Gary Oldman Joining MGM's 'Robocop' Remake (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/gary-oldman-robocop-328774?)

Gary Oldman has inked a deal to star opposite Joel Kinnaman in MGM’s remake of Robocop.

Jose Padilha is directing the film, which is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman.

Kinnaman (The Killing) plays the title character, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer.

Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.

The production is eyeing a September shoot in Toronto and has a tentative release date of summer 2013.

The first Rated R movie that my dad let me watch. I LOVED that movie as a kid!~
I did re-watch it a couple months ago and I have to say as an adult that it had some really stupid parts. I'm not disappointed in a remake, as long as they make it dark and realistic. I'd like to see Christopher Nolan do it.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

I also got to wonder if this could be a "reimagining" of the story, even down to the Roboarmor/prosthesis to make it more battle plausible specifically the facevizor because I was always irked that his mouth and chin were exposed without any type of protection of armor or another blast proof material.

The Old Man was a sort-of ally in the first movie, but the villain in the second. I'm guessing they're going to combine - or at least blur the lines between - him and Dick Jones in this remake.

Can't wait to see who they cast as Clarence Boddicker. I wouldn't mind them signing Kurtwood Smith again, actually.

No Hugh Laurie For ‘Robocop’ Remake (http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/no-hugh-laurie-for-robocop-remake/)
By MIKE FLEMING Friday August 24, 2012 @ 9:46am PDT

Though he was expected to play the head of the facility that made the title character, Hugh Laurie is no longer going to star in the Robocop remake at MGM. The film, which stars Joel Kinnaman in the role originated by Peter Weller, is being directed by Jose Padilha and also stars Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, Abbie Cornish and Jay Baruchel. I’ve heard MGM is talking with a small group of actors to fill the role that Laurie was to play, including Clive Owen.

Michael Keaton Joins ‘Robocop’ Remake (http://www.deadline.com/2012/08/michael-keaton-joins-robocop-remake/)
By MIKE FLEMING Wednesday August 29, 2012 @ 3:31pm PDT

BREAKING: Michael Keaton has been set to play the role of Raymond Sellars in the MGM/Columbia Pictures’ RoboCop remake. Sellars is the CEO of the corporation that builds RoboCop, a role that Hugh Laurie was expected to play until he dropped out before consummating a deal. The film, a re-imagining of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven cult classic, is scheduled to begin shooting next month. RoboCop will be released on August 9, 2013.

Keaton joins previously announced Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish in the Jose Padilha-directed film.

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets,” said Padilha.

then the RoboCop suit is an actual suit/exoskeleton in comparison to the "full body prosthesis" like in the original. I'm still running with human swat suit until we see a more polished product. To me this could border on Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern bad if it isn't done right.

Nick Stahl sucked as John Conner. Whatever their reason for not having Furlong reprise his role, it sucked.

I checked Furlong's IMDB and Wikipedia pages. Didn't say anything about him being in jail at the time. But I assume him being a drugged-out fuckup probably played a roll in him not being recast one way or another.

Still, Stahl sucked.

Sony Pushes 'Robocop' to 2014, Moves 'Elysium' to Summer 2013 (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sony-pushes-robocop-2014-moves-379137)
by Pamela McClintock

Sony also dates "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" sequel and takes "Pixels" off the 2014 calendar.

Sony/TriStar is relocating Neill Blomkamp's Elysium -- the follow-up to the director's District 9 -- from March 1 to Aug. 9.

The sci-fi epic, set on a space station occupied by the very wealthy while the rest of humanity lives on a ravaged, overpopulated Earth, headlines Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley.

In its new summer home, Elysium opens on virtually the same weekend on which sleeper hit District 9 debuted in 2009 on its way to grossing $210 million worldwide.

Elysium takes the spot previously held by Robocop, which Sony and MGM are pushing back to Feb. 7, 2014. The remake, directed by Jose Padilha and starring Joel Kinnaman in the title role, is still in production, and the switch-up will allow more time for postproduction and visual effects, though that wasn't the reason for the move.

The studio also announced it will open Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 on Sept. 27, roughly the same weekend that 3D toon Hotel Transylvania opened this year, transforming into a box-office hit for Sony Pictures Animation. Transylvania has grossed north of $151 million to date.

Separately, Sony is taking Happy Madison's Pixels off the 2014 calendar. The CGI/live-action hybrid, the feature version of a French short about the invasion of New York City by an 8-bit video game, is still in development.

I don't know, I dig the new design of the suit, especially the visor. He seems to be killing alot of Robots in this trailer, I have a feeling that in order to keep the violence down they substitute gears for guts. Poor move in my book. It looks like Sam Jackson is a throwaway character, Gary Oldman will be Gary Oldman, and Michael Keaton needs to show me some Beetlejuice insanity to play up the bad guy.

Not related to Beetlejuice, but still one of my favorite Keaton moments.

Yea noticed that too. It also looks like he's more self aware and alive. In the original he was pretty much brain dead until he started having memories of his family.

I don't know, I'll give it a shot, but IMO, the original cant be topped. Perfect movie and the satire elements are hilarious and on point. Plus, ill bet they make it PG13. Ugh.......

This movie will suck. Why?

- It's a remake of an 80's classic, a subgenre Hollywood has not yet learned to avoid, despite overwhelming evidence that it should.
- Almost every character except Murphy is gone and replaced. Therefore . . .
- No Clarence Boddicker.
- Officer Lewis, the second most interesting character, has been gender-flopped.
- It's been in development hell for 8 years.
- It looks like they've replaced all humor with angst.
- He's lost all individuality, and now looks like another Batman clone, and finally . . .
- February release; the kiss of death.

I predict 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, tops.

I am torn, I like the odes to the original on the design, but they do seem to steal some scenes from batman, aka does it come in black.

We will see how it plays out, him being aware from the start and still having his family is fresh.

Hopefully it is R, the robots and and blood and violence together would be awesome.. Maybe get a robocop vs terminator cross over.

That's because it brings nothing really fresh to the story. It's the same tale, albeit watered down and not as viscerally satisfying, with a bunch of hamfisted Republican bashing. Whee!

Also, this. Nice try you fucking idiots.

The political resonances of the remake, by contrast—a half-hearted bid to achieve topicality by connecting the story to U.S. use of drones—is self-evidently contrived.

(The fact that drones aren’t robots and robots aren’t drones is a problem the film barely even tries to paper over.)
