Apparently Samuel will restructure his contract for Atlanta. The article does not specify what pick the Falcons are giving up to get him:

The Kolb trade was a cluster fuck for both teams.

They lost this year's 1st and 4th in that trade.

So if the reported 6th rounder (NFL.com is still saying not yet reported) is true, the Falcons have:

Which would you rather have if these were your two choices:

Julio Jones
Asante Samuel
no draft choices

or

Jonathan Baldwin
Justin Houston

Jalil Brown
Stanford Routt
1st round pick in 2012
4th round pick in 2012

This may be true. But to this point, both of their QB's of choice are O fer in the Post season and you could argue the Chiefs are more talented right now.

The Falcons have probably been the more consistent, stable franchise (coaching decision).

The signing bonus we gave Routt is so nominal that you could cut him fairly easily after this year.

Getting Routt wasn't a bad idea in a vacuum, but we absolutely should've pursued Samuel if that's all it took to land him and if it meant carrying Routt as a Nickle for a year, so be it.

Wow, that was a steal for Atlanta. Of course, we gave up no draft picks for Routt.

Dimitriov (sp?) is quite the astute trader. Getting TG for a next year second was a brilliant steal from us as well. The jury is still out on the Julio Jones trade; but, so far it looks good for the Falcons.

There's a reason Samuel went for a 7th rounder: he sucks. That asshat cost the Patriots a Super Bowl. He can't tackle, and he's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is (which is the kiss of death for an athlete). I guarantee you he doesn't do jack shit for Atlanta.

JD10367

He's been a top 5 CB the past few years.

Uh, no.

In New England, his tackle numbers per year were: 34, 36, 54, 65, 44 (for an average of 46.6 tackles per season). INTs: 2, 1, 3, 10, 6. One good year. Solo tackles: 30, 34, 44, 60, 41 (average of 41.8).

In Philly, his tackle numbers per year were: 35, 40, 26, 34 (for an average of 33.7 per season). INTs: 4, 9, 7, 3. Two good years. Solo tackles: 31, 39, 22, 30 (average of 30.5).

So, looking at both tackle numbers, his performance has declined. He had one stellar INT year with New England, and two with Philly. Of course, the drawback to that is: if you have a lot of picks, it might be because they're throwing at you a lot because they don't think you're that good.

He was so "top 5" last season that I gave up hunting for his name on the NFL lists. Tackles, INTs, whatnot... he doesn't even show up. That's not Top 5. That's why they dumped his expensive ass for a 7th-rounder; it's pretty much Philly saying, "We'll give him away, just to get out from under his contract, because he's that useless when compared to what he makes." He never stops running his yap, he only cares about himself and money, and he's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. There's a reason why, up here in New England, we took to calling him A$$ante or Ass-ante.

According to Football Outsiders, Samuel was only thrown at 36 times the entire 2010 season. He had a “success rate” of 78%, which was by far and away the best in the NFL. For quick reference, FO defines “success rate” as “the percentage of passes that don’t manage to get at least 45 percent of needed yards on first down, 60 percent of needed yards on second down, or 100 percent of needed yards on third down.” That was the best in the NFL. Second best? A name you might know… Darrelle Revis, at 70%.

As far as yards per pass attempt, Samuel gave up a paltry 3.2 yards per pass, which again, was the best in the NFL. Second best? Another name you probably recognize… Antoine Winfield, with 4.2 yards per attempt. To put 3.2 yards per attempt in perspective. Aaron Rodgers averaged a ridiculous 9.25 yards per attempt this past year. That was the best in the league. The bottom 4 QB’s in the NFL were Curtis Painter (6.34), Sam Bradford (6.06), Colt McCoy (5.90), and Blaine Gabbert (5.36).

But the most amazing part of Samuel’s 2010 season was that despite only being thrown at 36 times, he somehow intercepted 7 passes. That’s incredible.

So, looking at both tackle numbers, his performance has declined.

I knew you were a fucking idiot, but judging a cornerback based on TACKLES?

Jesus Christ. No football opinion you present in the future will be given respect.

The answer to which question I asked? You sit at a keyboard 24/7 and whine and complain like a 12 year old girl about shit you absolutely have no detailed information about. Just because YOU want something to happen doesn't necessarily mean it's a realistic option at Arrowhead. KC isn't exactly a tourist attraction, it's in the middle of BFE, and the weather sucks ass. What do the Chiefs have to lure high profile players to KC other than money and the hope that relatives live in the area? And just because you're a Chief fan (sort of), doesn't mean that FA's grew up Chief fans.

Carr went to Dallas because he grew up a Cowboy fan and they were willing to pay him market value for his position. For the Chiefs to keep him, we would have to had offered MORE to lure him away from a better city to live in and away from his favorite team growing up. The same can be said for everybody else on the market. Unless we have a legit QB under center to go along with the defense and running game, money is the only thing we have to lure FA's here.

They got their asses handed to them each time. The one thing they have that we don't is QB. I'd take every position group we have over the same position group in ATL.

And that trade up for Julio Jones was a freaking disaster.

Losing by six points in 2008 is getting their asses handed to them?

Yes, we suck. But you can't say Atlanta is awesome simply because we suck. If you put Matt Ryan on our team he'd have at least one playoff win, maybe more.

So... What you're telling me is that the majority of FA's on the market are more interested in who the GM is rather than the city, climate, and money? Get a damn clue as to how the NFL works. First and foremost it's about "SHOW ME THE MONEY!", then the city the team is located, then the climate. The only thing KC has to offer is cash, because the climate and entertainment blow chunks.

Sure, it would have been great to sign Samuel rather than Routt. But, who's to say that AS didn't have a little pull in where he wanted to play. And was the current contract and compensation still on the table when Pioli signed Routt? One way or another, we got a fairly decent #2 corner AND a third round pick with what we have.

It's a great deal in terms of value.

He still wouldn't have replaced Carr here though. Samuel is a zone corner all the way. That's why they dumped him. Now the Eagles can put Rodgers-Cromartie and Asomugha on the outside and man press.

Sorter
04-25-2012, 09:53 PM
Another reasons they dumped AS is not only because he's a zone corner, but because him, DRC, and Namdi all struggled in the slot. They want to move Hanson back on the inside like he was 2 years ago.
