way. Giguere made some huge saves, including one right at the end of regulation, and the Avs got a PP goal in OT. I still dislike Erik Johnson.

They have the pesky Flames on Saturday, then a tough couple of weeks coming up, so they needed this one.

Blues traded Nikitin for Kris Russell.

Russell has easily the most upside in that trade, IMO. Nikitin was just a warm body. He had moments where he played some nice hockey, but damn was he slow. He was a little physical last season, but I haven't seen it this year.

Russell can skate. He may be the best skater among LH defensemen in the league. THe problem is that...well he hasn't been much of a defenseman and his shot is only okay on its best days.

The blues got a more 'creative' defenseman out of the deal and clearly a better skater. They lost some size and physicality and Nikitin probably has a slightly better shot.

Very likely a garbage in/garbage out trade, but the Blues got the much higher ceiling player, IMO. If you can unlock Russell's talent and just figure out how to use him, you can have a legitimate top 4 defenseman. He has the drive, skills and hockey smarts to succeed, it just hasn't happened for him yet.

His story sounds much like Steen's prior to his arrival. I hope the results are similar.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Teams usually respond favorably to a coaching change, though these guys look completely different under Hitch.

If they are still playing with this effort and intensity at the end of the month, I'd say it's the coaching.

Well, besides the team only having 3 points this month... :sulk:

Unrelated, but I saw on the Jumbotron the Mavericks are coming to Nashville for a game agains Alabama-Huntsville. Hope I will be able to make that!

Yep... not sure why they picked Nashville, but they play on the 2nd and 3rd. I believe it's UAH's last season of DI hockey. UNO isn't off to a great start, but they're fast & aggressive... fun to watch.

Ed Belfour's son is a freshman at UNO... hasn't seen much action, since there are 3 other goalies fighting for ice time, but no one has really secured the starting job at this point.
