View Full Version : Movies and TV Clash of the Sitcoms: Round 8. The Semifinals

Okay, we have six shows left. I will present those six, and you will vote for the top TWO. Only two. Then, in a twist, the top three will go into the championship.

(As background, I'm winnowing down from three to two to eliminate shows that may be a popular backup choice but aren't actually a favorite. We're going from picking three last round to picking two this round to picking one in the championship round.)

So anyway, I'm giving you six, and you will pick TWO. Two as in breasts.

Lots of strength here, though I'm still staggered by the absence of Taxi and Barney Miller and Malcolm in the Middle. My thoughts:

#1a and 1b - I can't make a decision between the two yet, so I'll just say Seinfeld and Cheers. Clear top two.

Didn't make the cut.

#3 - The Simpsons. I'll give it the nod for the bronze. Lots of clever.

#4 - WKRP. I'm impressed that it made it this far. CPers have good taste.

#5 - MASH. Good show. Brought quality to the table for years, and I was really sad when Colonel Blake died.

#6 - Married with Children. I can see why this show was so popular. It was simple but effective.

This is just a Seinfeld and Cheers Duel.

I don't see how a dual between Seinfeld and Cheers will even be close in peoples mind. Seinfeld scaled higher on the comedy peaks and didn't hit the valleys that Cheers did. There were multiple episodes if Cheers that were unwatchabe due to dominant focus of the unfunny insanity of either Diane or Rececca.

Three words: Woodrow Tiberius Boyd. Maybe four, since Huckleberry should be in there somewhere.

Really? I don't agree with that at all. I think that's what might give Cheers an edge in my mind. The show went on for 11 years and something like 275 episodes... which is a ton of episodes, and it never really lost steam. I think they had a couple clunkers in the last season or two, but those were mostly Norm or Carla episodes. I'm not sure there's another show in history that lasted that long and survived that many cast changes and never really lost anything. They probably could've kept going. We'll probably never see that again.

Too young for Cheers, Mash, WKRP. Never really understood the fascination with Married With Children, so my votes are for the other two.

I have been watching new Simpsons since I was six, and I am now 29. I literally grew up with that show.

In my mind, Cheers had some characters that were more strong than Seinfeld's characters, but also some characters that were more weak.

Seinfeld had four main characters who each could carry a lot of weight: Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine. They didn't have a lot of supporting characters, though. Newman is the only memorable one that comes to mind. They had a lot of one-episode characters, but they were more props than characters.

Cheers had some of the strongest television characters ever in Woody, Norm, and Cliff. Frasier and Sam were great as well, and Coach was pretty good. Their female characters were weak, though, with only Diane being a positive in my book. Any scene with Rebecca was weaker by her presence, and most scenes with Carla were weaker by her presence. They had some great minor characters too like Paul, Nick Tortelli, Nick's wife, etc. So Cheers was a bit more uneven, but the highs were higher.

It wasn't for very long periods of time... but they did it a couple times. There are some powerhouse lineups on that list. Nights where they'd have Cosby/Cheers/Seinfeld in the same night. Or Cosby/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court.

"Don't you get it? It's the phone cops!"

So back in the day of MaBell; you had to rent the phone jacked into your wall from the phone company. It was their property. These are several scenes from and episode involving terrorism and the smashing of a phone. A bomb threat on the radio station. By the end they all thing Johnny Fever and Venus Fly Trap are dead.

The more I watch it, the more I realize that it's a show about some exceptionally unlikable, narcissistic, self-indulgent, whiny NY assholes.

{snip}

Ultimately, beyond a bunch of 30 somethings chalked full of teenage angst, there's just nothing to the show.

Because there was nothing to the characters in Seinfeld. Had the plane actually crashed in the last episode, would you have cared?

I think the shows were essentially tied when it comes to 'raw comedy' - but tie goes to Cheers due to the fact that the characters actually had a little depth to them.

If you didn't hitch up a little at "Sorry, we're closed..." then you're just not human.

Cheers wins. It has no chance to win this poll, but there's just no doubt in my mind that it was the better show on balance.
