Cameras catch Hawk flipping the bird

Posted by Mike Florio on October 16, 2011, 2:10 PM EDT
The Packers are clearly the No. 1 team in the NFL. Linebacker A.J. Hawk showed a different kind of No. 1 to TV cameras on Sunday.

Hawk was caught by FOX’s cameras flashing a middle finger after sacking Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee posted an image of it, and Wilde writes that the finger was directed to the Green Bay sideline.

It’s unclear why Hawk would be giving the bird to someone on his team. It’s fairly clear that Hawk will be hearing from the league office.

That post-game brouhaha between Lions coach Jim Schwartz and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has attracted the attention of many people.

It also has attracted the attention of the league office.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells PFT that the incident will be reviewed on Monday. A key issue, Aiello said, is whether and to what extent there was physical contact.

If so, that’s bad news for Schwartz, who appeared to bump Harbaugh at least once. Harbaugh also could be in hot water; one of the FOX camera angles seems to show Harbaugh giving Schwartz a push in the back after that exuberant handshake.

Discipline imposed, if any, would likely fall under the personal conduct policy, which prohibits among other things “[v]iolent or threatening behavior among employees, whether in or outside the workplace.”

Jim Schwartz's passion approaches lunacy

October, 16, 2011 Oct 16

By Kevin Seifert

http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2011/1016/nfl_u_harsh_gb1_576.jpg

DETROIT -- I've already referred to Detroit Lions (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/det/detroit-lions) coach Jim Schwartz as a "sideline madman" (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/32162/mnf-in-detroit-the-lions-ying-and-yang) this season. So what do we call him now following his stunning (over)reaction after Sunday's 25-19 loss (http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/32738/rapid-reaction-49ers-25-lions-19) to the San Francisco 49ers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/sf/san-francisco-49ers)?

You've probably seen the video by now. If not, you'll soon see jubilant 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh bounding to midfield for the traditional coaches' handshake. Harbaugh wound up and gave Schwartz an excited handshake, followed by a hard slap to the back with his left hand.

Schwartz immediately turned around with a perturbed look on his face, chased Harbaugh down and bumped his right shoulder into Harbaugh's left shoulder. Schwartz then chased Harbaugh about 40 yards downfield to the players' tunnel and made a number of attempts to charge into a quickly growing mass of players, coaches and staffers to get at Harbaugh. Order was eventually restored, but afterward Schwartz neither apologized nor backed off his reaction.

"I went to congratulate Coach Harbaugh and got shoved out of the way," Schwartz said. "And then I didn't expect an obscenity at that point, so it was a surprise to me at the end of the game."

Asked for further details, Schwartz said: "I'll just leave it right there. I'm sure it's on video."

I'm wondering whether Schwartz will feel the same way after seeing the video. "Shoved out of the way" is a bit of an exaggeration. The exchange looked as though one of the coaches was having a hard time accepting his team's first loss of the season.

Schwartz said "there's a protocol in this league," implying that Harbaugh violated some unwritten rule of postgame sportsmanship. It's rich, to say the least, that Schwartz would be offended after a season of his exuberant fist pumps, cursing at officials and taunting opposing players. Those instances were fun and representative of the Lions' newfound passion, but this one violated protocol? Hmmmm.

Harbaugh might have been exuberant, but nothing that I saw him do was unsportsmanlike. If he directed an obscenity to Schwartz, it wasn't clear on video. And even if he had, it wouldn't be beyond the realm of an NFL coach to maintain his composure in that situation rather than charge after his counterpart.

Take a look at the photograph accompanying this post. There is a difference between being passionate and acting like a lunatic. Let's just say Schwartz approached the latter.

For his part, Harbaugh took the blame for shaking Schwartz's hand too hard.

"That is totally on me," Harbaugh said. "I shook his hand too hard. I really went in, and it was a strong, kind of a slap-grab handshake."

But to be clear: No handshake and no obscenity could merit Schwartz’s reaction. Either there is more to this story or Schwartz needs to take a few (dozen) deep breaths next time.

If he had an issue with Harbaugh, he should have settled it on the phone Monday morning. To use a phrase I’ve heard him say a few times: Good grief.

Hold on a minute with the Harbaugh bashing. I watched the entire game (my brother in law is a Lions fan). Earlier in the game, Harbaugh teied to challenge an unchallengeable play and recieced a 15yd unsportsmanlike penalty. Schwartz was yelling at the 49ers sideline " yeah!!! Learn the f***in rules!!". Which my brother in law was bragging about. In my opinion, Harbaugh should have just jacked that cocky f***er in the mouth at the end of the game.

People lose their tempers or get emotional. It happens. I really dont think either coach did something that insane. Everyone acts a little over the top sometimes, especially in competition. I think its a little short-sighted to think these guys are any different. Hell, its their jobs, I would be doing crap like this by mistake once in a while too if I spent all offseason wondering if I would make it in this league and then seen some proof towards that.

