He's a DE in our system.

6-5 / 285

Practice squad, most likely.

Returning starter, who will need to step up and take a leadership role on an otherwise inexperienced defensive line ... Made huge improvements a year ago ... Has played in all but one contest the last three years as both a reserve and starter ... Pressed into extensive duty as a true freshman in 2008.

2010: Starter in 10 of 13 outings, including the last seven contests ... Midseason and postseason all-MWC third team by Phil Steele Magazine ... Career-high six tackles for loss and had 30 stops overall ... Started his first game since his freshman campaign, doing so at defensive tackle against Nicholls ... Had two stops, including one behind the line of scrimmage, in the win vs. the Colonels ... Tied for team lead with eight tackles at NMSU, highlighted by a sack for a seven-yard loss ... Two stops and a half TFL at No. 25 Missouri ... Two tackles for loss as a reserve in the win over Utah State ... Made a stop behind the line of scrimmage in the first four contests of 2010 ... Two tackles vs. BYU and Air Force ... Starter at New Mexico and Wyoming ... Had a tackle in 20 straight games, a streak that was stopped against Colorado State ... Blocked his first career field goal attempt against CSU ... Recovered his first career fumble in the end zone and added an assisted tackle at TCU ... Had four tackles against UNLV, including 1.5 for a loss and a half sack ... Made two stops vs. Navy.

Stock keeps rising for SDSU lineman

Jerome Long at SDSU
•2008: 37 tackles, one sack
•2009: 23 tackles, 1.5 sacks
•2010: 30 tackles, 1.5 sacks
•2011: 69 tackles, five sacks
•Career high: 13 tackles vs. TCU on Oct. 8

NEW ORLEANS — Jerome Long is pretty good at math.

It’s why he’s scheduled to graduate with a math degree next spring at San Diego State. It’s also why he wants to be a math teacher when he’s done playing football.

“It’s just easy for me to understand,” said Long, SDSU’s senior nose guard.

That’s the appeal: There’s no gray area. The answers to math problems are clear and fair, unlike other things in life.

Consider his upbringing. He grew up without a father, a person he never knew. His mom Julie raised him and his older sister, often moving around for work and support. By the time he reached eighth grade, he had lived in Riverside, Valencia, Alaska and Morro Bay.

Long called it “hard times.” But now it’s finally having a payoff – for him and the team he helped carry to just its fifth bowl appearance since 1969. Long will play his last college game Saturday in the New Orleans Bowl against Louisiana-Lafayette. After that, he is expected to play pro football – an opportunity that seemed unlikely even just a few months ago, let alone four years ago as a senior at Morro Bay High.

Back then, he only received one other scholarship offer to play college football – from Cal Poly. Now he’s 35 pounds bigger (285) and has twice as many tackles as last year (69). In July, he’s even getting married to a former athlete who pushes him to improve every day.

“She loves to compete,” Long said.

So does he.

“I’ve been told his NFL stock has gone up dramatically because of the way he’s played this year,” SDSU head coach Rocky Long said.

It’s sort of the story of his life: His stock keeps going up, in large part because of how he developed.

His roots go back to birthplace in Riverside, one of many cities he lived in but barely remembers. Moving around a lot in his youth forced him to be more adaptable to change and making friends.

Football seemed easy in comparison. And math seemed so much more uncomplicated.

“We didn’t have a lot of money,” Long said. “My mom was incredible. Especially in high school, I ate like a horse. Just that alone is pretty incredible how she managed to raise me and my sister.”

Growing up without a father, he instead found father figures to fill the void, including uncles and coaches. He became extremely coachable. He learned to listen -- – a quality that helps explain how he keeps improving in football despite having never played football before high school.

Add some extra playing time this year, and this is the result:

Jerome Long, a soft-spoken former heavyweight wrestler in high school, this year grew a beard, got engaged and peaked with plays such as this:

The game was at Army on Sept. 10. SDSU had a 23-20 lead, but the Black Knights were threatening to score and win. With less than 90 seconds left, Army faced third down-and-19 from the SDSU 34-yard line. The Army quarterback took the snap, drifted back and – bam, down he went. Jerome Long had burst through the line, sacking him for a loss of six yards to help seal the victory.

No other player at SDSU has made more solo tackles this year (47). Only senior linebacker Miles Burris has more tackles overall (72 to Long’s 69).

“On the field, he’s definitely got a motor,” Burris said. “Off the field, he’s a really nice guy, fun to be around and very involved in church.”

In one sense, Jerome Long’s production this year isn’t surprising. When a player’s playing time doubles from last year to this year, so should his number of big plays.

But in another sense, his breakthrough year caught even his coach off guard. In October, Rocky Long said Jerome might not be big enough to play the defensive line in the NFL at 6-foot-5, 285 pounds. Then he kept making so many plays that NFL scouts diverted some of their attention from quarterback Ryan Lindley and running back Ronnie Hillman.

Jerome is likely to get a chance with an NFL team next April, especially if he can add some more weight. After that, he’s getting married to former SDSU rower Kalynn Craig. The two were engaged last February, on Super Bowl Sunday, when Jerome got up in front of the congregation at All Peoples Church. He proposed. She said yes. The crowd cheered.

Now even that is helping him improve.

“She pushes him in everything he does,” SDSU senior defensive end Larry Gibbs said.

Rocky Long said Jerome has “improved dramatically” – a fact that perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising considering his background and makeup.

After so many previous challenges, it’s all finally adding up quite nicely.

