Pioli: John, we've put together a real nice offer for you that will keep you in Kansas City for a long time.

::Hands contract over::

Carlson: Peace.

I don't care that he jumped ship.

But I am very concerned that this team has no idea how to close on free agents.

Close on free agents? This team can't even get a visit scheduled.

You need to be less concerned about getting him and more concerned with, even damn Carlson didn't want to visit Pioli. That's the REAL problem.

No....the Vikings did what we should be doing to Winston.

They called his agent and made him an offer that he couldn't pass up. No negotiations needed.

Probably didn't want to accept a league minimum deal.

Who out there would? That'll be the guy we sign.

i am fine that he's not signing with us but let's be honest.

This was THE FIRST guy they brought in, their day 1 visit and effort, and they still couldnt get it done. Meanwhile, other teams were bringing in real talent, and closing for the most part.

Chiefs football 2012; can't even close on John Carlson as the first FA visit

its the Parcells Tree and the Patriot way that scares all the FA's away.

he signed for 5 yrs / $25M after missing all of 2011. Wow, didn't see him getting anywhere close to that....

From Rotoworld --
-----------------------

Vikings signed TE John Carlson, formerly of the Seahawks, to a five-year, $25 million deal.
The deal reportedly includes $11 million guaranteed. It's a shocking contract for a player who missed all of 2011 with a shoulder injury, especially since the Vikings appeared to discover a full-time player in Kyle Rudolph last season. Minnesota was likely forced to overpay for a player it wanted after Carlson reportedly received interest from "at least" eight teams. The deal dampens Rudolph's outlook in dynasty leagues, and hardly revives Carlson's. The Vikes can be expected to run a host of two-TE sets in 2012.

i look at it this way:
if Manning can attract any free agent you want then Cassel must scare them all to death.

It's a good year to be a tight end free agent for two main reasons.

1. The draft is incredibly thin at TE this year.

2. In a copycat league teams will want to go to more two TE sets with guys who can actually catch the ball.

Anybody bitching about us NOT signing Carlson (especially after his contract numbers are out) should probably be quiet the rest of Free Agency.

Vikings do five-year, $25 million deal with John Carlson

John Carlson

The Minnesota Vikings hosted tight end John Carlson for a free agent meeting on Wednesday, and they didn’t let him get out of town.

Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com reports that Carlson has agreed to terms with the Vikings on a five-year, $25 million contract. The deal reportedly contains $11 million in guaranteed money.

Per Caplan, the Chiefs wanted to sign Carlson “badly” on Tuesday, but the Vikings swooped in and blew him away with Wednesday’s offer. It’s a lot of money for a tight end who underwhelmed before 2011, and then missed all of last season with a shoulder injury.

Look for Carlson to play alongside fellow Notre Dame alum Kyle Rudolph in Minnesota’s two-tight end sets.

I don't buy that for a second.
And again if it means not signing marginal players to ridiculous contracts...I'm fine with it.

I disagree with that. I think bonekrusher hit the nail on the head.

I've made sarcastic posts in this thread. Am I upset that John isn't coming here? Not in the least.

I'm upset with the bigger picture aspect of the Chiefs problems.

Let's revisit this discussion two months from now.
As of right now the Chiefs have two or three significant FA's coming to town to visit with the team.

If in May we have no significant FA's signed...I'll believe the organization has a black eye.

Bennett to NYG.

Glad they didn't get Carlson. I'd go after the same type of player in Kevin Boss for less money. Depending on his injury. Believe he was released by the raiders or was rumoreed to be cut. Haven't heard anything on Kellen Davis visiting anyone.

The Chiefs reportedly went after Carlson to bolster their 2 TE attack.

Think about that one for a moment. Let it sink in a bit.....

.....

THAT'S RIGHT, KIDDOS! This motherfucker is completely incapable of coming up with his own idea. He's going to watch what Belichick does, then try to copy it here 2 years later. He's trying to install a 2 TE package when we have precisely zero TEs we can count on! Nah, let's not try to build around our personnel or anything - poppa Bill did it this way.

That's it. That's his motherfucking plan. Copy what the Patriots do.

Holy shit. This is a high level of incompetence.

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2012/3/14/2872073/john-carlson-vikings-chiefs

Carlson said that on that call that he made it to Kansas City last night but never did meet with the Chiefs because Spielman called and showed a "level of interest that was unparalleled."

So he was actually in KC. Just didn't make the 30-minute drive to Arrowhead from the airport.

How? He was at the airport and got an offer he couldn't refuse. I'm pretty sure everyone already knew that was pretty much the case.
