The first game of the 2012 NFL regular season will be the same matchup as the last game of the 2011 NFL regular season: Cowboys at Giants.

The NFL announced today that the Giants, in the traditional role of the Super Bowl champions, will host the first game of the season at MetLife Stadium, and they’ll do it against the Cowboys on Wednesday, September 5, on NBC.

It’s the third consecutive Cowboys-Giants game to air on NBC in prime time; both of last season’s games between the two NFC East rivals were also NBC Sunday night games.

It’s the ninth consecutive year that the defending Super Bowl champions have hosted the regular-season opener. It’s also the first time that the game has been on a Wednesday, as the game was moved a day earlier this year to accommodate President Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Makes sense.

Super Bowl Champs versus one of their biggest rivals.

I'm sure people will bitch that the Cowboys got this game, however.

In NY, I'm guessing...

Good! The Cowboys start off the year with a prime time divisional loss to the defending champs.

Giants/Cowboys had two Sunday Nighters last season.
Fuck it, let's do it again this time around!

They equal huge ratings... bottom line. They typically put the SB team from the previous year in this game... and they pick a matchup that means something. Add Dallas to that mix and you have instant huge ratings.

I know. I get it, trust me.
It just peeves me to see the same four teams on again and again and again...

Week 2: Eagles at Redskins
Week 3: Redskins at Cowboys
Week 4: Cowboys at Redskins
Week 5: Eagles at Eagles
Week 6: Cowboys vs Indians
Week 7: Giants vs 2007 Giants
Week 8: Eagles vs Giants vs Cowboys

...and on and on we go with this stupid division...

In the NHL, it irks me that the Penguins get a slew of nationally televised games. Weird, I know...but I like to see a wide variety of teams. :shake:

Sweet, I won't have to annoy my wife by watching a game in the middle of the week. Can you imagine the over on the number of times the word Manning is said in a single broadcast? I think I'd hurl.

Great game to start the season off with, I'm shocked that they could find a way to make it Giants vs Broncos...

I agree with the notion that Sunday Night Football is more like NFC East Football.

Thankfully the Eagles will only be on 5 or 6 times this year

Cowboys 24. G-Men 3 at the start of the 4th & will end in another epic fail for Jerry Jones
FINAL
G-Men 28
C-boys 24

I thought the Giants would host the Packers in the season opener. The Cowboys?

It is only the second time the opener will be between teams from the same division. The selection of the Cowboys was a surprise because many expected the Giants would play Green Bay or New Orleans. A game against the Packers would have been a matchup of the two most recent Super Bowl champions.

Jerry Jones on John Mara: I want to settle it on the field

There’s the fact that the two teams are rivals in the NFC East, meaning that their games always have a little extra buzz, and then there’s the matter of the salary cap penalty imposed on the Cowboys for their spending during the uncapped 2010 season. Giants owner John Mara, the chairman of the NFL Management Council Executive Committee, has been outspoken in support of the penalties against the Cowboys and Redskins. Over the weekend, Mara said that the teams are lucky that they didn’t lose draft picks in addition to stripping of them of cap space that now goes to the Giants and 27 other teams.

“I would like to settle this on the field,” Jones said before passing on the suggestion of a halftime boxing match with his fellow owner.

I like how the reporter makes it sound that John Mara is the one responsible for handing out penalties to the Redskins and Cowboys. 32 NFL owners voted on this - 30-2.

Fuck yes NFC East baby!

Regular season schedules have historically come out around Mid-April, so not much longer until we find out ours.

I actually enjoy watching NFC East matchups. As well as Steelers/Ravens and Patriots/Jets. I just like good football.
