Basically I'm trying to figure out how to get Rosetta Stone language teaching program for free(legitimately) by claiming it as a business expense.

Learning this new language would be extremely helpful with the line of work that I'm in, but not essential.

Is this very easy to do? Anyone familiar with how that process works?

What would getting it free have to do with income taxes?

For some reason I thought that you'd claim it as a deductible at the end of the year or something. I'm quite ignorant when it comes to this subject.

If you itemize you can claim it as an Educational Expense . Attached is info I gathered a couple of years ago when researching how to claim my MBA expenses.

If you pay for it, and it's a legit business expense, you can deduct what you paid from your annual earnings. (If you earned $30,000 and paid $100 for it, you would pay tax on $29,900 worth of income.) That's different than getting it for free. You just wouldn't pay income tax on the money you spent on the business expense.

you would think you could write it of as a tool.

It's important to understand that "writing it off" is not the same as getting it free.

I've just seen prices ranging up to like $500 for all levels. I know I can maybe find them used, just wanted to explore my options.

Yeah like Waaaaaaaay different...as in not even worth it if you don't itemize to begin with.

Don't feel too bad, even if you did the return on the investment isn't nearly what your looking for anyway. It would literally equate to be single digit dollars when its all said and done.

Even that must meet some criteria, and avoid others.

Can I write off alcohol if i am doing a food review? What if I do a review of the same beer, every night? Do you know how to get a free car but putting it on your tax? Free QB? I'll claim it, let me know please

The key is filling out your return in Crayon.

If you're buying it to help you with your business then it's a valid write-off. If you want it for free just download it and leave it out of your taxes entirely.

You could get it for really free, if you were into pirating ...

Or you could try this website that I HIGHLY recommend, which is actually free:

http://www.livemocha.com/

Think of it as rosetta stone meets an MMO experience.....It is interacting with other people.

I have studied and speak several languages, and LiveMocha is one of the best things I have ever come across for learning languages....Try it before you purchase rosetta stone, please.

The only way you get it for free is if you expense it and your company pays for it.

And you don't own the company.

The best way to get it for free is to order it and check the "bill me later" box.

In many cases, there's absolutely no reason to.

You may check with your boss and see if they can work out some sort of "educational advancement" type deal with you. If you can prove how it would be an asset for them, and you guarantee you will finish the program, they might be willing to work out a deal to pay for some of it.

Depends on how much you make and how many deductions you have.

If they don't have mortgage interest to consider then it is going to be pretty difficult to beat the standard deduction. I rent and can't claim anywhere near enough itemized deductions to beat the standard deduction. Even when I could deduct mortgage interest it was almost a push because I didn't buy as expensive of a house as most people at my income level. I'd rather spend less on my mortgage than get a bigger tax refund.

You guy are idiots about taxes around here, you need to spend a good deal of time and energy figuring out where and exactly how you can get every cent back, then invest that properly, it is no wonder there are so many broke people out there, they are too lazy to do basic research on taxes and HDMI cables. As far as Rosetta Stone is considered, how about the youth of America pull up their God damned pants and speak English correctly before they try to speak Mexico.
