View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs Chasing NT Aubrayo Franklin

TRR

ESPN Bill Willamson - Kansas City Chiefs

Defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin, New Orleans free agent

Why: There has been some interest. Franklin is a solid 3-4 nose tackle who can be a solid rotational player for the Chiefs. It is one of the teamís biggest needs and the Chiefs could do worse than Franklin.

Warpaint Illustrated is also tweeting about the rumor since last week as well.

Apologies if repost...Interesting that he didn't "fit the scheme" last offseason.

Wow, maybe they won't take Poe.

I think they can find value later in the draft. My bet is they still draft someone, even if they sign Franklin

It would be nice if Powe became what everyone here thought he'd be.

I'd like the signing. For that matter, though, I like every signing at this point of the offseason. If we can bring five billion guys into camp, great.

Let’s look at a good fit, in my opinion, for each team. This doesn’t necessarily mean any of these players are on the team’s radar, but I think they are a good fit:

Let's go ahead and change the title of the thread.

Him wanting to be the highest paid last offseason also might have played a role, but he is from a different gap system. Doesn't mean he can't adjust, but last off season the money he wanted made the move too risky.

I'm surprised we didn't go after Shaun Rogers with his ties to Crennel. Although, both players were busts last year for new Orleans. Would either one of them be an upgrade for us over Amon Gordon?

he seems to be an underachiever, no thanks unless we sign him to a cheap 1 year deal

He was a 7th round pick right or close? Expectations are pretty low for guys like that.

A Franklin signing would give KC Franklin, Powe, Gordon and Toribio at NT. That would probably cancel them out for taking a NT high in the draft.

Last year, Aubrayo Franklin didn't fit what KC was looking for, in terms of intangibles. Wouldn't expect them to pursue him now either.

Good nose tackles don't hit the FA market every year.

I doubt that was the issue. If money was the only factor, why did he sign a fairly cheap 1 year deal with NO? You'd think we could have beat that if we wanted him.

Question - Is Franklin, or either the other top two FA nosetackles availalble - Garay or Shaun Rogers - an upgrade over Amon Gordon?

If so, then yeah, by all means sign one or even two of them. I still think we'd need to draft a NT in the early rounds though. This is a position where we'd need to have a solid rotation in place, not just one stop-gap type of a player. Our rotation consists of Gordon, Powe and Torribio as of right now

The Bad Guy
03-24-2012, 04:45 PM
The Chiefs have to do something there. I just don't get why they just want constant 1 year fillers for a position that's a dire need.

If Romeo thinks they can make Poe into a dominant NT, then fine, take him at 11.

Garay's not a fit for this defense. Neither is Rodgers.

Amon Gordon is a nice story, but relying on him for anything but 10 snaps a game is foolish.

Messier
03-24-2012, 04:51 PM
I wonder if Powe will get a look.

I do think they'll take a NT in the first 3 rounds.

Why is it false?

Chiefs aren't chasing him and its extremely unlikely that we have any of interest in him. Maybe it should just be changed to "some guy thinks we might sign Franklin, even though we didn't want him a year ago"

Well, if you read his thread title, specifically the part where it says "Chiefs Chasing NT Aubrayo Franklin," then read the story he posts, you will see that the title is false.

All of this was pointed out in post #8:

Then if you read alittle more........

There has been some interest. Franklin is a solid 3-4 nose tackle who can be a solid rotational player for the Chiefs

There has been some interest (incarcerated bob??) does not mean we are "chasing" him.

We "chased" Peyton Manning. Then got laughed at.

Yes we need a stud NT but Gordon didn't do too bad last year. He got some push up the middle where Gregg wasn't. I'd rather get a stud DE at this point and draft a NT.

That's interesting if you'll recall last year we tried to sign Rogers. Infact I believe we offered more money than the Saints who he signed with.

The thing about NT with our D is that we are in sub packages 50% of the time. NT is also a 2 down player so there is a question as to how much we should invest in that position. Does a team really want to spend an 11 pick on a 2 down player? If he's all world I would say O.K. but if he's just an avg NT I'd rather acquire him from else where.

To me Poe is a 5-tech/NT and he can play in some sub packages. It dosn't matter if it's from the nose or the end if you can get a dominate player for your front it could make a huge difference.

I kinda wish we kept Shaun Smith. He seemed like a great leader for our defensive line and can play some NT. We still may have needed another NT anyway. Not sure how Jerrell Powe is working out. I have hopes for him.

I really hope Powe plans out too. If the team doesn't think so then I imagine we go NT in first especially if Poe is available.

Poe isn't a nose tackle and he's really not a dominant player.
