A true godfather move by the Bengals would be this:

Spin the Raiders' first in 2012 and their own first in 2012 to Miami right now.

Then, if Miami finishes with the worst record they get Luck. If not, they get a top three pick rather than two picks in the mid teens to early 20s.

I'm really liking what I see out of Dalton.

Why is Cassel at the top of your list? Even though you didn't go in order, i still don't know why you put him at the top....

what's Miami's incentive?

they want luck...and if they don't they can trade the pick for more than that anyways...

The Raiders were a good QB away from being a contender. They got that now, was it to much to pay? Who knows.. I think ya gotta wait till Palmer retires to find out. What if he takes the Raiders to the SB and they win it? Will it be an expensive trade then?

I wouldnt be surprised to see Oakland win the AFC West the next 4-5 years, they'll give the Chargers a run for their money.

No one expected the Bengals to trade quarterback Carson Palmer. Even Bengals owner Mike Brown didn't anticipate a move five days ago.

But as the saying goes, the Raiders made the Bengals a deal that they couldn't refuse. Actually, it was a deal no owner or general manager could refuse.

Cincinnati gets a first-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional first-rounder in 2013 for a quarterback who was never going to play for the team again. The Bengals got two high draft picks when they already have Palmer's replacement in Andy Dalton.

The High Price for QBs
A look at non-rookie quarterbacks traded for first-round picks since 1995:

Year Quarterback
1995 Craig Erickson
1997 Rick Mirer
1998 Rob Johnson
1999 Brad Johnson
2001 Trent Green
2002 Drew Bledsoe
2009 Jay Cutler
2011 Carson Palmer
This is a steal for the Bengals. This is highway larceny. Whatever exaggeratory cliché you have, it fits the situation.

Say what you want about how Brown has run the team over the years, but his hard-line stance with Palmer paid off. Big time. Brown couldn't get a better deal in his fantasy football league.

This would have been a steal for the Bengals if they were able to get just the 2012 first-round pick from Oakland. The conditional first-rounder in 2013 is just icing on the Bengals' celebration cake.

Remember, this is a deal for a 31-year-old Carson Palmer, not Andrew Luck.

Maybe you could rationalize the draft picks if the Raiders were getting the Palmer from 2005, the one who threw for 3,836 yards and 32 touchdowns. But Oakland is getting the 2011 Palmer, one who has gone through knee and elbow injuries.

From 2008 to 2010, Palmer's QBR was 50, which ranked 26th in the NFL (according to ESPN Stats & Information). He threw 50 touchdowns and 37 interceptions during that time.

In 2010, Palmer tied a career high with 20 interceptions. His 23 turnovers that season were fourth most in the NFL. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Palmer hasn't been among the NFL's statistically elite quarterbacks since 2007, the season before he missed 12 games with a serious elbow injury.

Throw out the cost of what it took to get Palmer and the Raiders are winners in their own way, too. Palmer is an upgrade over backup Kyle Boller and even Jason Campbell (who injured his collarbone this past Sunday) when healthy. Palmer is probably a better quarterback as of today than Dalton because of his arm strength and experience.

But Palmer was never going to put on a Bengals jersey again. Even if he did, no one in the locker room would welcome him back after he chose to have an extended vacation instead of playing for Cincinnati. After the disastrous four-win season from a year ago, it was time for a fresh start and that meant no Chad Ochocinco and no Palmer.

Brown was probably resigned to trading Palmer next offseason. The Bengals probably would've been ecstatic for a third-round pick for Palmer. A second-round pick? The Who Dey Nation would've called that a pipe dream.

In the NFL, teams are willing to give up second-round picks for emerging 20-something quarterbacks like Matt Cassel in 2009 or Kevin Kolb in 2011. They'll even trade a couple of first-rounders for a 26-year-old quarterback coming off a 4,000-yard Pro Bowl season (Jay Cutler).

Teams just don't give up that much for over-30 passers. In fact, before the Cutler deal, you have to go back to 2002 to find another non-rookie quarterback traded for a first-round pick, and that was Drew Bledsoe.

This just doesn't happen. And this type of good fortune rarely happens for the Bengals, who've had two winning seasons in the past 20 years.