2012 NFL Draft
Dennard is projected to be a second to fourth-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.[3][4] He was at one point considered one of the top cornerbacks of the draft, but has encountered a series of setbacks since, which has caused his draft projection to fall. In his final game as a Cornhusker Dennard was ejected for fighting with South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery.[5] He then experienced a lackluster Senior Bowl performance later that month.[3] On April 21, he allegedly punched a police officer outside a bar in Lincoln, Nebraska, and faces charges of third-degree felony assault.[6]

This is a pretty fair assessment of "Big Game" Hemingway:

Scouting Report
SCHEDULE & STATS

Share on google Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on email More Sharing Services 4

A thick, stout wide out who is a tough guy to bring down in the open field. Displays natural coordination as a receiver, plucks the football well off his frame and adjusts well to the throw. Is at his best with the ball in his hands. Lacks straight-line speed and isn't going to outpace anyone to daylight at the next level. However, he's shifty and possesses a strong, powerful base. Is routinely able to shake off tacklers, keep his legs churning and create through contact. Shrugs off defenders well down the field and while he isn't a legit vertical threat he is a tough guy to bang and will outmuscle defenders in order to adjust and go get the football at its highest point.

Doesn't have a great first step off the line. Is a bit slow accelerating into his route and isn't going to eat up the cushion quickly. Displays the footwork and short area quickness to cleanly re-direct on sharply breaking routes, but is still developing as a route runner. Exhibits a good feel vs. zone coverage, knows where to sit down underneath and is adept at working the middle of the field. However, has a tendency to consistently gear down before changing directions, is tighter in the hips and doesn't generate much explosion when trying to separate.

Will get after it in the run game. Possesses a willingness to block on the outside, a strong, compact frame and will win for you on contact.

Impression: Isn't a dynamic athlete, but possesses good strength and is tough to bring down after the catch. However, isn't anything more than a fringe roster guy at best at this stage and is limited in what he can offer an NFL offense. Isn't worth a draft pick in my mind.

IMO, the bolded line is why we like him.

How you like him, Kyle? You're the most familiar with him.I'm not the Kyle you were asking, but I like him. A lot. I did not expect another receiver, but he's somebody who I think could legitimately be a starter on the outside with a year or two of coaching. He has to work on his route running and (especially) his hands, but he could be a complete steal. It would not surprise me if he ended up being better in the NFL than he was in college. But it would also not surprise me if he's on the practice squad for two years and then cut. I'll take that gamble in the 7th.

checking back in

have to say, i'm pretty happy about day 3, this draft is not sexy, but they did check off the needs list

menzie comes from the best 3-4 in college, their secondary was incredible

Gray is just a great, smart pick in the 6th

even Hemingway is smart....take a flyer on a skill player

2012 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:
Junior Hemingway, WR, Michigan
Hemingway is a tenacious wide receiver prospect that needs to work on the finer details of football, whether it is route running or other fundamental issues. As a route runner, he runs hard, yet cannot stay crisp in his route. He has little to no explosion moving in and out of his cuts, which doesn't allow him to separate. Hemingway can beat defensive backs over the top with good speed.

Missed handful of games throughout his career and was granted a medical redshirt in 2008, which may signal red flags for coaches.

Hemingway has the size and strength to attack downfield. He elevates well and has enough body control to make the big play. Since Michigan hasn't played with a pro-style offense, Hemingway has limited experience running refined routes. The inverse of that issue is that he has a lot of work on blocking downfield and sealing the edge.

Ultimately, Hemingway is the type of player who will be drafted on Day 3, but has the potential to develop into a legitimate No. 2 receiver after what will amount to a "redshirt" rookie season.

How you like him, Kyle? You're the most familiar with him.

Hemingway is interesting. I have seen him make some amazing catches. He is a big, strong guy but not super fast. He is also a really good blocker.

IF he can pick up the playbook and NFL routes (BIG IF), then he is immediately our 4th best WR and a likely replacement for Breaston down the road.

It will add a whole other threat and dimension. Plus, if Boss can sneak out for some nice catches = the 2 TE threat that is catching on in the NFL. Cassel needs all the help he can get.

Giants draft:

I want Markus Kuhn, DT, NC State
sjnyfan : 5:48 pm
partially because if the Giants drafted a German the site would implode.

Kuhn is 25. He got a late start in football because you're not allowed to play in Germany until 15. Arms are on the short side but big hands, explosive at the snap, good first step, closing speed and strength, because hey--he's German.

9.5 TFLs this year and I like this quote from cbssports:

Quote:
Best fit would appear to be DT in 4-3 similar to NYG scheme where DTs are expected to push the pocket and bat down passes, areas where Kuhn excels.

Curious as to your thoughts on the weekend.

Personally, I'm very happy with our picks in 5 and 6, lukewarm on the Allen selection in R2, and pretty disappointed in the other picks.

To refresh now that we're done:

The Menzie pick is easily my favorite, followed closely by Gray, Allen and Hemingway - in that order.

Not at all a fan of our other picks.

I absolutely agree. I think he would be a legit 2nd/3rd round guy if he hadn't been stuck in that goofy offense and spent half his time looking back to see if Denard was running and he needed to block. At this point, it's hard to say if he will be able to adjust or not... but he is definitely worth the risk as a 7th rounder. As has been pointed out, he is worth it for his blocking ability alone.

As has been pointed out, he is worth it for his blocking ability alone.I think he has just about everything you'd want physically in a #2 receiver. He's maybe a shade on the short side, just under 6'1 IIRC, but he's physically a pretty big, strong guy (you'd think he's a running back looking at him), and while he's not a burner/can't shift into another gear, he's not as slow as his 40 times would make you think, either. And he's good after the catch. But the catch...there's his one big issue to me. He has to be more consistent there. Well, health could be a concern, too, although I'm not actually very worried about that.
