Less than a week before draft,CB Alfonzo Dennard arrested for assault

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Blogger

Dennard was slated as between a second- and fourth-round draft pick. (US Presswire)

A few days ago, we told you about the positive drug test supplied by Ohio State tackle Mike Adams, and how silly it was for Adams to get caught with drugs in his system at the NFL combine. You know what's even sillier than testing positive for drugs at what amounts to a job interview that could pay you millions of dollars?

Allegedly punching a cop in the face less than a week before you find out your next job.

Yet, that's what Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard supposedly accomplished early Saturday morning, and according to the Omaha World Herald, he was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault on an officer, another third-degree assault charge relating to a bar fight and resisting arrest.

Dennard was slated by many draft observers as worth between a second- and fourth-round pick in next week's draft (though, at one point in January, CBSSports.com's Rob Rang thought Dennard could be a first-round pick).

Wrote Rang three months ago: The Cowboys' defense made gains under Rob Ryan, but inconsistencies in the secondary led to plenty of breakdowns. Sources tell me the Cowboys were very intrigued last year with Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara. Perhaps they'll pull the trigger on a Husker cornerback this time around with the short but physical Dennard, who many scouts are giving a higher grade to this season than they did his former teammate at this same time last year."

But Dennard's stock seems to have fallen in recent months, and this arrest certainly won't help.

According to Lincoln, Neb., police, the 22-year-old Dennard was fighting with another man outside a bar at 2:15 a.m. When officers tried to break it up, Dennard allegedly pushed and then punched an officer in the face. Police said it took four officers to secure and arrest Dennard.

This isn't the first time this year Dennard has been caught fighting. He also got ejected from the 2012 Capital One Bowl for tussling with South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffrey.

I take that blame, Dennard said after the game. I'm not that type of person. I think (NFL teams) know that."

At this point, though, that might be a much harder claim to make.

Dumbass.

Yup. How far's he gonna fall?

If I were an agent I tell my draft prospect to stay out of the bar until after the draft. It might even be in the contract because that shit could cost me alot of money.

He was a consensus 2nd-3rd round pick before this happened. Wonder if he could drop as far as the 4th?

I think so. He got kicked out of the bowl game, didn't participate in the SR bowl because of an injury, and now hits a cop? I wouldn't be surprised if some teams pull him off the board but I'll say this he was a better player than Prince who was drafted in the first round.

Put together all that and I only get one thing...you are a big homer.

Completely agree. When Prince was here, he got all the love and all the pub.

I saw teams not throwing at him and choosing Dennard. And he answered pretty much every time.

Could be a real nice value pick depending on where he's falling to.

Because anyone with that much baggage should be way down in the draft and you still want them in the 3rd. He was seen as a 2nd to 3rd round pick anyway. Add an arrest and assault and he is lucky to go in the 4th.

Yup. Remember when Blackmon was owning Prince so they switched up and put Dennard on him and pretty much shut him down. This year he shutdown McNutt who's going to be a 2-3 round guy. The talent certainly is there.

McNutt runs a 4.6 forty...I would hope Dennard could shut him down.

I'm not familiar with the game where Dennard shut down Blackmon. Was that two years ago?

Dennard hurt himself by this, but nothing fatal.

Dennard doesn't project to the NFL as well as Prince. He's not as big, not as fast; simply not as athletic.

Some folks may look at him and see Brandon Flowers, but I see Javier Arenas with character issues and limited kick return skills. I think he projects as little more than a nickle back at the next level.

I'd take him in the 4th...maybe. I certainly wouldn't take him with a 3rd when you'll likely still have guys like Chapman, T. Johnson and Taylor around; maybe even Osweiler. There will be guys with both higher ceilings and lower floors than this guy. If you want a safe pick, there will be far safer. If you want a boom/bust pick, there will be far higher ceiling guys.

grab him in the 4th if you think it humbled him. No need for thugs in KC, they always end up letting you down at some point.

No, A homer is someone who wanted to draft a guy that was 5th rounder in the 2nd and then compares him to Tom Brady like you did.

You must have not read the article where the scout said Dennard grades out higher than Prince. Prince was a first round pick so if it's true Dennard grades out higher then yes based on talent it's a good 3rd round pick. The reason he'll likely be there in the 4th is because he just committed a felony. I'm not surprised you don't understand this.

You need to post a link to me either comparing Stanzi to Brady or saying we should take him in the 2nd.

Either way you want to take him in the 3rd, which is where most mocks had him going even before he was stupidly arrested a week before the draft. You said he was a steal in the 3rd. Doesn't matter how much talent you have if you have zero judgement.
