View Full Version : Science Annular solar eclipse tonight

DaFace

The path is a little limited, but there's an annular "ring of fire" solar eclipse this evening for those in the southwest corner of the country. You Kansas Citians will get to see a tiny bit of it, but the sun will likely set before you get much of it unfortunately.

Here's a map of the prime viewing area:

http://i.imgur.com/hj3GY.jpg

And here's a nifty "calculator" that will show you an animation of what it will likely look like in your area.

Not many people in the US have. Very rare.

I remember seeing a total ecclipse in elementary school, we used the paper or box method to view it....can't see this one here in WV.

Unfortunately, it's probably a little late to try and find a pair of eclipse glasses, which is the best way to view it. Normal sunglasses won't do the trick, though darker welding glass will if you know anyone who's a welder.

Google "pinhole eclipse viewer" for plans on how to make a gizmo that'll project it onto a piece of paper safely.

Other than that, you probably won't kill yourself if you glance at it for a split second, but don't screw around with staring at the sun unless you're the type of guy who enjoys gambling with your eyesight.

Frankly, if you REALLY want to get a good view of it, I'd head out to a watch party. This article mentions a few.

Dear Friends,

The New Moon and partial solar eclipse is Sunday May 20, at 5:48 PM Mountain Daylight Time. This is a very intense time that can bring breakage, conflict, change and potent fuel for your dreams and bids for power. Some of you may already be experiencing or witnessing increased accident activity, short tempers and things feeling a bit out of sync. This is highly charged solar energy and you can infuse your commitment with this solar energy, which represents the masculine. The quality is fiery and explosive and will be fueled by the winds of change. So use it well!

We recommend using this time wisely as anything that passes through your thoughts and feelings will be magnified. Watch what you think about, what you say and how you react. The magnetism of the eclipse will draw some big energy so be careful where you put your intentions. Stay away from known conflict and negative situations. We advise spending the time around the eclipse in positive thoughts and intentions and in a higher centered space filled with beauty, love and gratitude.

Needs to be entered into some sort of contest. Just a phenomenal pic - especially with a point-and-shoot. Did you do a lot of manual tweaking, or just snap the shot?

The camera I used is just above a point and shoot but not a SLR. I took a lot of shots using different shutter speeds and pieces of newspaper negatives as filters.
