is Penthouse forum considered Sci-Fi, Periodicals or Fantasy?

And I like them all except poetry.

On that list? Only Fantasy and Science Fiction. Although I will occasionally (rarely) read poetry. I don't enjoy literature, old or new, and non-fiction holds absolutely no interest for me. The only periodicals I currently receive are Writer's Digest and The Week.

Non-fiction, history, biographies.

Have not read a fiction book in twenty years to be honest with you all.

Classic Literature. I should read more contemporary. I'm sure I miss out on a ton of good books, but aside from some current short stories I don't read much contemporary.
I almost never read magazines, fantasy, sci-fi or poetry.

My wife, on the other hand, reads only non-fiction. Money books, health books, self-improvement, etc. That's it. She calls fiction, "stories".

Non-fiction, mostly. Specifically, true crime.

Although, right now I'm finally reading all the Harry Potter books. My wife has been bugging me for a decade to read them.

I read mostly fantasy. I used to read sci-fi but mostly have given that up. One of my pet peeves is when horror is called sci-fi.

I read it all. I don't read too much Sci-fi anymore, unless it's a Young Adult dystopian/cyberpunk type selection. I don't read poetry for fun, but I am required to study it pretty regularly as part of my job. I don't really find myself seeking out new poems, though. I go back to classic literature constantly and am reminded of why it's a classic (just discovered William Styron, holy shit). I also read a lot of periodicals, though most of my periodical viewing is more visual (Dwell, cooking rags, etc...). I also read a lot of non fiction when I'm feeling the need to get inspired on a personal level or learn about something.

But shit... I read the Planet, sadly, as much as anything.

Used to read all of those, but have really lost interest in sci-fi, fantasy & poetry the last several years... Tom Clancy, Stephen King, Rice, Koontz, whoever wrote the Dark Elf series, Jim Morrison, Khalil Gibran, whatever fiction... none of that interests me in the least anymore.

It seems the older i get the more i just want to use my reading time to understand real people, events, places, cultures etc.

My book tip for the day, an old favorite, Kon-Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl.

My favorite genre is probably historical military fiction. I'm a big fan of Steven Pressfield - Gates of Fire is one of my favorite books.

I also read historical non-fiction, along with some sci-fi and fantasy.

Check out 'One Very Hot Day' by David Halberstam, sold as fiction but its mostly true in the sense that its basically a mishmash of different experiences he actually had in vietnam as a journalist, with the names changed.

From what era?

I really liked his ancient world stuff, particularly Gates of Fire (about the Spartans and the Battle of Thermopylae, from the viewpoint of a Spartan slave). Also The Afghan Campaign (from the viewpoint of a foot soldier under Alexander) and Last of the Amazons. I like Jeff Shaara's stuff, too.

The only book I like better than Gates of Fire is the original Dune, and just barely.

From Wikipedia: Gates of Fire is on the Commandant of the Marine Corps' Reading list. It is taught at West Point and Annapolis and at the Marine Corps Basic School at Quantico at Virginia Military Institute and at Brophy College Preparatory.

I'm 47
and I only read comic books
not graphic novels
(not putting on airs here)
some are actually good
most are just mindless escapism
and that seems to be what I want right now

People don't read for entertainment much these days. Honestly, I don't as much as I used to. I'll go months without picking up a book. But I always get the urge back.

I like horror, fantasy, and the occasional non fiction that catches my interest. I'm a sucker for stuff like Bruce Campbell's "If Chins could Kill : Confessions of a B Movie Actor" Right in my wheelhouse.

I like real physical books though... don't know that I'll ever really get into e-books.

Historical non-fiction. I'm reading four (!) books right now - two on how societies developed from the 14th century until now, one on the history of the sword, and Ronald Reagan's autobiography.

Sci-fi/Fantasy/Historical Non-fiction...

The Technical stuff ought to be in there somewhere, but it's more of a professional obligation than a pleasure.

"Classic literature" + historical fiction and 'hard boiled' detective stuff. I used to read a lot of sci-fi & fantasy but they don't make much new stuff I like in those genres. But here's an old one I like:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/8651639/LSprague-de-Camp-Lest-Darkness-Fall

And since I'm sharing - here's a decent 'hard boiled detective' short story I've always liked. The opening paragraph is classic:

I cannot stand most of those classics. Things like A Tale of Two Cities and The Great Gatsby and all that. Too damn slow and boring. Maybe I'm just not cultured enough. I remember I tried to read Treasure Island a few years ago. Read 3 paragraphs and got rid of that shit!

All of those, but I don't read much contemporary fiction. I read a LOT of philosophy and theology as well.
