According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, it would require a "miracle turnaround" for Norv Turner to stay on as the Chargers' head coach in 2012.
"It will take a miracle turnaround for Norv Turner to be the coach beyond this year," said Acee on NFL Network's Around the League segment on Monday. The Chargers have dropped five straight games and are in last place in the AFC West. ESPN's Jerry Rice also blamed Turner for the Chargers' 2011 collapse on SportsCenter Monday. "Norv Turner is one of those coaches that just can’t you over the hump," Rice said. "I played under this guy." The Chargers appear

Norv leans on the running game when the running game is not working. He leans on the passing game when the passing game is not working. He's done this everywhere he's been.

I bet you that the improvement on offense was pretty good in every occasion.

He's a good OC, I remember he came here in 2001 as our OC and our Offense improved a lot. I know he went to Miami and they had a few playoff years with him as OC. Then he went to San Francisco and coached Alex Smith to his one good year before this year.

By Bill Williamson

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Chargers ownership is unsure whether it is going to fire coach Norv Turner and perhaps general manager A.J. Smith.

It has been considered almost a certainty that Turner and perhaps Smith would be fired when the Chargers entered December on a six-game losing streak. However, San Diego has been one of the hottest teams in the league this month as it has outscored three opponents, 109-38.

The newspaper reports owner Dean Spanos is now conflicted because he likes the fight Turner has put in the team and Spanos was impressed by the fan support he saw in the stadium Sunday in a big win over Baltimore.

The paper reports that if the Chargers can go to the final week of the season in contention it could go a long way toward saving Turner’s and perhaps Smith’s jobs. Ultimately, getting to the playoffs is what ownership wants to see, but it is interesting that it has been influenced by this hot streak.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Chargers coach Norv Turner is "all but certain" to be fired next week.
In interviews over the past several weeks, owner Dean Spanos "never once" denied that Turner's firing was forthcoming, and sources familiar with Spanos' thinking say the owner "feels he has no choice" but to relieve Turner of his duties. "There reaches a point of no return," said one source. Turner will be fired with the second best regular season win percentage (48-31, .608) in Chargers franchise history. He should quickly resurface as an offensive coordinator, and media speculation has the Jets as a potential suitor.

Yeah Kevin Acee is and idiot and pretty much anything he ever reports is wrong.

I fucking hate him.

There were reports that Phillip Rivers was lobbying hard for Norv to keep his job.

Source: Turner, A.J. could return to Bolts

There seems to be a lot of waffling on the future of San Diego coach Norv Turner, and, according to a source close to the organization, there's good reason. He believes that Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will be retained.

Of course, that's not set in concrete. Nothing is this time of year. But it's the first tangible sign that both will return next season.

Turner has two years left on his contract at $3 million per, and Smith has three years left at $2 million per season. According to the source, he believes that ownership is reluctant to fire each or both, then have to pay them.

But there's more to it than that. Quarterback Philip Rivers is a big fan of Turner and voiced his support Sunday for his embattled head coach. Owner Dean Spanos is reluctant to fire Turner, too, one reason he wants time to sit on the decision.

The public, of course, has made its displeasure with the Chargers known, but this year's team did not have the playmakers and talent people associate with the club. Injuries depleted the offensive line and wide receivers, tight end Antonio Gates played through a painful foot injury and the defense leaked too often.

Plus, there were too many turnovers, with Rivers committing a career-worst 20 interceptions.

Nevertheless, the Chargers won four of their last five starts to finish in a three-way tie for first in the AFC West -- with the club losing the tiebreaker to Denver. That the team fought down the stretch will count for something, but it's the second time in two seasons the Chargers missed the playoffs.

That will go into Spanos' thinking. But so will a business decision. That's one reason he begged off on making an immediate move, saying he needed a couple of days to think about it.

I think we should all get together and have a prayer that this intrepid soul is able to keep his job in San Diego.

Its a miracle. We must have some people in a state of grace here.

Signs improving for Norv Turner and A.J. Smith
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 2, 2012, 5:09 PM EST
A J Smith, Dean Spanos, Corey Liuget, Norv Turner AP

Chargers owner Dean Spanos said he needed a few days to think before making any decisions about coach Norv Turner and G.M. A.J. Smith.

That alone was a good sign for Turner. So was this quote from Spanos:

“It was really exciting,” Spanos said of Sunday’s win over the Raiders. “I’m really proud of them. I think it really shows how resilient they are, how hard they play for this coach.”

It sounds like there is a realistic chance for Turner and Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith to both stick around.

CBSSports.com’s Clark Judge has a ”source a source close to the Chargers organization” that believes Turner and general manager A.J. Smith will both be retained.

Considering Spanos’ remarks last night, that’s not exactly a shock. If Turner and Smith had no chance of both returning, they would already be fired.

Turner has two years left on his contract. Smith has three years left. Despite what most Chargers fan want, both men still have a chance to fulfill the rest of their deals.

Haven't they done that every year since he has been there? They lose enough games at the beginning of the season to put themselves in danger of missing the playoffs at then end. It's like waiting until an hour before class starts to get your homework done.

The GM A J Smith likes to have a coach that kisses his ass and he does not want to admit that he F***d Up hiring this guy.

Two openings in the AFC West it appears...

That was my thought. We are competing for the same type of coach in the same division.

Hopefully the GM will know what to do-whomever that may be.

Norv likes to take teams that already have winning records - then run them into the ground until he is dismissed - even he would reject taking this gig.

I used to wish the Chargers would demote him to OC, (knowing that could never happen).
After today's performance against the Cleveland Steamers I renounce any comments I may have made on this board promoting any coaching ability to be held by Mr. Norf. He has proven, time and time again, that he is incapable of getting the best out of his players and he is not able to get them to win despite their inefficiencies.
It has gotten to the point where he cannot even defeat the lowly 1-6 Browns.

Trust me, you do not want Norb as offensive coordinator. The game has totally passed him by. He's still calling seven-step drops and slow-developing plays despite the fact that we have no O-line and offenses have sped up.

Maybe Norv and Romeo could form a co-coaching tandem of outdated philosophies. It'd be da gretest.