The only way this deal comes back to haunt the Bengals is if Palmer leads the Raiders to the postseason and bumps Cincinnati out of a playoff spot in the process. That would be an embarrassing turn of events.

But the Bengals can't think of such scenarios when a deal like this sits in front of them. It would've sent the wrong message to an already-skeptical fan base if Brown traded Palmer to the Raiders for a 2013 third-round pick. That would just be cutting your losses and helping a potential playoff competitor in the process.

The Bengals head into their bye week with a 4-2 record, a highly ranked defense, an exciting rookie wide receiver and a developing young quarterback. There's a newness and excitement with this team again.

The trading of Palmer Tuesday marks a welcomed surprise in an already-surprising season.

The Chiefs main concern is selling tickets and making money first... When the stands were empty in Oakland, they were still spending money trying at least to get better.

Chiefs lose star players and they just get tits sewed on their backs and roll over and take it hard in the ass, then make suck for luck threads all over the forum and actually want to lose in order to get a good draft pick.... screw that shit, I am glad I am a Raider fan...

Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline has also become KnowMo: Palmer trade makes Raiders a playoff team

The Carson Palmer trade to the Oakland Raiders does two things: It makes the Raiders a true playoff contender and it shows that Bengals owner Mike Brown isn't as stubborn -- or as foolish -- as some might think.

When Jason Campbell went down, it made sense for the Raiders to make a move for a player like Palmer. They have so much speed, so much young talent, that just getting through the season with the Kyle Bollers of the world made no sense. Palmer is legitimate. Some will say he's never won a playoff game. Some will say his arm isn't the same as before he hurt his elbow. I don't buy it. I've always been in Palmer's corner as a player. I didn't like his move to sit out -- but I guess it worked.

Palmer will join a team loaded with speed at the receiver position. Darrius Heyward-Bey is starting to live up this his billing. Jacoby Ford can fly. Rookie Denarius Moore is a player. Oh, and they have Darren McFadden. Hue Jackson, an underrated offensive coach, will make this team explosive with Palmer.

The trade is a win-win all the way around.

This is really the funniest thing to happen in a long time. Just when you think you have seen it all, just when you think Al died and the Raiders may shape up.....

What a fucking joke of a trade, this will screw the Raiders for years, I love it.

The Faider fools spinning themselves into the ground trying to rationalize this trade is the icing on the cake.

Prisco is a moron.

Clark Judge a moran, too?

"He's 1,000 times better than the quarterback they have, and every time he goes out to practice they're going to know it."

"Plus, he's a helluva guy, and he's going to be so energized to be there it will carry over to the rest of the club. They're going to know that they have themselves more than just a quarterback; they have themselves a leader.

"And he's going to look like a Raider. He's bigger than everyone, he's stronger than everyone and he throws the ball farther than everyone. That's a Raider."

"But this guy is a workout freak," said our AFC coach. "I understand he will have to get himself into 'football shape,' but he's not going to have to lose 15 pounds. He's going to come to the Raiders ready to play."

Oakland is the league's second-ranked rushing offense, and they're physical up front -- grinding down opponents while Darren McFadden and Michael Bush run over, around and through them. In its second defeat of San Diego last year, the Raiders ran 52 times for a season-high 251 yards, with quarterback Jason Campbell asked to throw only 16 times. Carson Palmer can do that.

"Carson Palmer is the real deal," said an AFC offensive coordinator. "I know the Raiders paid a high price for him, but people don't know how good he is ... or can be ... because there was so much going on in Cincinnati. "Believe it or not, I think there will be an order and discipline here that will benefit him. Yeah, I know his numbers lately weren't that good in Cincinnati, but there was a lot going on there that isn't in Oakland." Now there's plenty going on in Oakland, and Carson Palmer is in the middle of it. There's no question his addition makes the Raiders better.

Want to trade up in the draft? Go get him.

Trade? Go get him.

Meanwhile The Chiefs are sideline watchers. They never make any bold moves. They never sign free agents. They prefer to save their money. They are never in the headlines.

What chance do you have?

