Not that I disagree, but how many teams play a "base" defense with only two corners on the field these days? Teams have more sub and nickle packages active now than ever before. If, and I do mean "IF", Carr stays here, this is a brilliant move. If he doesn't, we just got weaker on defense, and Pioli is a dumbass.

Unfortunately it does, even with the cap space we have it makes NO sense to pay 3 CBs over $7 million, when we have bigger needs for that money.

only POSSIBLE slim bright side is if they tag/trade him to move up to get a QBOTF, but won't fucking happen, so there is no bright side.

two ways to look at this.
1. Pioli is a brilliant GM that realizes this is a passing league, and three quality starters at CB is needed in todays NFL to compete with the likes of Tom Brady. Arenas becomes dime cb.

2. Pioli is a complete dumbass. He thinks everyone can be like the Patriots and win with no name CB's when in reality it is because they got lucky with finding Brady.

Scenario #2 is much more likely.

Signing Carr is MUCH MORE important now. Pioli has, essentially, painted himself into a corner with this signing with regards to Carr. Pioli gave up the leverage, because there is no way you can spin this into being a lateral move between Routt and Carr, since any blind idiot can see that Routt does not equal Carr.

Like I said, I'll give a standing ovation to this move, provided Carr plays alongside Routt, Flowers, Berry, Lewis, and Arenas.

We have signed next to no one in free agency in 3 years and what do we do? GIve 7 mill a year to a guy who's arrival likely means the departure of the best corner on this team.

I really thought it was a ploy to get Carr to lower his demands, I am LIVID about this. It makes no sense even in a passing league to have 3 Man Coverage corners making that much money.

We told you guys back in November that Carr wouldn't be back, this is the nail in that coffin. For anyone paying attention, it became obvious that Carr was gone back in November. That made signing a CB the top priority for KC.

Good point, this is a passing league and we could use another quality guy at corner. But is this really the top priority for us? Surely NT or our OL situation would have been one of the first FA moves if we were actually going to do anything there?

I do not see how Carr returns to this team, if this is indeed Pioli's attempt to lower the costs of his contract, then it is clear Carr will test the market and settle with the highest bidder.

But, hey, at least Berry should be back next year, right?

ct
02-20-2012, 12:44 PM
Hoping this is a shrewd depth signing, which will only be true if Clark has made a decision to spend big $ this offseason. But I just want to point out, if Carr signs elsewhere as UFA, we are likely in line for I'd guess at a 4th round comp pick. I'm thinkin probably not a 3rd since they tend to balance UFA losses vs. gains, and Routt will even things out some.

This isn't what I want, don't get me wrong, and it's not at all fair value as far as tag/trade goes, but just pointing out we will get something back.

They've got the space to sign Bowe, Carr, Solail (or however he spells it), and a tackle, still.

And you're right, Bad Guy, but I'm with Detoxing here. It IS a ton of money to have in your backfield, but how the hell else are teams going to compete with these passing offenses these days? How many QB's threw for over 5,000, and how many were 4,000 or better this year?

Perhaps the paradigm has shifted in the NFL. It's not about just stopping the run anymore.

Did he watch any of our games last season? We were in man coverage a fucking lot. Why? Because we have two of the best corners in the fucking league, that's why!

Routt isn't completely terrible; he's pretty good at press man coverage. With our new pass rush that could be a great combination. Plus he's similar to Carr in size, just an inch taller which is good. We'll need to have at least one good corner that's above 6 feet... With more than $52 million of contracts tied up in CBs Brandon Flowers and Stanford Routt, expect KC to let Brandon Carr walk

Carr is going to be worth the 2-3 million more per year that they are paying Routt, which could mean Carr wants 10+ per year.... I'd still pay him.

Having 4 good corners (inclluding Javi) is a luxury that shouldnt be afforded when that extra $3 mm will probably go to some jackass that won't ever play.

We lost all leverage to trade Carr now as KC would be on the hook to pay over 24MM to 3 Corner backs assuming he is tagged at 10mm. BULLSHIT. Goddamn it Scott

I'll forgive Pioli only if he gets something for Carr.

