Scout on Dontari Poe: Watch him play, he didn’t do anything
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 1, 2012, 7:38 AM

The excitement from Dontari Poe’s phenomenal Scouting Combine performance is starting to fade in the eyes of many league observers, who are turning their attention back to Poe’s tape — and not liking what they’re seeing.

Poe, the Memphis defensive tackle who took the Combine by storm by running a 4.87-second 40-yard dash at 346 pounds and bench-pressing 225 pounds 44 times, does not impress many of those who have watched him play.

“He’ll be overdrafted,” one personnel man told the Times of Trenton. “He did all of that at the Combine, so some team will take him way higher than he should go. I mean watch him play, just watch. He didn’t do anything. And he wasn’t playing at a very high level, either. All I know is he had one sack last year and it came against Austin Peay. You probably didn’t even know Austin Peay had a football team.”

When Poe announced in December that he was entering the NFL draft, he said he’d been told he projected as a second-rounder who could move into the first round with a good Combine. Poe didn’t have a good Combine — he had a great Combine — and he started being discussed as a Top 5 pick.

So those who watched him bench press and run 40 yards in a straight line are more impressed than those who watched him play football. That’s not a good sign.

i believe that Pioli is more of a tape guy than combine guy so if his tape is really that bad then we won't draft him at all.

I can think of better things to do with the pick, even if he fell to our second rounder...which I think is very possible.

This. If there's anything you give credit to Pioli for, it's that he is incredibly thorough in pre-combine evaluation. As is Phil Emery. Remember that one of the big reasons Pioli fell in love with Eric Berry was the humility he showed in helping out his equipment managers.

Then again... he also fell in love with Baldwin for a lot of the opposite reasons.

Either way, I think in Pioli's book, the talent has to be unbelievable to overcome flaws in work ethic.

I have been saying this the whole time. Poe is not our guy at 11.

I guess it depends on Romeos opinion of him.

Was the kid playing with an injury that made his effort appear not quite top notch? Did he not have proper coaching that lead to him not being disruptive due to lacking fundamentals?

Or is he just another lazy fat man that was always double teamed?

He does have the physical tools it takes to be top 5 at his position...if Romeo feels he has the mental tools it takes (which is doubtful) the. At some point the risk meets the possible reward and he is wroth the pick.

That point may well be our second round pick, but I doubt it.

I'd much rather take Chapman in the second or third than Poe.

DL's in round one are always a crap shoot for the Chiefs. Present roster company included.
