View Full Version : Prayer Request I need a prayer request for my whole family, my wife especially

Fat Elvis
03-21-2012, 10:54 PM
Today was a really tough day in the Fat Elvis household and we, especially my wife, could use as many prayers as we can get.

The day after Valentines day my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. After genetic tests and whatnot, the doctors decided that the best course of action was to do a simple lumpectomy followed up with radiation.

Today was the surgery for the lumpectomy and they found that the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes. Right now we are looking at another surgery in a couple of weeks that will entail a double mastectomy followed by radiation and chemo. We have two daughters, aged 6 and 13. Right now I am really scared as we are quickly approaching the one year anniversary of my niece passing away from her battle with breast cancer so that is really weighing heavy on us as a family.

I ask that you pray for strength for my wife as she battles this cancer, that you pray for strength for me to support her and my family in this time, pray for peace for my girls, and pray for wisdom for the doctors treating her.

We're going to beat this. I have no doubt, but right now is awfully tough.

Thank you and God Bless.

Craig, aka Fat Elvis

(My wife's name is Sarah)

PS- While I'm sure they may be well intended, please don't post any statistics or recommendations about treatments. Statistics just don't matter; we're going to beat this. We're going to treat this aggressively.

Stay positive, both of you. Don't dwell on the gloom and doom.

Find a support group, either from church or local.

For the long term:

1. Watch the diet. Exercise properly.

2. For a woman who will lose both breasts, the psychological impact is severe (after the surgery is done and the physical part is recovered). As a husband, you need to hug her and cherish her. Thank her to be the mother of your two lovely daughters. Bring surprised gifts to her once a while.

3. Find time to engage some local charity or church activities.

My wife encountered the similar situation 14 years ago. She is cancer free. May God bless you and your family.

A quick update: I posted late last night from the hospital; we are home again today to begin an initial recovery before going back to surgery the week of April 2. I would say my wife isn't looking foward to it, but she is pretty much knocked out on pain meds at the moment. We're going to get through this. We truely appreciate all the prayers and well wishes. They really do work.

My mom was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in late January. Cancer is a bullshit disease that shouldn't fucking exist. In our case, it's like a fucking nightmare you can't wake up from. It has taken any sense of what was once considered "normal" and thrown it out like yesterday's news. Hopefully everything goes right for your wife and they can totally eradicate it from her body and you guys can return to "normal". Many prayers to your wife, children, and yourself. You never realize how uplifting prayer requests like these are until you find yourself on the other end of one.

You and your wife have all of our best wishes. The Bosslady went through this crap 7 years ago. Although it was caught fairly early and inloved only one, she had a choice - lumpectomy or mastecomy. The cancer doc asked me for my opinion. I flat told the doc that I just played with them, but they were killing my wife, it was her choice not mine. So off it came. Afterward, the chemo was a biotch with the sickness and loss of hair, but so far so good. A good mental attitude and family support is a major plus.

A quick update: First of all, thank you everyone for your prayers. Sincerely.

My wife got her pathology report back and even though there was some cancer in her lymph nodes, it was basically contained in the sentinal lymph node (which had become entangled with another). So, only cancer in the two/one lymph node; all the other lymph nodes came back negative for cancer.

She will still have surgery on Friday morning, so please keep her in your prayers again, and then she will start chemo 6-8 weeks after that. Pray for her strength, her spirits and for wisdom for those treating her.

Thank you.

Another update: Wife had surgery on Friday for a bilateral mastectomy. Surgery went well, doctor didn't find any more (apparent) cancer. Wife responded much better to the surgery this time, even though it is a more radical procedure, and is back home recovering. I'm kind of amazed how she is out of the hospital 24 hours after that kind of surgery. Once she gets fully healed, she will start her chemo.

Those prayers are really working; we truely appreciate them.

I wanted to post another update about my wife today....

Yesterday my wife finished chemo and the oncologist said she is in full remission and that he beleives that the cancer is gone. My wife wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and share something we did during the chemo: My wife and I would fast for 2 days (48 hours) before chemo and 1 day (24 hours) after the treatment. We had done some research on this and she is now a firm believer that this will reduce the side effects of chemo tremendously. We have heard the horror stories of how bad the side effects of chemo can be, but with the fasting regemin, her side effects were negligible. There are currently some clinical trials being conducted at USC Davis Cancer Center and the Mayo Clinic and the results are supposed to be published later in the year, but my wife wanted me to tell as many people as possible about this in the hopes that if they or a loved one has to go through chemo that they might consider this as part of thier treatment.

Just make sure you talk to your doctor about doing this if you have to go through chemo. Anecdotally, my wife pretty much felt fine even though we were prepared for the worst case scenario for the side effects based on the stories we've heard from friends, family members and neighbors who have gone through the process. And the doctor was amazed at her blood counts throughout the whole chemo process.

Thank you for everyone's support and hopefully by sharing this info, we will be giving something back to the community.

Here is an article on fasting and chemotherapy that was posted just 6 days before my wife recieved her diagnosis:

Here is the link to the Mayo clinical trial:

(It looks like they are currently only looking at the safety of the fasting and the results won't be available this year.)

oh, and just to clarify, it is a pretty severe fast--water only for those three days...(but it isn't as bad as you would think)