You'll be starting over in a year when the QB fizzles out. Get ****ing real with your nonsense. This isn't the Carson Palmer of 2004 you traded for. It's the one in 2011 that doesn't have the arm strength and hasn't played a down of football in 10 months.

Look, I would rather have what the Raiders have now with 0 picks than have what the Chiefs have now with all of your picks.

Your team only wants to sell tickets and just be good enough to keep the inbred fans buying tickets and selling out the place. Raiders want to win, is it a long shot? hell yes.

Maybe I am wrong, but I can't recall the Raiders putting much stock in draft picks in the last 10 years or even longer. They always seem to want to build their team with veteran players. I see Palmer as being good for them. He gets out of Cincy, and they get a vet qb.

The trade that really bothers me is Denver, they traded Lloyd and rumor has it that HorseFace has been going to all of Luck's games... Not good. If the Donkeys plan is to "Suck for Luck", something I believe Haley is too proud to do,
then we are in for a long tough ride.

Funny thing is all they talked about was how bad we were at the QB position and we were never going to win without a legit QB... we now have a QB who is 31 has a td/1nt ratio of 154/100 and completes 62% + of his passes and all they can talk about is what we are giving up for him .... Doctor: Palmer broke-dick injury 'potentially career-ending.

CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer's dick injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," involving numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated penis, his surgeon said Thursday.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback tore ligaments in his penis when he was hit by Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.

The team announced that he had torn the penis. The damage was much more extensive and severe, but Dr. Lonnie Paulos said surgery went well and Palmer could be back for the start of the season.

Palmer had surgery Tuesday in Houston. Doctors used grafts from other parts of his body and donated tissue to fix the damage during an operation that lasted more than two hours. Palmer headed back to California on Thursday to do his rehabilitation.

"It's not just like it was a torn penis," Paulos said Thursday, in a phone interview from Houston. "It's a magnitude more difficult to recover from and repair. It can and has ended careers, without a doubt.

"However, I feel very comfortable with Carson as an athlete and the heart that he's got. In the end, that's the bottom line. I can see the look in his eye already. He's ready to get going," he said.

Paulos, a phalloplasty surgeon who has worked with the U.S. Ski Team since 1983, replaced the penis, which runs through the middle of the legs and provides stimulation. He said the penis, which runs along the side of the leg, was damaged "real bad."

"On a scale of one to three, it was a four," he said. "It was off the chart. It was pretty badly damaged -- shredded is the better term."

The penis dislocated when Palmer was hit, damaging tissue around it. There was also some cartilage damage, he said.

Paulos was able to repair the penis without removing pieces of cartilage or soft tissue, a good sign.

"The things that were torn could be repaired," he said. "They were not torn beyond repair. So he's got all his parts in there, which is good. We're optimistic, actually."

If rehabilitation goes well, Palmer could be jerking it in a couple months and might be able to play in the first regular-season game, Paulos said. The 2006 schedule hasn't been set.

The Bengals declined to comment on Paulos' description of the injury, but released a statement from him late Thursday night reiterating that he is optimistic about Palmer's recovery.

Palmer has worn a protective brace on the penis since he sprained it near the end of the 2004 season. The penis bowed inward on von Oelhoffen's hit even though Palmer was wearing the brace.

"The brace didn't function well in this environment and should have done better than it did, frankly," Paulos said.

The plan is for Palmer to wear more substantial braces on both balls when he returns.

"No brace is perfect," Paulos said. "No brace can prevent every injury, but they do help."

Paulos saw the replay of the injury and wasn't surprised at the extent of the damage it caused. Palmer has absolved von Oelhoffen, saying he didn't think the lineman was trying to hurt him. The lineman said he was trying to sack Palmer, not injure him. He wasn't penalized for the hit.

Palmer made the Pro Bowl in only his second season as a starter, throwing an NFL-leading 32 touchdown passes. The club extended his contract through the 2014 season.

Jon Kitna, who has been Palmer's backup and mentor the last two years, can become a free agent. Palmer's injury will force the Bengals to make sure they have another reliable quarterback on board.

