Great defense (and EJ's big time shot making) won that game. Withey expectedly neutralized Sullinger (he has a tremendous difficulty with size and length as shown with Harrelson last year), but Robinson actually dealt with Deshaun Thomas quite well. We were fortunate he got into foul trouble, though. I also loved how the stupid, whiny hacker (and I shouldn't forget...flopper) was the goat at the end.

UK is the favorite on Monday (and I'm not sure anybody can beat that team's best), but KU has shown themselves to be a great defensive team when they want to be. If KU mucks it up a bit and plays like tonight, they have a great chance to win.

Kentucky was odd tonight... when they impressed me, they really impressed me. Yet, Louisville hung around despite not playing all that well and giving away at least 10-15 points off missed dunks and unforced errors within 2 feet of the basket.

In the first game, Kansas played them close in the first half, and Kentucky went on a run... I could see the same thing happening in the first half that happened in that game and that's happened in just about every game this tournament... Kansas doesn't play well in the first half, but finds themselves in striking distance. So, it comes down to the last 10-15 minutes, and hopefully Kansas plays like they have absolutely nothing to lose, and Kentucky stumbles when all of a sudden they're in a one possession game with 5 minutes left against a team that actually plays defense....

There's zero downside Monday night. Lose by 1, lose by 20... don't give a fuck. Kentucky is supposed to win. They're supposed to be head and shoulders above everyone else.

UK goes through its passive stretches. They even did it against Baylor in the 2nd half after they blew them out in the first. This UK team has way more talent overall than Calipari's Memphis team did, but that team worked a lot harder at all times. Still, when this UK team is on and focused, nobody can touch them.

If the game is close at the end (and it just might be considering KU's D), though, I would find it hard to bet against Kansas.

Awful call. It was one of those cases where the ref was just anticipating a call there, regardless of whether it happened or not. That happens a lot at this level.

If OSU had won the game after that, it probably would have been a huge story. It should have been a basket and a foul (and game over).

Yeah... if they play to their potential for 40 minutes, forget about it... but, that probably won't happen.

Not sure how I feel about Kansas (still in shock... seriously, I never feel like this)... they could come out like they did versus UNC, but that's probably not a good thing. They probably need to grind it out for 30-40 to win, since they won't get easy shots against UK.

Yeah... if they play to their potential for 40 minutes, forget about it... but, that probably won't happen.

Not sure how I feel about Kansas (still in shock... seriously, I never feel like this)... they could come out like they did versus UNC, but that's probably not a good thing. They probably need to grind it out for 30-40 to win, since they won't get easy shots against UK.

****, I don't know. They're playing Monday.

They're playing Monday.

Maybe it'll start sinking in tomorrow.
Yeah, I think the best chance to beat that team is to muck it up and a play a B10 style defensive game like tonight. Usually it is good when KU plays a fast-paced running style game against teams (as their athleticism allows them to excel and the fast pace gives them more possessions to prove their superiority), but I'm not sure they want to do that against a group this fast and talented.

4 bars in nyc completely packed with the KU brand spilling into the streets as we move to the pinnacle of all sport.

Never have I seen Kansas take over the greatest city in the world until tonight. We've always been here but now its global.

Hope Kentucky's ready because their snake oil program is about to get trumped by the greatest university in America.

By the end of the game, I hated the bitch... and it's fitting you mentioned Hansbrough, because he was a bitch, too. Aldrich making Hansbrough his bitch, and Taylor making the plays at the end of the game (despite shooting 4/13 or whatever) when everyone was talking about Craft, were just epic.
I don't think anybody that watches Craft for even a single game can help but hate his attitude, style, and "defense." At least Hansbrough had talent enough to forge a successful NBA career...Craft is just a talentless hacker. I just loved his attempts to drive on Withey throughout the game.

It wasn't the refs (as mentioned, they got a huge call in their favor that kept them in the game at the end and it was really quite equally called throughout). It was the fact that KU was simply tougher and better defensively than them.

The funny thing is they're losing a ton of guys for next year (assuming Sullinger and Thomas leave as they should). This will be the end of their little stretch of elite play for a while.

FYI in case you didn't know Craft's lane violation was as clear cut as they get "The free-thrower shall not break the vertical plane of the free-throw line with either foot until the ball strikes the ring, flange or back- board or until the free throw ends." This is great stuff.

NEW ORLEANS -- Jeff Withey destroyed Jared Sullinger on Saturday night, destroyed him in every way one player can destroy another. On the other hand, Jeff Withey probably did Sullinger a favor. Because if Withey can reduce Sullinger to a puddle of pouting goo, imagine what Kentucky's Anthony Davis would have done to Sullinger on Monday night.

"I could barely see," Sullinger said. "I couldn't see over a 7-footer, and a 6-10 guy [Robinson]."

For Withey, it was a repeat of his mastery in the Midwest Regional title game against North Carolina, which he took over in the final two minutes by blocking a shot by John Henson and then another by Stilman White. When that run began, Kansas clung to a 71-67 lead. The final score was 80-67. North Carolina didn't score again, and while Withey didn't do all of that, he led it.

