Florio: Didn't you get the memo that you were not supposed to say Peyton Manning didn't want us...You were supposed to say we passed on Peyton Manning?

Pioli: (laughs)..Maybe that would've been smarter, I was asked a question and the reality is we did talk to Peyton and communicated with his folks. Thats the reality. We wanted to talk to him, and he didn't want to engage us. And thats okay. Thats the way it happens. I learned a long time ago, that, just because you want certain things, i.e., when I was in junior high, girls you wanna date want to have nothing to do with you and thats what happens sometimes.

There is no reason to hide or be ashamed. Peyton wanted to be in Denver and Im happy for him. I have a lot of respect for Peyton.

Florio: Well there was a memo last week that the little Devil on my right shoulder told me that I should craft a headline, Chiefs sign Peyton. Because it wasn't Peyton Manning, it was Peyton Hillis. Talk about how that came to be, because #1, the Browns let him hit the market, there was a little bit of discussion about the franchise tag, but he hit the market, he was supposedly interested in staying with Cleveland but you got him on a reported 1yr, 2.6 million dollar base deal, how did that come to be?

Pioli: As soon as FA started, he changed agents. We weren't exactly sure who the agent was with him coming out of the gate. but Brian Daboll who is our OC, he had crossed paths with Peyton in Cleveland, as a matter of fact, Peytons most successful season was working under Brian. I think that the relationship and understanding between those two enabled us to get into the race in a hurry.

Pioli: Peyton Hillis felt very comfortable about KC. It was a place that had no nonsense where he could get to work.

How many open competitions did he have with Brady?

The more he talks, the more I hate him.

It's freaking coach speak. Of course he's going to say that. You think Peyton Manning would've actually competed with Matt Cassel for a starting job?

Thats a good thing. If he was still on his high horse about knowing everything, he would do what he normally does, let the others talk and think they are stupid. I think his chatty ways are a sign that he is feeling uncomfortable with whats going on.

Maybe its me looking for something, but I think old Pioli was 100% behind Cassel, and thats why he didn't say word one about the situation. Now he is talking about it a decent amount. He may say out loud he is behind him, but I think in his mind he is thinking "I can't let Matt take me down."

I think if we were in a position to draft a QB he would do it. If every QB had declared and we had a chance at a solid one he would get them. We don't have that, and I think he is starting to worry he won't ever find a real replacement for Matt and its going to cost him.

It just baffles me the amount of interviews that he does that the question doesn't get asked about Cassel more.

Why aren't people asking Pioli how he could constantly trot out Cassel when he hasn't beaten a single team that finished with a winning record since he's been in KC.

It's possible since they seem more consumed with finding pieces around him than actually replacing him.

I've never seen a team so hell bent on masking the deficiencies of one player.

Its a horrible situation as a fan. You obviously always want your team to succeed, but in this spot one step forward may be end up being two steps back if it secures Matt anything. This roster is pretty solid. I am not sure Matt is going to be made to look bad this season.