If we get something *worthwhile for Carr. If we get some high-round compensatory pick I'll be furious. Carr is 25. He just started coming on these past two seasons; and with his chemistry with the rest of our secondary, you'd have to believe his best football was ahead of him. I'd be willing to count on 5 more years of high level play from Carr if he stayed here. I'm not willing to trade that for some 4th round scrub that won't even be on the team in 2 years.

Now if we get a 2nd round pick or something and finnagle that into a trade up scenario (then snatch the QBOTF, of course), I could live with this.

MAYBE (doubtful) we are AHEAD of the curve this time... I honestly think that the way the game has been played(officiated) the last few years that it makes perfect sense to invest this much in a secondary.

Even if we assume that isn't the case... if we get solid compensation for Carr then I have zero problem with this,

I just don't see this. Neither Carr nor Routt really fit the NCB spot in the size and skill set areas like Arenas does. Not to mention, as someone said earlier, Javier is the best NCB we've had in a long time.

Now if you're right, and we keep Flowers and Carr at #1 & 2, throw Routt in the NCB spot most of the time, drop Arenas down to DCB and give him full responsibility of KR/PR AND throw in a sizeable amount of wildcat packages (and this all somehow works out)......... Pioli will be a genius.

I think Carr probably wanted to reach FA, and the Chiefs didn't want to out bid teams for him. I agree that, while Carr is better than Routt, you don't want to overpay at that position (See Philly), which is what you'd be doing in a bidding war, and have so much invested in your secondary.

If Carr kind of forced this, I think it's a good decision.

If Carr is also signed there will be plenty of crow to go around.
I'll admit this doesn't exactly instill much confidence that Carr is re-signed, but I'm not ready to jump off a bridge for a couple reasons:

1. He may be set on leaving.

2. The Chiefs may tag and trade him.

3. He may still be re-signed.

Gonna take the "wait and see" approach.

Free agency hasn't started yet.

Seriously, everyone needs to take a deep breath and settle down on this one. Let's all stop pretending that Brandon Carr is Darrell Revis. He's not. He's a very good cornerback, but he's our #2 cornerback. We have Flowers, and losing Carr doesn't leave us completely barren in the secondary. Stanford Routt proved that he is a very good complementary guy when he was with Nnamdi.

If we re-sign Carr, then I'm all for it. It's a passing league and our secondary is atrocious when we have to go too deep into the bench.

If we don't re-sign Carr, then I'm 100% fine with that as well. Clearly he wants top money. Or am I the only one who saw him rubbing his fingers together to signify "pay me" after every play he made this year? I wouldn't be shocked if Carr just had a contract year and played accordingly.

I'm not saying he isn't good, but it's not like teams couldn't pass against us.

I'd be much, much, much happier with letting Carr walk and getting another pass rusher. Haven't we all reached the point where we realize that rushing the QB is the easiest way to get your secondary to the Pro Bowl?

At the 2005 NFL Scouting Combine, Routt ran the fastest 40 yard dash at a time of 4.27 seconds, breaking the combine record of Deion Sanders. His record was broken by running back Chris Johnson with a time of 4.24 seconds in 2008.[4]

He had the second-lowest "burn rate" of all cornerbacks in 2010, with only 39.4% of passes completed that were thrown to receivers he covered.[5

40 time definitely explains why Al Davis drafted him

Dude it's not happening. We're going to get zero compensation for Brandon Carr he's not going to be a Chief.

If he signs elsewhere, we would automatically get a compensatory pick. If we tag and trade, I'd expect our compensation to be one round higher.

From walterfootball.com's free agent cornerback rankings:

2. Brandon Carr, CB, Chiefs. Age: 26.
Brandon Carr allowed a completion percentage of 49.4 in 2011. He is a No. 1-caliber cornerback who will be rewarded with a big contract this offseason.

