Who's stayin? Who's gone? Who is the next up and coming star? What should we expect our team to be like next season and beyond?

I'm not looking past the title game, but I was just looking at the roster and was wondering what it will look like next year with Robinson and Taylor gone.

We're actually poised to have a pretty damn talented team with Withey, Releford, and Elijah returning. Well, hopefully Elijah returns anyway.

Which means, of course, that we'll lose in the field of 32 to a Missouri Valley team

Tyshawn, TRob and Teahan are gone.

We get Perry Ellis (most skilled freshman big since Shady), BMac, Traylor, Landed Lucas, Andrew White, Anrio Adams and Zach Peters.

I think the starting 5 will probably be:

Tharpe, EJ, Releford, Ellis and Whithey.

BMac, Traylor and White will all probably get meaningful minutes off the bench.

I think Kevin Young could be somewhat important next year too. A full offseason in the weight program.

Probably not with Danny leaving. But who knows with these kids...

I know Parker is big on Huddy being the trainer.

You never know about these kids though, so thats true.

They are coming back. Young might play a little because I'm sure Self likes his D. But let's be honest, they only reason those 2 have played this year is because our bench is so barren. We'll have gobs more talent in '13.

Wesley is really athletic, he could provide some minutes similar to what he did this year.

Agreed. He has a really good nose for the ball. He's been a really rebounding spark for the KU in his limited minutes, especially on offense. Couple that nose for the ball with size and kid could be something special.

Yeah. I know that's how the game works. You want your best players on the court. But I mean, if we had the freshman talent this year, we wouldn't see Releford become the special kind of player he now is. Now look at him. He's staged to become a real dominant player and a leader next year on defense AND offense. He showed up in a huge way last night.

That's an interesting point that the last few years, our best players seem to have shown up at odd points in time VERY late in their college careers. I remember watching Thomas Robinson flash in the tournament last year. Nothing spectacular, but I remember thinking to myself... wow, this kid might actually be really good. Before that, it was Cole Aldrich. Before his big final season, he was a huge contributor in the tournament prior in scrap time.

We kind of knew Releford would fall into that role. But I'm still intrigued by Young. He looks to me like the Robinson and Aldrich of this year's team (a guy getting scrap minutes but flashing some serious potential in that time).

The guy I've been most impressed by lately is Elijah. He's just been phenomenal in the tournament. He's been very clutch, he's just one of those guys that thrives under pressure. I can see him being a real leader next year.

ya, I thought he was going to bust out but he really got it together and stepped up.

I've seen it over and over. The team will look a little flat, then Elijah jumps out on a fast break and triggers a 10-point run. The team seems to feed off his energy.

The funny thing is that when the NCAA declared that McLemore and Traylor were partial qualifiers and had to sit out 2012, it pretty much looked like the season was shot to hell, and the only consolation was "well, this year is going to suck, but we'll be pretty loaded in 2013."

Yeah, when we went out early with 4 fouls I didnt think there was a possibility they would stay in that game. He was always clutch with a timely 3 pointer.

Withey can't rebound or score effectively enough to play in the NBA right now. He'll stay. Aldrich was better than him in just about every way and he's been stuck on the bench for his entire career.

It's going to basically be EJ and Withey's team next year, so they'll both get draft boosts from that.

He's also quite terrible at most aspects of basketball (and fouls every 30 seconds that he's in). If he gets minutes next year over all that depth, something went wrong.

My guess for the starting five will be this...

PG: Elijah Johnson
SG: Ben McLemore
WF: Travis Releford
PF: Perry Ellis
C: Jeff Withey

Bench: Young, Traylor, Tharpe, White, Adams, Lucas and Peters. Wouldn't surprise me one of either Lucas or Peters red-shirts. KU will be extremely deep next season which is a normal Bill Self team. Not everyone will get a lot of minutes but the competition will be fierce. I still expect a VERY GOOD team.

**** yeah.

Well, lets be honest. Monday is going to be rough, and Bill Self has basically said this Kentucky team is a lot better than 2008 Memphis, and our team probably couldn't beat our 2008 team. I know people, including most KU fans and me have been underestimating the team in the tournament, and they've come back again and again with incredible dominating defense in the 2nd half, but I'm afraid Kentucky is a bridge too far. This game looks so lop-sided on paper, that it may be worth cracking the record books to refresh everyone on the scoring margin record for a national championship game. (though I think our defense will prevent the final score from looking silly)

We're not supposed to be here. Hell, given December, we weren't supposed to be in the regional finals either, its easier to take things in stride when there's really nothing to lose, pride-wise. KU won the jackpot, cashed out most of the black $100 casino chips they won to go home with, and are now playing with some house money until they bust.

Thomas Robinson don't care, he'll just do whatever he wants.

I hope you're not showing up for the pregame pep talk. ;)

I guess they could watch Missouri and Norfolk State or Miracle on Ice or the NYG beating the 18-0 Patriots or that one time Louisville lost by 8 to the greatest college basketball team ever assembled after shooting 34% and committing approximately 4000 unforced errors.

I have no expectations of Kansas winning and I understand what you're saying, but I might actually be more surprised if they lose by 15+ than if they actually win.

Uh, no. They're not facing LeBron James and the Miami Heat here. They're facing a bunch of young, inexperienced college kids like themselves on a neutral court (albeit highly athletic and talented ones). If KU was to face this team 10 times in a row in a game like this, they'd probably win three or four times. I don't know that I'd bet on them to win tomorrow, but that's hardly the kind of odds to start writing anybody off.

In fact, despite UK's superiority in his rankings, KenPom only ranks them as a 3 point favorite (which is really nothing at all in basketball, it's a single possession). OSU was the same 3 point favorite last night.

And I shouldn't have to remind anybody that Louisville, a far worse team than Kansas offensively (and basically equivalent defensively), just played a competitive game with Kentucky down to the final few minutes.

Also, this Kentucky team is not better than the 2008 Memphis team. There is way more talent overall, but the effort and defense overall just isn't there like it was for that team. They rely on Anthony Davis to bail them out all too often and they can be beaten because of that.

2012 Kentucky: .9668 Pyth, 123.1 AdjO, 88.6 AdjD
2008 Memphis: .9776 Pyth, 121.3 AdjO, 83.9 AdjD

2012 Kansas: .9504 Pyth, 114.8 AdjO, 86.1 AdjD
2008 Kansas: .9859 Pyth, 125.3 AdjO, 82.8 AdjD
