John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans have agreed to send linebacker DeMeco Ryans to the Eagles in exchange for an undisclosed draft choice.

The deal hinges on Ryans passing a physical Wednesday at Eagles headquarters.

Per FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the draft pick Houston acquires for Ryans will be a “mid-rounder.”

The Eagles must not have been particularly high on what is at least perceived to be a deep free-agent inside linebacker market. They’re willing to surrender the pick, plus pick up Ryans’ remaining base salaries of $5.9 million (2012), $6.6 million (2013), and $6.8 million (2014-2015).

Curtis Lofton, David Hawthorne, and London Fletcher remain available in free agency.

UPDATE 8:00 pm. ET: The Eagles announced the deal on Tuesday evening, and they gave up a fourth-round pick in the 2012 draft in exchange for Ryans. The Eagles and Texans also swapped 2012 third-round picks.

Hell I think a fourth is a steal for him and would have been stoked to get him here.

Texans got stupid.

Ryans would've been pretty great alongside DJ, IMO.

Eagles stole him.

I'm not understanding why Houston dealt him. They really haven't done anything to try and improve thier squad and that's the 3rd good player they've lost.

The Planet would be rioting if we'd had thier offseason.

Exactly....how great would a Ryans and DJ middle have been!

If memory serves, people were saying near the end of the season that Ryan wasn't a fit in a 3-4 at all. He had become a one-down player by the end of the year.

You wouldn't like him in the middle next to DJ?

Not if he doesn't fit a 3-4.

Ryans isn't a thumper.

In this 3-4, he would probably play DJs role.

Don't you think they could switch? DJ has become much better at shedding blocks and together their athleticism would be tough to beat.

He isn't, and he really wasn't a good fit in Wade Phillips one gap 3-4. He didn't look like he was fully recovered from tearing his Achilles the year before and was basically a two down player at most.

Ahhh...forgot about the torn ACL, could be on to something there. He would still be tempting as hell....not that it matters.

The only thing that gets Texansplanet in an uproar is the skyrocketing prices on date-rape drugs.

IIRC, Houston was in one of the worst cap situations in the NFL.

I'd really like us to go out and get Curtis Lofton. If for nothing else to have some great depth at the position

But from what I read this will somehow cost them cap room for now. This guy covers the Texans for the Chronicle

John McClain ‏ @McClain_on_NFL
I was wrong. Texans take a $2 mil hit on cap cause of prorated signing bonus, not $6.75 mil. That figure includes base salary. Sorry

Maybe it's thinking toward future signings of guys like Cushing.

They have several contracts coming up next year and he wasn't a fit for the 3-4. Sounds like the right move actually.

This seems to be big news worthy of being bump to the top of the page. Very interesting.
