A loophole -- the drugs aren't technically legal but their use is "permitted" -- has allowed "coffee shops" to sell up to 500 grams of marijuana and hashish (a concentrated form of pot). The new law would prohibit the sale of hash, but Dutch cannabis would still be permitted; the hashish ban is largely due to the drug's foreign origins. "We are contributing to and accepting the existence of international criminal organizations. After all, you can't get the drugs here in a rowboat," one lawmaker said.

That seems dumb. Just ban importing hashish, let homegrown folks start making it, and you're pumping even more money into your own economy.

Reasoning is sound.

However it sounds more like they have some potential for making and selling hash of their own rather than importing it from shady organizations. I mean it's not like you GROW hash... it's made from dope and they have plenty of that and the article clearly states that's not going to change.

Tourism will go up in smoke

I believe that not long ago they really restricted non-residents/foreigners from partaking. The government said it was causing way too many problems.

I think this is a bit overblown. They aren’t banning pot, they are only banning hash.

And it would make a hell of a lot more sense to allow local hash production than to ban it altogether, if the SOLE reason was to avoid "contributing to international criminal organizations". Afterall, it would be much more effective – banning it will do nothing to stop importation and use of hash, it will only make the users into criminals.

Sounds like a good idea to allow local production but prohibit imports. But how would you know the money wasn't flowing out to the bad guys anyway?
