(NewsOK) — White House Press Secretary Jay Carney explained that the number of people dropping out of the work force, which artificially depresses the unemployment rate, can be regarded as an “economic positive.”

“A lot of that is due to younger people getting more of an education, which is an economic positive,” Carney said. He had been asked what would happen when people “inevitably” raise the unemployment rating with their return to the work force.

He also noted that “an aging population” going into retirement has contributed to the number of people dropping out of the work force.

Carney suggested that the focus on the number of people dropping out of the work force is politically motivated.

This actually means the unemployment rate rose higher.

Hold onto your seats when the European crisis rolls up on our shores thanks to global central banking.

Both sides are furiously spinning the numbers to suit their political ends, it's been going on since there were numbers.

How is it a spin to expect the NET number to be reported not the raw up numbers only?

I don't think anyone has said the up numbers were not good and a good sign. Its the lack of honesty demonstrated by the media and administration to ignore the huge number of people who have given up.

The Net number is going up too. Check ADP. That's the Spin, just pretend that the private payroll numbers aren't right there to see too.

In many of the past reports, the fall in the unemployment rate was due largely to people dropping out, but in January the labor force participation rate held constant and the employment-population ratio rose. A few bloggers got confused because the annual population adjustment took place at the same time as this report, but they were quickly debunked.

I will say also that the spin in the OP is idiotic.

So....aging boomers retiring from the work force, and younger workers seeking job retraining or higher ed opportunities to make themselves more marketable....ought to be lumped together with distraught and frustrated unemployed folks who have chosen to sit at home--when it suits your own political motives.
