Pro-Coal Group Pays People to Wear Its Shirts at EPA Hearing
-- Heather Moyer, Sierra Club

While watching all the tweets about today's Environmental Protection Agency public hearings in DC and Chicago on the agency's proposed carbon-pollution safeguards, we saw this tweet from the Environmental Law & Policy Center in Chicago (http://twitter.com/ELPCenter/status/205678545144516608):

http://sierraclub.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b96069e20168ebc25e8e970c-800wi

Hmm, is the coal industry astro-turfing again (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1009/28319.html)? The coal industry has to pay people to say they support coal?

A little Internet digging turned up the ad on Craigslist, only it had already been deleted. The best we could find for awhile was just this Google search showing part of the text (this is a screenshot):

http://sierraclub.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83451b96069e20168ebc25ff9970c-500wi

Here's the ad on Craigslist -- it's been deleted (http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/evg/3031150602.html). Using some Google search skills (thanks, Dave Stroup (http://twitter.com/davestroup)!) with those words, we were able to piece together this much of the ad:

People needed to attend a public meeting (Tinley Park /Chicago)

Reply to: px6mq-3031150602@gigs.craigslist.org (mailto:px6mq-3031150602@gigs.craigslist.org) (email address no longer valid)

Looking for people THIS THURSDAY, MAY 24 who want to make a couple of dollars for a few hours of your time.

All you need to do is wear a t-shirt in support of an energy project for two hours during the public meeting. We will be departing the Tinely Park convention center at 8:15 am for the meeting and we will be back by 1:30 pm. For your time we will pay you $50 cash and provide you lunch once we return to the convention center.

UPDATE -- Here are two photos of the pro-coal t-shirts at the Chicago hearing. Thanks to Lauren Kastner of Indiana University's Campus Beyond Coal group for these photos.

Here's one of our folks talking to a person in a pro-coal t-shirt at the Chicago rally:

Is it as humorous to you when the unions do it, or when the Dems bus voters in and pay them to vote? Just checkin'.

Open your fucking eyes, D. OWS is so manufactured, they have to take the bubble-wrap off their protesters before they roll them out into the streets.

Define the difference between grassroots and astroturf, if you don't mind.

Why?

We both know the difference. I'm just choosing not to turn a blind eye to what most all of these movements are -AstroTurf.

Why?

Because I am not convinced you know what either of those words mean.

It's hard to discuss nebulous concepts when you're not sure what the other person means.

I'm not exactly sure what you are waiting on. If you want a definition, you are more than welcome to look it up - or not.

How do you define astroturf vs. grassroots?

Half the OPs in the DC are from you. Have you considered taking a break from this crap and decompressing real-world style?

I'm really starting to wonder about ol' Ereckshun.

Remember about a month ago when he had a post in the Lounge that made it sound like he was polishing his handgun and occasionally sucking the gun oil off of it...and recently in here he sounds a little...well, desperate for want of a better term.

I think he's been perusing the latest polls a little too much recently, and is starting to feel Romney's steely grip tightening around his throat.

He will actually complete the act after the election losing his bet to me and will finally rest in peace. Just kidding of course:p