Same as Saturday, when he immediately inserted himself into Sullinger's cranium by blocking Sullinger's first shot, which was also Ohio State's first shot. Early in the second half Withey forcibly removed Sullinger from the game by blocking his shot three times in 40 seconds. Don't get me wrong, Sullinger didn't leave the game. He kept playing.

He just wasn't any good.

In the second half, Sullinger was 2 of 11 from the floor. He was so out of sorts, he was jacking 3-pointers and 20-footers and flopping like a fish for phantom fouls and gesturing to referees and whining to his coach -- and to Thad Matta's credit, he was having none of it.

After one particularly ridiculous stretch for Sullinger, when Withey blocked him and blocked him again and again and was so far into Sullinger's head that his next touch started 20 feet from the basket and ended in the same spot, with a 20-foot brick, Sullinger saw his shot floating errantly toward the rim and dove like a Spanish soccer player, punctuating the flop by slamming his arm on the floor. The sound effect didn't work, and neither did Sullinger's whining and gesticulating to the refs, and when a timeout was called shortly thereafter and Sullinger whined his way to the bench, he found no comfort there. Matta was red-faced and yelling at him, looking stunned that his All-American, his future NBA power forward was reduced to such shenanigans by a rail-thin fifth-year senior like Jeff Withey.

About that NBA stuff ...

Jeff Withey destroyed Sullinger, got so far into his head that Sullinger was useless -- and pointless -- in the final 5 1/2 minutes when Kansas was rallying from a six-point deficit to win. In that span, Sullinger missed a layup with 4:39 left and he missed a jumper with 3:19 left and then he just didn't shoot again. Ohio State was trying to hold off Kansas, and it chose to do that by giving shots to anyone but All-American Jared Sullinger.

"The block on Buford was unbelievable," Self said. "They had us. He turns two points for Ohio State into two points for us."

That's a four-point swing right there.

Kansas won by two.

See my point here? Kansas won Saturday to reach the national championship game -- and Jeff Withey did that.

I almost feel bad for the butt hurt OSU fans that we can beat them with one good half and after we spot them a 9 point lead. Almost.

I feel it funny that a lot of posters would have said "they" instead of "we" if KU would have lost.

I'm glad KU won. My two daughters are partying in Lawrence. One graduated from KU a couple years ago; the other is walking down the hill this spring.

I don't know how the Hell this team is doing it, but the team that makes the fewest mistakes wins. Self is the master of getting opposing teams to implode.

I hope Robinson can sink the short shots on Monday. He's going to need to, for KU to win.

As most of you know my brother, a KU alum, was murdered last year. The year before that, my father passed away.

I've been wearing a two-tiered necklace with each capsule housing their ashes. Ever since the tournament started and KU has been down, I'd grab my necklace and ask for my brother and dad to be here with me.

And each time, KU had come back to win!

Never underestimate the power of the KU spirit.

This is very emotional for me. One more win. Just win one more!

The one thing I noticed tonight is that Davis contests everything.... and Kansas has relied so much on easy baskets this tournament... crap. Didn't realize Taylor was 15/17 FTs in the first matchup... that's 15 of 65 points from one guy on the line. Wow.

They'll need to light it up from outside or really muck it up.
Yeah, if you're going to beat UK, you've got to hit outside shots. It's really the only way (as Indiana showed). Going into the key where Davis is will generally not lead to good things...he eats everything up.

Withey dominated sullinger. It was kind of embarrassing. After he rocked Cuse I was pretty worried. It he was a tremendous non factor.

They have got to find a way to officiate these games better both games were called horribly. All 4 teams just got blatant bad calls all night. Terrible. And they've got to stop letting teams slog it all up. It is really bad basketball.

I have no idea how KU keeps winning. They have no business being in the championship. It is utterly amazing that the stacks up teams get beat by NIU and VCU and THIS one is playing for the title. I'll say it again. This team has 5 guys that can ball.

Hopefully self can pull another miracle.

That's true, I hadn't thought about that. Craft is like a way more annoying version of Dogus Balbay (partially because of his whiny attitude and partially because he gets all of this attention for being a good defensive player when he just fouls all game long because he doesn't have the necessary foot speed to keep up with more athletic and better players).

This is what makes Kansas Athletics so special.

I do not know if I agree with that, never underestimate the hate Duke/UNC receives on a regular basis. With the attention the coastal teams receive on a regular basis, I doubt KU could ever be the most hated team in the nation.

I didn't see nearly as much as I would have liked, since I was trying to watch KU and work, too, but that looked like a great offensive game. Not just like the first half of UNC/KU, with a bunch of layups, but players on both ends really bringing it and making shots.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. But, maybe Teahan and EJ play out of their minds or something... which for Teahan, means hitting like three 3s, but still...

