Matt Cassel - QB - Chiefs

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel threw his support behind Matt Cassel at his introductory press conference Monday.
Crennel was also noncommittal on Kyle Orton's return, acknowledging Orton's free agent status and saying he "appreciated" Orton's late-season performance in 2011. "Matt Cassel has won here," said Crennel. "We've been to a playoff with Matt Cassel. I don't think Matt Cassel has fallen off the wagon overnight. I think he's a good talent, he's a good quarterback, and he's taken us to a playoff. I anticipate that he can do it again."

What did the Romeosexuals expect? Fat Scott wanted a puppet HC who would go with Cassel... Romeo fits that profile.

Jeff Fisher wanted to go to a team with a legit QB and probably laughed in Fat Scott's blubber-filled face at the idea of keeping Cassel.

Meh. I didn't think RAC came off as a Cassel supporter. The press were asking several questions about the QB situation, and someone asked if he could win with Cassel. That's when he said, somewhat indignantly, that we have won with Cassel.

To RAC's point, I don't think he's concerning himself with a QB that isn't under contract when the team has two that are.

But I didn't expect him to come out and shoot down Cassel from the get go. Hopefully that's what happens over the summer, but I didn't expect it to happen in his first press conference.

KCDC
01-09-2012, 03:36 PM
First press conference you say all of your players are good. He has to say Cassel is capable of leading the team to the playoffs. You show uncertainty about Orton until he signs a new agreement because you don't want his price to go up.

Heck, even though I would look to sack Cassel if I were the HC, I would have said the same thing at my first conference. It is what is expected. It is diplomatic. It portrays a positive image. So, don't read into it any more than that. This is especially true given that we do not draft high enough to get a decent QB, and there are no decent free agents unless the Colts cut Manning. So, we may be stuck with him until Stanzi is ready or we find another solution (e.g. Orton or another late round pick).

You left out the part where he said "If Orton were under contract I'd have a bigger situation here."

His whole point during the press conference was that Cassel and Stanzi are the QB's we have under contract right now. He never implied he wouldn't try to bring in more competition one way or another, and I don't think that him saying positive things about the only QB we have on the roster means he's being a Pioli puppet.

As I've said before, if he's given nobody but Cassel and Stanzi to compete then I'll be pretty pissed, but i don't think that'll be on Romeo. He's been indirect, but pretty obvious about the fact that he wasn't happy with the QB's on this team leaving his defense on the field so much.

Especially when he is the focal point of the guy that just gave you the job, that you REALLY wanted.

He needs some time to change things, but on this day, had to be politically correct to an extent.

You could tell he was a little frustrated with the questions, as he thought he was going to get some love.

I know that RC knows Cassel sucks, and I don't think for one minute, he is going to let Cassel cost him this job.

I think in and of itself these comments aren't that big of a deal. You don't get hired and then come in a rip a player your boss brought in. Even in the perfect world where Romeo and Pioli have agreed Matt isn't good enough Romeo is not going to come out and rip him.

The problem I have is that, like many, the fear of Cassel is so big that any positive comments about him make me want to cry. We are going to have to wait for moments like Free Agency and the Draft to know where this organization is going with the QB. Odds are Cassel will be our starter and that makes me sick. I do think, however, that Romeo is not the biggest Cassel fan. I just hope that helps in some way.

If you count watching a talented team suck for two years as a win. Or the assumption that the replacement of Pioli will actually find us a real QB in time to win with this roster. We can afford our current stars, but when our young guys become stars as well we won't be able to afford all of them together.

Based on what? This misleading thread? Have you actually listened to any of Romeo's press conferences since he took over? Did you actually watch the one today or are you just taking this quote and making your decision based on it alone?

Right now, Romeo has 2 QB's on this roster: Cassel and Stanzi. He didn't bash Cassel, but he didn't say he was the answer and the definite QB moving forward either.

He was asked a question where they implied that Cassel hasn't won games, and Romeo simply responded by saying yes he has, we went to a playoff with him.

He also made a comment about how if Orton was on the roster he'd probably a bigger situation to deal with, meaning there would definitely be a battle at the position and he would pick the best player, which we all know would be Orton. Orton's not on the roster, though. Cassel and Stanzi are. It wouldn't make any sense for a coach to immediately start publicly bashing his players.