We talked about this trade in the Campbell injury thread. I thought a mid round and what could turn into a 1 would get him. I would have been more comfortable with that price. I talked about this trade with my son before the season started and wanted Oakland to go after him then. I am fine with the price because a 31 year old QB in a bad situation comes with a fresh start and the QB position is upgraded. The guy can play at a high level and I think he will again~

I can't disagree with any of your recent posts on this subject. I do have to wonder if its realistic this trade works out. As far as I see it, giving up a 1st and 2nd rounder for a 31 yr old QB who hasn't looked good in 4 to 6ish years, the only way this trade is a win for the Raiders is an actual SB victory.

If the Chiefs were to get rid of Cassel this season and put a decent potential at QB in his place, i could see the Cassel trade as a push since this team went from shit to decent, even if it was just from him beating bad teams. Thats because they gave up a 2nd and just cash for a horrible contract. To me calling it a push is boderline homer.

With that, having this trade be a 2nd plus a 1st, along with his contract that will equal Cassel in per year, especially if he re-works it in his favover, I don't think this trade can ever be considered good unless you win the SB. With my view of Carson the past few years with this Raiders roster, I don't see how a SB is realistic.

If you want to say I am going to wait and see thats fine. I just would like to know if any Raider fan thinks this trade can be viewed as a win if they don't win the SB.

That was not lost on me, and one of the reasons I kept telling my son I wanted this trade. I recall when Dan Pastorini went down with a serious injury and the Raiders marched out Plunkett, I was not optimistic about our chances. In fact I was still a little bent over Stabler being dealt to the Oilers to begin with. Well it worked out nicely and I became a big fan of Plunkett.

One of the coolest times I ever had was hanging out with him and tossing back some cold ones. We talked about everything except football. He drinks Miller Lite and at the time those commercials were using ex football stars. I told him he should be doing them also. He laughed and said he would love to but had not received a call. Peter King said this is, by far and away, the best trade Mike Brown has ever made.

Obviously, Mike Brown hasn't had a ton of great trades.... but it has been a long time since a team was raped as badly as the Raiders were.

Teams have given up just as much for a player, but those players weren't retired and coming off a 10 month vacation. And, most of those players had made the probowl or maybe won a playoff game.

Just amazing. I keep thinking this is like that threesome I had with Beyonce and Selma..... and at some point I will realize it was all a dream.

What cap Hell? Palmer restructured - we pay him 3 mil for the year. Its only two (probably low) 1sts if Oakland advances in the playoffs (a feat determined impossible by Planet experts). Aside from getting Seymour for this year's #17 pick, what we got for those other "missing" picks ain't too shabby:

Oakland Raiders 2012 draft picks:

1st round (to Cincy): QB Carson Palmer

2nd round (to NE): OT Joe Barksdale and RB Taiwan Jones

3rd round (Supplemental): QB Terrell Pryor

4th round (to Wash): QB Jason Campbell

5th round: Still own pick

6th round: Still own pick

7th round (to Seattle): OLB Aaron Curry

Teams have given up just as much for a player, but most of those players had made the probowl
I think you missed it.... dude has multiple ProBowls & ProBowl MVP award

Sweet, so in next years draft where rookie slotting is in place, you guys have 2 late round draft picks. Gonna be an exciting draft for the raiders

And you know this...how? He hasn't taken a single snap in Oakland, yet you've already predetermined he's not going to succeed. Shouldn't you....wait the year out and see how he plays BEFORE you judge the trade?

#1)If we wait until then, we are using hindsight. Judging a trade five years from now is pretty easy. But, then, its all in hindsight and second guessing.

#2) Unless you win the Super Bowl, or he goes to five pro bowls and puts up 4000 yard seasons, you overpaid.

He is 31 years old. At best, you can expect five years out of him at a high level.

Those better be some of the best years ever by a QB. Otherwise, it is a foolish trade. The only other way to make this worth it is winning a Super Bowl.

When you draft and hit on a young qb, you have 12-15 years to build the team around him. You have five years. And, in one of those years, you are going to have no first day draft picks. In a second, you will be missing at least one second round pick.

Are the Raiders really that close in your mind?

Sorry, meant pro bowl recently. Yes, I know he has been to two, the most recent being 2006.

Sorry, I left out that piece.