Jeff Withey destroyed Jared Sullinger on Saturday night, destroyed him in every way one player can destroy another. On the other hand, Jeff Withey probably did Sullinger a favor. Because if Withey can reduce Sullinger to a puddle of pouting goo, imagine what Kentucky's Anthony Davis would have done to Sullinger on Monday night.

Yeah, Withey dominated him in just about every way a player can. He completely broke his spirit. But what's amazing to me about this is why anybody thought this was a surprise (at least the outcome of that particular matchup). Pundit after pundit kept predicting Sullinger would have a huge game despite Withey's presence and the knowledge that Sullinger has a huge problem with size/length in defenders. Did they just not watch Withey this year (probably a good guess considering the pundits)? He's as good a defensive presence anybody not named Anthony Davis in the NCAA.

I said it. People hate KU. Its one of the prices you pay when you're so good. What I love is that this is all house money. KU is winning now like they've never won before. We never get one of these "destiny" teams. KU is always expected to do well and go far. That's what makes the losses so visible. When you're ALWAYS there shit is gonna happen.

The fact that pretty much everyone expects Kentucky to win is a good position to be in. Self owns right now. He's undefeated in the Final Four. If you wanna piece UK come and take it. But somethin tells me Boss is gonna be ready...

Kentucky fans riot after defeat of Louisville in Final Four

Post-game revelry in Lexington turned to destruction and fire-setting Saturday night as University of Kentucky fans swarmed the streets surrounding campus, prompting police in riot gear to move in.

College antics in alcohol-fueled celebrations of UK's Final Four victory quickly escalated, as young people set couches and two cars ablaze and hurled beer cans into clusters of party-goers.

Firefighters responded to about 50 nuisance fires, mostly couches set afire on purpose, according to Battalion Chief Ed Davis of the Lexington Fire Department. Ten people were injured, he said.

A spokeswoman for the city said several people had been arrested, though the number remained unclear. There had not been any mass arrests, she said.

Alcohol was everywhere and bottles smashed throughout the area.

Police in riot gear patrolled the party areas and sprayed fire extinguishers on fans who attempted to damage vehicles.

Police attempted to clear the street, moving in twice by 10:20 p.m., but it wasn't until about 11 p.m. that the crowd began to disperse significantly.

Before then, revelers climbed on car tops, flipped three vehicles on State Street to the cheers of others and attempted to flip others while fans chanted "Cats, Cats, Cats."

UK and Lexington police expecting a rowdy night had increased patrols on campus and prepared to close streets in party areas. A triage center was opened at a fire station on Woodland Avenue.

Authorities issued an advance warning to fans that fires and vandalism would result in arrests, but parties and drinking started early.

"They try to flip a car. Police push them off and they try to flip another one," said Logan Johnson, a UK freshman. "It's pretty crazy. We are going to the championship. I don't blame people."

UK junior Michael Soto said he had never seen anything like it.

"Bourbon Street doesn't have anything on State Street," he said.

Joey Frederick, who joined the revelry in Lexington, said Saturday's win warranted a party on campus. "We are the best team in America," he said. "I think houses should burn."

In stark contrast, about 100 University of Louisville students gathered peacefully on Cardinal Boulevard after the game, cheering as though their team had won.

"They had to fight for it," said Tombo Owen, an 18-year-old freshman who waved a U of L flag within the mass of fans.

The crowd was mostly jubilant, though at one point a UK bag was briefly lit ablaze.

Cardinal Boulevard was blocked to traffic at about 4 p.m. between Third and Fourth streets, as university police had announced they would do earlier in the week. But with no incidents of trouble reported anywhere on campus, the road was reopened to traffic at about 9 p.m., after the post-game revelry began to subside, said John Drees, a university spokesman.

Fans gathering in front of the Cardinal Towne development chanted Cards slogans, as well as a few anti-Cats slogans. A group of women on a nearby balcony shouted at passing motorists.

"I've never been more proud to be a U of L student," said Charles Leonard, a 20-year-old sophomore. "They played their hearts out. You can't ask for more."

Demetrius Ellery, 36, watched the game at the Cluckers restaurant in Cardinal Towne, along with many other fans.

Ellery said he thought the Cardinals didn't play well enough to win and he wished Kentucky the best in the national championship game.

"Why shouldn't we be happy for the other team?" he said.

Fans of UK and U of L celebrated on Broadway near 26th Street in a low-key gathering of people hanging out on the sidewalks and cars cruising the street. Police were stationed in the area, but no traffic had to be diverted and the celebration remained peaceful.

There was a Kentucky fan at the bar last night. She was disgusting.

I am weirdly optimistic about the Kentucky game. They are stacked with talent, but I think they can be out-hustled. They can get kind of lazy because they are used to winning in blowouts. They also haven't been tested much this year as far as close games or having to come from behind. I'm not sure how well they would handle it. We have the best coach in the business reviewing tape right now looking for some kind of flaw to exploit. We also have nothing to lose. Even if we get blown out, it takes nothing away from what has been a historic season.

But Kentucky CAN be beaten.

KU led at the half in the game against Kentucky earlier this year. And KU was a bad team at that point.