9. Stanford Routt, CB, Raiders. Age: 29.
Signed with Chiefs (3 years, $19.6 million; $4 million signing bonus)

One of the most overrated players in the NFL, Stanford Routt is often discussed as a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback, but he definitely shouldn't be. Routt has good coverage skills, but is often penalized. He was whistled for 17 infractions in 2011 alone (it easily could have been a lot more), which led all players at his position.

this bums me out, as Carr was one of my favorites. I don't think there's any way they re-sign him now.

However, IF Pioli spends the cap money on a NT and a RT and re-signs Bowe, etc. and we get to the end of FA with signifigant holes filled, I could see why he might make this call.

It's really about whether you can pay two CB's in the 'elite' category. If you've got one elite corner in Flowers, and one solid one in Routt, that's not all bad as long as you're filling holes in the front seven, most notably NT.

And we need a RT. Badly.

Sign and trade Carr? I don't know what you'd get, really. a 3rd maybe? I just don't see a #1 or #2.

I hope they tag carr, i just don't see them letting bowe walk. Maybe something good could happen, not counting on it though

This signing allows them to put the tag on Bowe and still have the CB position covered.

Not too worried about the penalties. Who doesn't get penalties in Oakland? Their coaching staffs are terrible and they recycle every year.

when is the last time any player was tagged and traded? need to get over that one I think. he's either gonna get paid here as part of a very expensive secondary, or he'll get huge $ somewhere else and we'll be left with a comp pick next year, and flowers could be very lonely next season.

Carr may not want to play here anymore.

It doesn't matter because Goodell forced Oakland to forfeit the entire 2012 regular season due to the stupidity of giving up your entire draft for a brokedick QB.

The point is we could sign Carr, Bowe, and still have enough to sign Soilai.

At the risk of getting blasted, I'm with you. We are coming into free agency with 2 top-quality starters and 1 tag to use. One of them is HIGHLY likely to leave. So, what do you do? With 1 signing, you've solved both 'ifs'. We'll tag Bowe now, and it's a lot tougher to find a #1 WR than a #2 CB. Agree?

So, Routt isn't quite as good as Carr. Granted, and we all love Carr. Small school guy on his way up. But, dude wants to get paid now. I saw some post last week that Carr wants 14 mil per year! No way we can tie up that kind of money. Routt isn't Carr, but he's similar...large CB, good in man-to-man, a solid #2 complimentary guy to the #1. If Carr gets his #1 money to be a #1 then he might have a 2012 similar to Routt's 2011.

Basically, for 5-7 Mil per year less we have a 'similar' player, and we maintain control over probably the best WR KC's had since Otis Taylor. Good move.

Now, we need to tag Bowe. And, when free agency starts, fix the O-line and NT positions with the best available, guard from New Orleans, and Soili or whatever. Great NT and that make Routt even better. (not better than Carr, but a good 'similar' player).

Finally, get Peyton in here for 3 years or so and we're in the playoffs for years to come.

Routt is not a bad signing.

Maybe this signing implicates that they could possibly be trying to savour as much cap room as possible to sign other FA's?

What I was saying. You know the Chiefs have been in contact with Carr and his agent. This move tells me Carr was determined to test FA. He's going to the highest bidder, and it's going to be more than he's worth.

That's what the FO floated out there last week. Love how Pisoli uses the media when in negotiations. First demonize the player(wanting too much money), float out cap figures that are about half of what the national media comes up with and then release the amount the new player is signed for to show us that he's willing to pay big bucks. No wonder the one reporter last year when Haley was being fired complained about being used by Pisoli

This was NOT what I was wanting.

-That said-

I don't think the talent drop-off is going to be as drastic as everyone is making it out to be...could have been worse in that we allow Carr to walk and throw Jalil Brown in there and wish him good luck.

Everyone wants all these FA signings and this signings just makes those 'other' signings more realistic...who knows what Carr is asking $$$.

-Again-

I would rather have signed Carr than to try to find the silver-lining with not signing him.

But I don't think this is going to be the end-all as others are making this sound.
