First, before we go any further, if you're coming here just to post about how stupid Apple is, how stupid people who use Apple products are, how in 5 years there will be more Android tablets sold than iPads, etc., then just save it. Start your own thread and bash away all you want.

OK, now, that said, iOS 5 was released today! Go get it if you don't already have it!

For those of you iPhone or iPad owners who have been living under a rock, here's a rundown of the features:

http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html

I've been running the betas for a while and the GM since it was released and love the new features. Looking forward to getting to use iMessage with family and friends.

Anyone download it yet? What do you think?

That will change quickly.

And how often have you actually rebooted your phone?

About once a week -- when respringing doesn't free up my desired amount of RAM and usually after I install a app (via installous).

Really? Odd... I can count on my penis the number of times I've had to reboot in the last 6 months...

See what happens when you go against the organic grain of CP. Bad things.

Does JB have any impact on your existing pics/music/apps/etc?

Does JB have any impact on your existing pics/music/apps/etc?

Well... it depends on the device and what firmware you're currently running. Many jailbreaks can be applied in a matter of minutes without any changes to the device at all. But if you want to upgrade your firmware from v.4 to v.5 or something like that, then yes, you'll have to backup all your data in iTunes before you do it, and restore the data afterward. Firmware upgrades are what requires backing up/restoring your pics/music/apps/etc.

But just the jailbreak itself doesn't change your phone any. It simply adds additional functionality. Just like your AppleTV.

So if I download iOS5 to my iPhone 4, does that effectively have all the "Siri" stuff, etc?

Everything but Siri, if I understand correctly.

No, unfortunately. :(

As of right now, Siri requires the new iPhone 4S. Siri is still considered "beta" though (an unusual move by Apple). Some have speculated they may just be releasing it to a small subset of users first, then may open it up to older devices down the road in order to manage the load better. I wouldn't hold your breath on that though...

Okay, so follow up question - if I download iOS5, and back up my phone 4 to iTunes, then buy a 4S and restore from that backup - will it work and still have Siri?

Yes. But if you're gonna buy a 4S shortly, then you don't really have to bother with downloading 5 on the old one. Just do a complete backup of your current phone in iTunes while still on OS 4. Then when you get your new iPhone 4S, plug it into iTunes and tell it to restore from the backup you just made. You can restore iOS4 info to a new iOS5 device.

Remember though... sync ≠ backup. Some people confuse the two. Do a full backup, not just a sync.

In iTunes, be sure to right click on your device in iTunes, and select Transfer purchases. This will ensure all of your stuff gets put into iTunes first.

Then right click on your device and select backup. That does a full backup of everything regardless of your sync settings.

Then when you plug in your new iPhone 4S, it will prompt you to setup as a new device or restore from backup. Select restore from backup, and select the backup you previously did.

Then.. have cake.

Over the air sync is handy, but slower than tethered.

iCloud looks like it's nice, but I have zero reason to use it until my iPhone arrives.

iOS5 Music app is SUPER fail on the iPad.

OS4 version was WAY better. It's fucking impossible to find songs. Can't save audiobook places.

Custom ringers for texts, e-mail, etc....FINALLY, goddamn a welcome sight.

iCloud looks promising, interested to tinker with it more.

Like everything about the update so far.

Article on the atrocious new music app:

Seriously Apple. FUCK THAT SHIT. Bring back the old app. It worked perfectly and didn't need to be changed.

Actually, Android stole that feature from an iOS jailbreak app that's been around forever. Well before Android. The jailbreaking community has been the source for many of the best features of recent versions of both iOS and Android.

They probably haven't been updated for iOS5 or are still a little buggy if they have been.
