She is leaving her post to heal up. I think she should of done this a long time ago. Debbie wafflehouse Schultz made her stay so she could use her as a fundraiser myself. Get well soon gabby god be with you.

Yeah, I'm frankly suprised she didn't make this move soon after she regained conciousness.

I don't begrudge her waiting. She was probably going to be the Dem nominee for the open senate seat before she got shot. Its hard to go from there to having to end your career. The doctors had been saying early on, basically "well, its unlikely, but there's a small chance she could recover enough to be articulate", and they wanted to see if that longshot horse would come through in the final turn, but it didn't.

Her people says that in her head she's all there intellectually, its just her ability to speak that got destroyed, but fair or not, if she cant articulate herself well enough to prove that she's not mentally disabled, then she couldn't run. She wanted to wait until almost the last moment when filing deadlines are almost due to see if she could recover, which I'm fine with, but she couldn't.

If it is true, we dont know, but if it is true that in her mind she's 100% there but just cant communicate anymore, then it has to be incredibly infuriating for her.

I'd almost picture it like you are locked in a room and the guy who is supposed to pass messages from you in the locked room to the outside world can't transcribe worth a damn and constantly fails to pass your message on.

If that's really the case you can understand wanting to wait to see if some miracle breakthrough connection was made in her brain to let her talk.

I don't know if there isn't a way she could have made it work.

I mean, I'm not saying this isn't the right decision. It is absolutely fantastic that she's recovered this much, and that she's able to even make this decision on her own. But if she decided that she wanted to keep on serving, she could have made it work.

Given the history, a title edit might be in order.

Say, . . . Giffords leaving Congressional post.

Good point. Maybe I'm just way more selfish than her, but if I were in her shoes when I woke up, I'd be thinking I've got more important things to take care of.

Good on her for hanging in there.

I was thinking that. I saw the title and thought she had passed away.

Hawking's device is highly personalized only to him. I dont think they could build something like that for her overnight, and even if they could, and even if she wanted it given that she can talk and might improve over the years, it wouldn't work electorally. People would be suspicious that it wasn't really the machine translating her thoughts, but that it was really some vast weekend at bernie's type of conspiracy where someone else was making the machine talk. It has to be her voice. No one suspects Hawking because he talks about mind-blowing physics and didn't have a bullet go through his brain.

Also, according to the brain experts who know this sort of stuff, the bullet apparently hit the areas responsible for communication, not for thought.

A friend of mine recently sent me this in an email about an event he worked:

The absolute star of the night though was none other than Gabriele Giffords. What an amazing spirit this woman has. She was all smiles and gave each and every one of the staff working the party (4 people) hugs when introduced to us. She was escorted by Secrete Service and it was apparent that it was not because she was in danger, but rather because of what she represents now. I will say that this women is a Rock-Star in Democratic circles. Outside of Obama she will be the money maker for the foreseeable future for the Democratic Party.

She has a long ways to go health wise and will obviously never be the same. She would appear to someone who did not know who she was as someone who had suffered a massive stroke. She can walk on her own but not very far and has very little use of the right side of her body. All that being said She is right on top of everything that is going on in the room at all times.

LOL, still managed to maintain the subject/verb disagreement.

hah, it doesn't even work as something hilariously mis-interpreted as a demand addressed to Gabby, because you'd still need the comma after her name.

Hey Nut, I fixed your thread title man. It read as though you were telling her to GTFO and I know that wasn't what you meant.

While you were at it, her name is actually Giffords with an "s". :thumb:
