Listening to the new Killer Mike album, "R.A.P. Music."

Produced by El-P, which should be reason enough to give this a listen.

It's definitely going to be moving up toward my top of the year in rap.

I've been singing his praises for a while, but if you like shoegaze, you should check out Youth Lagoon. Parts of it really remind me of Galaxie 500. Really slow building stuff that moves from sparse, folky lofi to sweeping, lush shoegaze.

I just never wanted to return to it. I never found myself wanting to listen to it. It's very solid; the the best Beastie Boys album since Hello Nasty.

But in a year that was FULL of forward-thinking hip-hop, That BB album felt like a relic of the past. I always wanted to instead listen to innovative, fresh albums by G-Side, Danny Brown, Doomtree, Sims, Cities Aviv, Mr. Motherfucking eXquire, ASAP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, The Roots, Big KRIT, Cunninglynguists, & Das Racist.

This was pretty much my take as well. The Beastie Boys sounded as good as ever, but the album felt dated and not particularly exciting. That's not really a critique on the album itself, it's just that my musical listening style right now is to get caught up in the current milieu and the direction where things are heading, not to relive the past. I guess I'm saying I'm a trendy bastard.

And by the way: have you listened to the Killer Mike album yet?

That's probably my favorite track on the album. The whole thing bumps, though.

I just texted a fellow rap fan friend about this. He's pretty turned off by misogynism and shit, so I was worried he wouldn't make it through the first track to listen to the whole thing. The production on this album is sick (El-P) and right up my alley with its sometime weirdness. The real thing I like, though, is that almost every song has a sort of "shift" in it where it goes to the next level both with the vocals and the production.

"Untitled" at about 3:31 is a great example of this:

Giving the album a second listen right now. I like it and respect it. I don't know that I'll be reaching for it repeatedly for enjoyment, but I think it's interesting. Quite a bit of music I listen to these days falls into that category, though. Not a knock on those albums, more on the mood I'm in at any given time.

I haven't listened to most of their recent stuff but I did pick up her poetry books a few years back -- some demented stuff.
Fucking weird ass lady too, that Otep Shamaya.. We had backstage passes and went to visit with them after the show and she just locked herself in the bathroom screaming and crying the whole time.. I forget the bass players name "Evil something" - but he apologized for her behavior and said that the tour was tearing her apart.. We got his autograph and took a photo and that was that.

I know that there are a few metalcore fans here (don't judge me) -- the new Memphis May Fire album is available for stream. It's pretty good if you dig their previous work (though there really isn't much southern style anymore).

Picked up a couple more splits.

Hummingbird of Death/Titanarum split 12" - I was in it for the 2 songs from HoD but the beauty of a split is you get to experience the other band.

Backslider/Chainsaw To The Face spilt 7" - In it for the Backslider tracks, textbook Powerviolence.

I cannot get enough of this album. It is absolute perfection - best album of the year - nothing will touch this. The music, clean vocals, harsh vocals are simply perfect. Opeth who?

After that kind of build up I had to listen to this.
Uh, how do I put this? There must be different categories of best album of the year that nothing can touch with perfect vocals.

I suppose I should say progressive metal album of the year. I honestly meant to catch a few other posters with this band but if you can dig the music, that's great -- if not, sorry for misleading.

I like a lot of stuff like ACB.

My favorite band is August Burns Red. I really was into a lot of Emery, Showbread, and Project 86 too.

I've got a bunch of buddies who were into that sort of music and I just really enjoy it.

I'm so far behind on what actual "music genres" are. But, stuff like ACB and ABR -- I'm really into.

If you missed all the Frank Ocean hype (he confessed in a pretty moving blog post to having had an unrequited love for a good male friend) in the last week, then this performance might not be quite as "heavy." Anyway, this is the song with the lyric in it that led to the speculation, which led to him "coming out." For anyone who knows anything about the hiphop world, this is a big fucking deal as Frank is a lady's man who is part of Odd Future (they're like the JackAsses crew of hiphop right now), so it's a really strange deal.

All that being said, the performance stands on its own:

So every now and then, an album/song comes along and I say to myself, "This is going to be big," and I almost feel guilty for listening to it because I know that before long every Tom, Dick, and Harry is going to be listening to it, and I'll be completely burnt out on it (Gotye, Mumford and Suns, Fun.). Still, it's fun to be in on the ground floor. So this is your notice to get in on the ground floor.

It's funny, actually, because this guy gets no love in the local indie rap scene, but he's gotten quite a bit of hype on the national scene. Anyway, he's a pretty cool voice in rap. Tales from the ghetto that somehow remain positive and optimistic while still being gritty and true.

Some psychedelic world insanity. The band is Goat, and they're pretty interesting. Here's their (mostly bullshit?) backstory:
http://thequietus.com/articles/09798-goat-world-music-interview

As back stories go, it's an absolute corker. Goat are a mysterious band from the tiny village of Korpilombolo in northern Sweden. According to legend, Korpilombolo has a long history of voodoo worship, after a travelling witch doctor settled there several centuries ago. When Christian crusaders invaded and destroyed the village, the surviving townsfolk placed a curse on Korpilombolo as they fled. It's said that the effect of the curse is still felt today, and informs the highly rhythmic and trance-like music played by generations of villagers, which, in turn, has shaped Goat's extraordinary debut album, World Music.

From right here in KC, Vanlade.

Ironically, I was searching out the proper thread to ask the cool kids if I was supposed to be enjoying Fun as much as I have for so long. Their most recent SNL appearance has me mainlining the album all over again.

It's like Freddie Mercury and Paul Simon had a secret love child who actually founded the REAL Polyphonic Spree, and I find nothing wrong with any aspect of that scenario.

But I fear my inevitable descent into fogeyism

Then again, FTR, I don't give a shit what anyone thinks of my Mumford love. Folk with roots in the Emerald Isle has always had a centerplace in my heart

Fair enough. Based on your post, I'm listening to Fun.'s latest again (I wasn't terribly impressed with it the first time aside from their two hits) and it sounds pretty decent now to my fogeyish ears. I like your Freddie Mercury / Paul Simon comparison. I think it's changed the way I'm hearing it this time.

Now listening to the new James Blake album, which I've been waiting to do for a couple of days. Lots of the tracks were already leaked, so I knew what to expect. Still enjoying it. The blogosphere is abuzz with the upcoming release of Deafheaven's new album Sunbather. The titular track is embedded below. Entire album can be streamed at Pitchfork (http://pitchfork.com/advance/120-sunbather/). I confess, it's my kind of metal (does surprising things).

I was a fan of the late 80s shoegaze genre (Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, etc.). I'm reminded of those bands when I listen to Belong by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (http://grooveshark.com/#!/album/Belong/5260285). I hadn't heard of this band before hearing a song of theirs in a movie recently. A quick search shows that MoreLemonPledge had this album as his 15th best of 2011. Good choice, MLP.

Yup. Better than the leveler but not as good as Constellations... the horns still seem out of place.

So now that Deafheaven's album has been out a whole, I'll pose a question to the CP metal fans. Is it as good as the hype, or is the hype caused by the atypical image of Deafheaven (pink album art, cheery album and song titles) causing hype among fans who are not actually metal fans?

This thought crossed my mind after seeing "Sunbather" getting tons of votes for best song of the summer. I mean, if it were a typical metal album cover and title, I don't think people would be saying it was a "summer anthem."

Constellations would be so hard to beat.

But, the songs from R&R that I gave a whirl last night were really good.

Funny to see this as it went on sale yesterday morning. Only 100 were pressed to lime green, 30 wents to the bands and 70 were made available to the public. I was fortunate enough to grab one. Another pressing in standard black is planned for later in the year.

I dig it. It's a little more derivative than what I expected a new AF track to be. Lots of LCD Soundsystem with some Daft Punk thrown in. They're riding the electro pop wave as well, I guess.

Anyway, I'm a sucker for long songs, so I'm a fan.