I think we sometimes over-estimate what players need to get pumped up. Did you see the video of the Lions before this game? They were going out of their minds. Of course this will bring them closer together, but I think this loss in general would have.

I don't think this team plays much different in their next game than they would in the universe where this incident didn't happen.

I think he has gained enough respect in the locker room where the guys aren't going to stop listening to him or say "well you do it so why shouldn't I". The players get policed by other players on selfish penalties anyway.

Like I said above, I doubt this affects the team much either way.

I'm sure after the Vikings game he didn't cross the field to celebrate his victory with the other coach, push him along as though he had better things to get to, and say something obviously offensive, even if it was just "**** yeah". Not a huge deal on it's own, but still the antithesis of sportsmanship. Again, it wasn't that he patted him too hard, it was that he basically pushed him along as though the whole handshake was just a formality, which to a degree it is, but most coaches still take that formality seriously b/c they have respect for the man across the field.

Schwartz should have taken note, maybe called his pussy ass out in the presser and let his players know that the coach of the team who just beat them doesn't take them seriously. I see the 'dismissive shove' but to me it is more like a 'dismissive pat on the back that was a LITTLE too hard.'

In my mind it doesn't warrant the reaction that Schwartz gave...I agree about it being dismissive (to a small degree) but the reaction was 100x more blown out of proportion than the pat on the back (at least in my opinion).

It really comes down to containment.

For Harbaugh it should be knowing when to apply that type of behaviour.

There is a time and place for everything. You save the celebrations for the locker room with your teammates. Plain and simple.

It shouldn't be done right in front of the opposing coaches face especially after he lost the game when he is all pissed off. That a pretty douche, and classless move by Harbaugh. Now he probably wasn't consciously aware of it at the time?

Hopefully he can learn from this experience and change his ways. I side with Schwartz on this one and I don't blame him for getting mad. And I agree with what Cowher said on CBS, Harbaugh is a good young coach who just needs to learn how to handle success. Thats the key right there.

Schwartz, Harbaugh had awkward exchange in March
Posted by Mike Florio on October 17, 2011, 4:45 PM EDT

As we wait for the NFL to dispense discipline (or not) for Sunday’s pushy-shovy scuffle between 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Lions coach Jim Schwartz, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle points to an article from earlier this year regarding some dinner discussion between the two men, as told to the Philadelphia Inquirer by Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

“We were having dinner the other night and Jim Schwartz told [Jim Harbaugh] basically there’s no way you’re going to be able to get it done [if the lockout lasts into the summer],” John Harbaugh said. “[Schwartz] told him there’s no way you’re going to be able to accomplish what you need to accomplish in two weeks if this thing lasts a while. Jim [Harbaugh] just kind of bit his tongue, which is what you’ve got to do in this situation. Because there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Actually, there is something you can do about it. You can use it as extra motivation, and then when you beat the guy who said “there’s no way you’re going to be able to get it done,” you can get really fired up and give him an aggressive handshake, along with a shove in the back.

More importantly, Jim Harbaugh told reporters in March that, if the lockout greatly reduces his preparation time for his first NFL season, “I’ll find a way.”

And he sure as hell has.

WTF had Schwartz accomplished that allowed him to make that comment anyway?

Pete Carroll is famous for asking Harbaugh "What's your deal?". He wasn't saying good game, he was whining about Stanford running up the score.

Not what it sounds like to me. That may be what "people close" say was said, but not what I hear. To me, it sound like Carroll asks "How you feel, you alright" and Harbaugh replies "Yeah, I'm great" and as Carroll says "Good game" Harbaugh comes with "What's your deal?"

Anybody here watch the 49ers much? Are they actually good or have they just kinda lucked into their record? Alex Smith's statline for this particular game looked pretty Cassel-esque so I'm sure it's not that he suddenly flipped the switch.

Wut?

It's not like Harbough just now said this. He said it earlier in the year. So the tension was already there.

Good solid fundamental football...Good lines on Both sides of the ball..Outstanding D.

Lackluster (Chief-like) QB play much of the time.....I know a TON of Niner fans who feel that Smith needed to go a long time ago..(eerily similar feeling about him & Cassel imo)

I would say he is Cassel-esque...more or less.

I watch the niners almost every week, as my wife is a Niners Fan...

Patrick Willis is just a monster and Justin Smith is a bad ass....

I'm a little disappointed Gunther didn't deliver a foot to Harbaugh's gut and follow it up with a Stone Cold Stunner.

I am too.

Oh yeah, forgot about Willis and Smith. Nice that the team is finally playing up to Willis's level. Is Frank Gore doing well or is he injured? Seems like he's always injured.

Yah it seems like Gore is always banged up..It is a little hard to tell - he only had like 15 carries but BUSTED the **** out....

