Never specifically requested prayers here to my knowledge (however I got some great support when my wife was diagnosed with cancer), but the family could use some prayers for my Dad. He was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillain%E2%80%93Barr%C3%A9_syndrome)last week and it's been pretty tough dealing with it for all of us, but especially him. It's such a strange thing for someone that's 57 years old (and never been in the hospital) to go from splitting wood one day to not being able to move his extremities about 28 hours later.

He's doing really well and making great progress, but some set backs are making it harder on him and the family. It's really difficult to see the man you've respected and looked up to your whole life be in this kind of condition. It is treatable, but the road to recovery is very long. I'd never heard of GBS before and we're still learning about it, but what a terrible thing it has turned out to be.

All the best to you and your father. The prognosis seems good for this syndrome so keep RJ's thoughts in mind and "Don't forget that he's still the same guy".
Stay strong and supportive and he'll get through this easy.

Being somewhat familiar with GBS, I know it's a long, slow road to recovery. I wish you & your family best of luck and lots of patience.

Found that they believe the trigger for the GBS was Lymes Disease. So he is currently battling both which sucks. He is doing okay otherwise, but this just makes a long road a little longer. Thanks for everyones prayers and well wishes.

Prayers to you.

My parents' neighbor had that about 15 years ago. Said his feet were numb when he woke that morning and he was totally paralyzed by that evening. Only thing he could move was his eyelids. Was on a respirator also.

He had to learn to walk and talk all over again.

Hope your Dad comes out of it all right.

Thanks RJ and you are right, I should post an update.

Since my last update my Dad has been on an emotional and physical roller coaster. He went from a rehab center to a nursing home because he wasn't progressing enough for the insurance company (love how insurance companies get to push far too many buttons with our health care). The nursing home was a colossal disaster as they were ill prepared to deal with my Dad's condition and were horribly managing his pain. One of the physical therapists there had the sense to suggest that my Dad was still in the acute phase of GBS and perhaps he needed to go back to the hospital.

He was transferred back to a local hospital (to everyone's relief) and they did discovery that he was still in the acute phase of GBS. GBS can continue to get worse for 4 weeks or more and unfortunately Dad's did just that.
Once they figured this out they sent him to West Virginia University hospital for further testing. He spent about a week there and they were wonderful. They treated the GBS more and then brought a pain management team in to get that under control. With the additional treatments and pain under control, Dad began to show signs of improvement.

He has since been transferred back to the rehab facility closer to home and today will be his 4th day there. Dad is continuing to progress slowly and we truly believe this thing has finally turned the corner. He still has a long road ahead, but getting some movement back in his legs has given him new spirit and faith.

Thanks for everyone's concerns and prayers.
