By Gary Washburn, Globe staff

After nearly five months and the cancelation of hundreds of games, the NBA and its players have reached agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement, according to reports out of New York. CBSsports.com was the first to report the breaking news.

The season is expected to start Dec. 25 and it is uncertain whether the league will pick up from its original schedule or add more games. The two sides agreed to talk again this week after the NBA Players Association disbanded and became a trade association. The NBPA filed two lawsuits against the league in the past two weeks.

Those lawsuits would have to be settled, and the league would have to carve time for free agency, training camp and a short preseason. When it appeared the season would be canceled, the two sides began talking informally this week and talks became serious Friday and lasted until 3 a.m. Saturday before reports surfaced that an agreement had been reached.

If the schedule does not change, the Celtics would open the season at Madison Square Garden in New York on Dec. 25. The Celtics' first home game would be Dec. 30 against the Detroit Pistons.

Yeah, watching all the kids that came out too early is really exciting. Sorry, I already have college basketball to watch. If the NBA would contract about 5 teams it would be beneficial to both college and NBA because kids wouldn't come out before they are ready to play in the NBA.

This again with the "Do you care?" thread.

Isn't it well established that very few around here care about the NBA? The rest are too tied up in KU Basketball to appreciate anything else basketball wise. I'm sure it's the same in other college towns. You can just put them in the do no get it crowd.

It's big everywhere else and I'm can't wait for the season... It's too long anyways.

I'm actually ready for it.

I've always been a "College basketball is sooooo much better, why would I even want to watch the NBA" guy but I'm changing my tune. NBA games are the best they've been in a decade. You have a ton of young stars; and the playoffs last year were the tits.

I really wish KC had a squad so I could get really invested; but I suppose I'll pull for the Thunder. They're probably the closest team to the KC area and I love me some Durant.

People who have watched the NBA recently know its a great product right now. If OKC didn't have a team I would probably be the same as most because I never would have given it a chance. I'm more psyched for the NBA than the NFL this year. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the Thunder having a chance and the Chiefs having NO chance at greatness. That and the fact I miss going to Bricktown for games. Can't wait to see the new schedule and for my season tickets to arrive.

I think it was. People here or Portland would crawl back because there is nothing else to do. Other places not so much. It was essential they get a deal done and play the season coming off a great playoffs last year. Basically, their shit does stink.

I wasn't an NBA guy until about 2 years ago, the guy I was rooming with during a summer was from OK and a huge Thunder fan. Basically, he convinced me to start going for them & once I saw it in-person, I was hooked. During the NFL strike, I defended the players and never understood why they get demonized and owners are revered.

Hopefully the NBA lockout finally sheds light on why I'm right. The owners said they'd be willing to lock out for 2 years, if need be. That tells you a lot about how badly the owners need money. These owners invest very little in operating expenses and rake in a shitload of profit, and yet try to pretend like they're bankrupt. If you can exist for 2 years without bringing in any money and not hemmoraghe money, you're making way too much money.

Yes, because we all know what people say during a contract dispute is what they would actually do when push comes to shove.

It doesn't matter. It didn't appear that there was any major urgency by owners to get a deal done and a ton of time has passed. 3 months is an eternity for a business. A year is impossible for any business.

Any businessowner who locks out revenue for several months would be bleeding money out the ears, let alone a year. Yet, in most cases, the fans side with the owners. It's astonishing to me. Sports owners have the cooshiest job in the world and continue to complain that they're going bankrupt.

Like I said before, if it dies I get more reruns of Cheers and WKRP. I'm voting for my own self-interest.

Nearly all sports are fun to play, but only a few are fun to watch. Basketball is not one of those sports. Has anybody here ever watched a game? Run, shoot, basket. Run, shoot, basket. Repeat 150 more times. Blah.

Want to make it fun? Raise the basket to 14 feet and put a hill under it. On the hill there's no such thing as a foul. And every player has a small shot put that they can throw at a ball in the air.

Actually, there are far more arrests in the NFL.

there are far more players in the nfl.

NFL: 60 (53+practice squad) x 32 teams=1920 players
NBA: 15 per roster x 30=450

hmmmm.... let's do the per capita (using 2010 arrests)

43 NFL player arrests in 2010 (http://backseatfan.com/2010/04/nfl-players-arrested-in-2010/)--fwiw, players not on nfl rosters and coaches were disregarded.

43/1920=0.0223958333333333

it's hard to find data for 2010 nba player arrests, fwiw. using proportions, it would take only ten arrests to equal the same percent of nfl arrests. that's not a whole lot, really. considering that this (http://www.pacersdigest.com/showthread.php?t=3964) states that 40% of nba players have police records.

so, say only 10% of those with police records were actually arrested in 2010 (a logical jump, but oh well). that would be 18/450; equaling 0.04%, not quite double the proportion of nfl players arrested.

Wow. No shit. Read back a little ways, and it's just attempts at smack talk by two people who aren't even Chiefs fans....about football....in a basketball thread.

Oh well. On to more interesting things.

Go back a little further and you'll see where Kurt melts down and uses the N word.

Temporarily.

That boy is so bipolar. He needs to learn to just step away when the downswing occurs.

NBA isn't for me but I can see the appeal. There are some amazing athletes and big time games. I think the season is about a billion times too long.

Yep. Love the NBA but the regular season is way toooooooooooooooo long.

It is, because the players get worn down. They go back to back road games, and travel all the time. Then they wonder why guys get used up by age 29. Or they wonder why goes sometimes look like they're loafing early in the season.