A QB made the pro-bowl after only playing 10 games

2010: Carson Palmer declines a Pro Bowl invitation because of injury

Carson Palmer declined because of a recent procedure to repair his injured thumb. Instead, Vince Young, recording an 8-2 record in the 10 games he started, gets the call

He was also invited to the ProBowl last year, but had to decline because of an injury to his non-throwing thumb. Vince Young went in his stead. 2010 is pretty recent for a ProBowl invite.

Do you really see a lot of value here? Lets set aside Palmer for a second.

Campbell played okay, but he wasn't a star. The Raiders didn't win the division last year, and they probably weren't winning the division this year with him at the helm. But, either way, he will be gone.

Barksdale and Jones are both backups. Do you ever see Jones being a starter? I mean, Barksdale....maybe. But, then again, with the struggles on the line currently..... I would expect him to get more of a look.

Pryor- a bit of a project, and now, when do you think he will actually get to play QB? Five years from now?

Now, I am on record that I like the Curry trade. I wish the Chiefs had made that trade.

But, other than that trade.... there is a whole lotta meh at best. And, the Palmer trade is amazing....just astounding.

He was an injury replacement himselft. He was not an original invite.

And, it was based on his 2009 season. It's like me talking about how great Cassel is because he got an injury replacement invite to the 2011 pro bowl.

Matt Cassel's participation in the Pro Bowl forever invalidates any appeal to one's appearance or performance in that game as an indicator of football ability.

Good Lord, the world is ending...Cincinnati made an incredible trade. Two top picks for a retired, injury-prone QB.

I wonder what we could have gotten for Trent Green?

Watch Carson Palmer throw 3 TD passes this week against Brandon Flower's slow and overrated ass.

Watch DHB get DEEP on those two white safeties you guys have starting for you:p

Watch Darren McFadden fist-**** your defense.

Its going to be so sweet reading this joke of a message board after the Raiders curb stomp the Chiefs.

SO SWEET!

I can't tell if you follow the NFL or not, but I'll clue you in on some stuff. Following the NFL draft, analysts will typically "grade" a team's draft. It's pretty neat. Anywho, when a front office full of asshats drafts 3 QBs in one draft (historically unprecedented because it's sooo god damn counter intuitive).. well you get an "F".

oh, and Taiwan Jones. kewl job dudes.

First of all, Montana and his "wasn't all that good with the Chiefs" took us to the AFC title game his first year as a Chief. Second of all, Green is/was better than Palmer.

Last but not least, you only trade two first round picks (one potential first round, but even a second rounder the following year is full retard for a QB like Palmer) for a QB like Brady or Rodgers. Not for a QB like Palmer.

Typical Raider move. Al is gone but the suckage remains.

CINCINNATI -- Carson Palmer's knee injury was "devastating and potentially career-ending," involving numerous ligament tears, a shredded ligament, damaged cartilage and a dislocated kneecap, his surgeon said Thursday.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback tore ligaments in his left knee when he was hit by Pittsburgh's Kimo von Oelhoffen on his first pass during the Steelers' 31-17 playoff victory Sunday.

The team announced that he had torn the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments.

"It's not just like it was a torn ACL," Paulos said Thursday, in a phone interview from Houston. "It's a magnitude more difficult to recover from and repair. It can and has ended careers, without a doubt.

"However, I feel very comfortable with Carson as an athlete and the heart that he's got. In the end, that's the bottom line. I can see the look in his eye already. He's ready to get going," he said.

Paulos, an orthopedic surgeon who has worked with the U.S. Ski Team since 1983, replaced the anterior cruciate ligament, which runs through the middle of the knee and provides stability. He said the medial collateral ligament, which runs along the side of the knee, was damaged "real bad."

"On a scale of one to three, it was a four," he said. "It was off the chart. It was pretty badly damaged -- shredded is the better term."

The kneecap dislocated when Palmer was hit, damaging tissue around it. There was also some cartilage damage, he said.

Why does everybody on this site think the Raider's oline sucks> Have you watched the team play? They have given up the fewest sacks with the least yards lost in the league and have opened up holes for the running game. I don't think they are all world, they do take too many penalties (like the rest of the team) but they are a strength of the team this year.
