The Pittsburgh Steelers, with a Hines Ward roster-bonus deadline fast approaching, have decided not to keep the veteran receiver, the NFL Network has reported, citing unnamed sources.

Ward, who lost his starting job in 2011, was scheduled to make $4 million in the last two years of his contract but has said he was willing to take a pay cut.

"I don't normally like to respond to rumors, but as I've said all along, I want to finish my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers," Ward posted.

...

Nothing but tons of respect for the guy. Sure fire first ballot HOF'er Fare thee well Mr. Ward... you were easily one of the best WR of my generation.

/bring him in for a look?

Ward has been a very good receiver, but there's no way he's a first ballot HoFer.

He'll probably get there eventually, but it will take a few tries.

Steelers have a lot of work to do this coming season to get under the cap.

I don't see black and gold in Bowe's future.

The guy is one of only 8 cats to EVER catch 1k passes in a career and has 2 SB rings to show for it. The guy was also a beast at blocking downfield.

It would be a shame for him to not make it 1st ballot.

Voters do love rings, but Ward has never been considered an elite receiver.

If he's elite with rings, first ballot.

Cris Carter>Hines Ward

Did you come up with this by yourself of did you need help finding out who was the 2nd best WR in the past 25 years?

Something is going to have to be done with the HoF voting then.

WRs are being left in the cold.

Get in line Hines...

-Tim Brown
-Andre Reed

When the subject of great receivers comes up, how many are named before Ward comes to mind, if he comes to mind at all?

Yea, looking at his career numbers hes pretty average overall. Heistwo biggest things working for him are the rings and longetivity.

heh, i cant wait to see how the Hall voters treat Terrell Owens when his time comes.

I think he's pointing out the obvious argument that if Carter didn't get in first ballot, then there's no way in hell that Ward deserves that.

Yeah, but a lot those yards & 1st downs came when Pitt really needed them. Dude has been clutch for so long & tough as nails to boot.

Yeah he's tough. Carter showed his toughness by battling with defensive backs that used to try and manhandle receivers

The few times I saw him play this year, he really looked like he had lost 2 or more steps. Not sure he has the legs anymore to compete

Moss and Owens were both better than Carter. Hell, I'd put Larry Fitzgerald above him.

From a pure talent standpoint, there was no one better than Moss, and no one, when motivated, impacted the game the same as he did.

However, that lack of motivation kept him from from ever achieving the greatness of Jerry Rice and the consistent excellence of Chris Carter.

It would be a shame for him to not make it 1st ballot.

The only receiver to ever make it in first ballot (in the modern era) was Jerry Rice. To put another wr into the hall on his first ballot would be saying he is roughly equivalent to Rice. There is no way that Hines Ward will get in on his first try.

Chris Carter was fucking awesome, nobody had hands like that and they still don't. He wasn't a freak athlete which has to be a requirement for most of you. In their prime, I'd take Carter over Moss on my team ANY day.

This is one of the things I really admire about the guy. He loves playing football. You can tell. I enjoy watching tough players pop up from a bone-jarring hit with a gigantic smile on their face. That's one of my favorite moments in football. He's not doing it to be an a-hole either. He's always smiling during games. I think the guy would play for free.