The niners also had some WR injuries....so they need to be careful to not become one dimensional..

They got a bye week, and then cleveland who I think they will beat easily (unlike the Fade)...and if Gore is healthy and they get some decent WR play I think they could win a playoff game this year......(even w medicority at QB)

The niners, at least their D is the real deal. That front seven could be one of the best today. NaVarro Bowman is Willis' student...but he often out plays him

It's funny because this is a physical football team kinda what I would imagine Singletary was trying to establish but failed to do so

I agree Jim went a crazy there but he doesn't care what others think. There was article I will try to find where Schwartz told Jim last spring at some dinner that with this lockout Jim will never get it done. So **** Schwartz he also yelled across the field at Jim to "learn the rules" (after Jim challenged an unchallenged able play LoLz)

What Jim has done is increbile and I hope they keep it up

They've had the talent to be a good team for awhile, but have been saddled with retards for coaches.

They probably aren't as good as their record will show (they still have 5 divisional games to go lolll), but I'd put them in contention for the #1 seed in the NFC if Gore can stay healthy.

I don't think the 49ers have allowed a rushing TD all year.

No fines......Really NFL?????

The postgame dust-up between Jim Schwartz and Jim Harbaugh after the San Francisco 49ers' 25-19 win over the Detroit Lions has been played up all day just about everywhere in NFL circles, but the league took the first step to putting it to bed today when NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said that neither coach would be fined for the incident.

"On Detroit-SF coach incident, fortunately, there was no fighting and thus no basis for a fine," Aiello said on Twitter today. "However, both coaches told [VP of Football Operations] Ray Anderson today that their post-game conduct was wrong and will not happen again. We believe their response is the correct one and that their post-game conduct going forward will be more appropriate."

Given 24 hours to reflect, Schwartz clearly sounded like a man who wished none of it had happened, and would very much like to move on. "It was unfortunate," he said in his Monday press conference. "The games are played by the players on the field and we certainly don't want things like that to occur, but there are competitive people in the League and I think we need to do a better job of just leaving it to the players on the field."

Schwartz said that he had spoken to people from the league, and that he and Harbaugh did get a brief moment to speak after the incident cleared up. "Well, I have had contact with a lot of people today, but afterwards in the tunnel, I got a brief chance to speak with (Harbaugh) sort of. Everything had died down a little bit. I am sure we will talk again or will talk again soon."

Schwartz then recounted his history with Harbaugh, which had always been positive before. "It was fine," he said. "I was a lowly quality control coach (in Baltimore). I mean I was the quality control guy on defense and he was the quarterback. I haven't exactly stayed in touch. When he coached with the Raiders, I talked to him. He was the quarterback coach and I think I was the defensive coordinator with the Titans. But, there is nothing and there is nothing now.

"It is something that happened at the end of the game and, like I said, it sort of took away from the fact that it was a tough, hard fought game and congratulations to them. They came on the road, very, very difficult place — our fans made it a difficult place to play again — and they came away with a win. We have talked before about how important road wins are, particularly NFC road wins."

[Related: Jim Harbaugh unapologetic after another run-in with coach]

Asked if he felt that he should apologize, Schwartz left that one alone. "It is a regrettable situation; particularly the fact that it detracted from what happened in the game … I will just revert back to what I said yesterday and just leave it there. I think it is what it is. It happened. It was very regrettable and it is something that there is nothing going forward between us personally or the two teams. Like I said, it was a tough, hard-fought game in Ford Field. We need to play better and come out with a win the next time."

Schwartz also tried to put to rest any speculation that Harbaugh was hot over something he may have said when Harbaugh drew a penalty for trying to challenge a scoring play that he wasn't allowed to challenge. Our own Chris Chase has speculated, and others have followed, that this may have been the root of the problem.

"I don't think he was watching on TV," Schwartz concluded. "You can't hear things across the field. You can't challenge a scoring play; I think we all know that."

Schwartz has bigger fish to fry; his Lions welcome the Atlanta Falcons to Ford Field this Sunday. With the Green Bay Packers at 6-0 and the 3-3 Chicago Bears suddenly looking stronger, the Lions are in a position where they've moved from America's Darlings to just another team locked in a breakneck division race.

"Well, that's life in the NFL," he concluded. "It's been a long time since we've been through that. This franchise went through a lot of lean years—lean being probably a pretty nice term right there. We've dealt with coming back from losses and things like that and we've dealt with long losing streaks and things like that, but it's been almost eleven months since we had to go into a locker room after a game and not be on the right side of the score. So there is something to that.

"We need to remember how it feels to lose; we don't need to be losing very often, but you know, maybe there is an edge you can get from that. We don't need any worries about talking about being 6-0, I mean obviously we're not, we're 5-1. We don't need to talk about anything other than the Atlanta Falcons and moving on to that game; have a good week of preparation and getting back on track."
