NFL moves 2012 season-opening game to Wednesday to avoid conflict with President Obama speech

NEW YORK ó Powerful as the NFL is, itís making way for President Barack Obama.

Opting to play a game on a Wednesday for the first time in more than 60 years, the NFL will open the regular season on Sept. 5, to avoid conflicting with Obamaís speech at the Democratic National Convention the next night.

The Super Bowl champion New York Giants will host the Wednesday night season-opener starting at 8:30 p.m. EST; their opponent hasnít been announced yet.

According to the league, it hasnít played a game on a Wednesday since Sept. 22, 1948, when the Rams faced the Lions.

The NFL regular season has started on a Thursday since 2002.

This yearís change was announced by the league on Tuesday.

The NFL has no problem creating conflict(at least in my home) with adding a 3rd Thanksgiving game and playing games on Christmas but don't dare offend the president.

Though I think it is beyond stupid to move a game based on the Democratic National Convention, I agree. Early football can only be a good thing.,

Yes, I'm sure a lot of people have had their plans ruined because a game between two teams that haven't even been determined yet got moved up one day seven months from now.

You're complaining about having to adjust a hypothetical set of plans in order to account for a game being played one day earlier seven months from now. Why don't you take a step back and get some ****ing perspective about the world?

Were you as equally vocal and distraught about the NFL moving up the start of the game in '08 to accommodate the Republican Convention?

What's the problem?

The problem is it gives us one less alternative to watch that night if one chooses not to hear him pat himself on the back for all he thinks he has accomplished. Second, Goodell has fed his narcistic nature big time by moving the opener for him.

Right now there will still be college FB and the US Open Tennis qtrs that night but they still have 6+ months too move those off that night too.

I'm sure a few are. For most, it is the fact that they don't trust Americans to be able to choose what they want to watch more. Bet ya football would have kicked O's ass which is not what they want Americans watching that night.

Has nothing to do with not trusting Americans and everything to do with it being mutually beneficial for both to not unnecessarily eat into each other's ratings.

He's pretty sure he got Osama, rescued the economy from utter collapse, passed universal healthcare, ended the war in Iraq, oh and will have by then "two million jobs will be created during 2012, an increase from 1.8 million in 2011." (source: Reuters).

God knows I'll be watching his touchdown dance in November. Deal with it, your only hope is Jeb Bush in 2016.

The people getting upset are the usual morons, but I'll be honest, not sure a convention speech is worth moving the game for. Maybe something like a State if the Union address, or the election itself, but a specifically partisan speech kinda seems like not the same thing.

Anyway, football a day early, so who cares?

Meh. I still would only see 3 games per week. The Sunday afternoon games and the SNF game.

Really, it cracks me up how the NFL deems the new Thursday matchups as doing everyone a favor and giving them another game to watch. Yeah, if you subscribe to high end cable service just to get to that level. With Cox, I would have to go from $20 per month for basic service all the way up to $70 per month just to get NFL Network and that ONE stinking game.

A Democratic official told Hotsheet that Democrats did not request the change.

"The decision to move the NFL season opener was made by the league alone, not at the request of the [Democratic National Convention Committee] or Obama Campaign," said the official.

While the NFL season opening game will not conflict with Mr. Obama's remarks, it will clash with the second night of the three-night Democratic National Convention -- traditionally when the vice president speaks. The Democratic official said that because the schedule had not been worked out, it's not yet known if the game will take place as Vice President Biden is making his remarks at the convention.

In the 2008 election cycle, the NFL moved its opening game one hour earlier so that it would not conflict with prime time coverage of the party conventions on Thursday night. The Democratic official said Democrats had hoped that the game would once again be moved to an earlier time on Thursday.