It's my opinion that Romeo has been indirect, but pretty obvious about the fact that he wants some serious competition here for Cassel one way or another.

Bye be a big baby. There are other players on the team. There are ways to win with an average qb. Like the ravens did with Dilfer . Like the broncos are doing with Tebow. So go on be a stubborn ass.

Ok I will. How many games did you get to this year? How many years have you watched as KC was mired in mediocrity? How much money have you spent?

I just said I wasnt spending money, not that I wouldnt continue to be a fan. If you think Cassel is going to take us anywhere, try hanging yourself, at least then you will get the results you so expect.

No way a coach says anything bad about a player under contract, if only to keep his trade value alive. Romeo could've been jerking off Orton under the table and he STILL would've said nice things about Cassel. QBs are like women: no matter how bad yours is, unless you have a replacement waiting in the wings you do NOT talk bad about her, or else you're left whacking off on Saturday nights. This is much ado about nothing. Wait until training camp to see who the QBs are who take the practice field, THEN you all can panic.

What did you expect him to say in his introductory press conference? That Cassel sucks, and he is going to pursue another starter? He said what he had to say and hopefully he talks Pioli into pursuing another QB option.

That we'll be evaluating all positions.

My confidence in Romeo is at 0%.

I have no idea why these guys can't see what everyone else sees (and doesn't see) in this guy.

This.

Would of been nice too if they let Stanzi play the last freaking game of the season too. Then maybe I would have some confidence in Romeo or Pioli to move forward and hope for a draft pick QBotf in this draft too.

I would like to like Romeo, he seems like a great guy. Just don't think he is going make us a great team with Super Bowl aspirations on the horizon. In three or so years he may just retire from failed playoff attempts and ridicule of piss poor QB under the helm and Pioli will be on the hot seet at the same time so this is just moot hire until we get to move on from Pioli or he actually drafts us a damn QB that has what it takes to be elite.

Some how just have to passify the time.

Whatever the concern with Cassel, it wasn't like he was going to throw himself under a bus at his first press conference as a head coach of this franchise. It's clear that Hunt and Pioli are married to Cassel, but I wouldn't be surprised if Crennel got his way if Orton stayed or if Stanzi showed Cassel up. Who knows, I could also see Pioli leveraging and getting his way, as well.

If Cassel is in next year and plays as badly as he did this year it's clear who has the reigns (i.e. - it wasn't just Haley being a dinkle-dork). At any rate, Cassel won't get the shaft this early on. Best to let things play out and see where they go.

Let's break this down:

Matt Cassel - QB - Chiefs

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel threw his support behind Matt Cassel at his introductory press conference Monday.

Well kinda...

Crennel was also noncommittal on Kyle Orton's return, acknowledging Orton's free agent status and saying he "appreciated" Orton's late-season performance in 2011.

I'm sure he did appreciate Orton's performance. It helped win him a head coaching job and a ton of money.

"Matt Cassel has won here," said Crennel.

Well, he has, kind of. It wasn't really due to his outstanding play, but he has won here.

"We've been to a playoff with Matt Cassel.

This is true.

I don't think Matt Cassel has fallen off the wagon overnight.

This is true. Cassel didn't fall off the wagon overnight. He fell off the wagon in the middle of the day a long long time ago.

I think he's a good talent,

Now we are getting into some WTF territory.

he's a good quarterback,

He most certainly is not.

and he's taken us to a playoff.

I'd restate this as "He was on our team when we went to the playoffs."

I anticipate that he can do it again."

I'd restate this as "I anticipate that our defense and running game will be good enough to make the playoffs despite him."

I only see 2 out and out lies here. I'm sure he doesn't actually want Cassel, but WTF is he supposed to do? Unfortunately, it's up to Pioli. All RAC can do is evaluate Stanzi against Cassel and see how it goes (if Pioli even allows him to do that).

htismaqe

Yep, the only silver lining I got was he predicted Pioli would be gone in 2 years.

He just said basically what all of us are saying.

He's tired of the "Patriot Way". It's all BB and Brady and that's it.

He's also sick of the "tree" and he's pretty much convinced that the Chiefs won't hire the "best" people for anything.
