View Full Version : Life How did you meet your significant other?

I have a vague feeling that I did this poll in the past, but can't find it. And who cares if I did?

The rules:

Answer this question for your current spouse or significant other if you have one. If you don't have a current one, answer it for your most recent past one. If you've never had one, there are poll options for you and you can use this poll to reconnoiter your options.

Let's see - we worked for the same company, went to the same church and went to the same college.

I'm pretty sure she was stalking me.

I went to a college reunion of sorts and at a party, the girlfriend of a buddy of mine discovered that I lived in the same area as one of her sorority sisters. This girl decided it was necessary after the fact to reach out and suggest that we meet. We did. 15 years and 3 kids later... it's all good.

We met at a party over at a friends house in Chicago. Truly, love at first sight. Which, at that time, was unusual for me, because I was REALLY into the one night stand gig.

The opposite of the QB gets girl story.

I was a routinely shitty football player. As a routinely shitty football player that also played a trumpet, I was in the band, but didn't have to actually do anything because they did marching band practice during football season and as a routinely shitty football player, I wouldn't have to actually be in marching band as I would be on the sidelines tying and re-tying my shoes during marching band performances.

She was a pom-pon girl. As a tall skinny chick that played the flute, she was also in band but also didn't have to do anything during marching band practice because she would be standing on the sidelines being tall and skinny during marching band performances.

So during marching band practice, we sat in the band room. I had a girlfriend at the time, so we were just friends. Oh, and she was 15, so there's that (fear not, I was only 16 at the time; but you don't date 15 year old girls when you have a car; not kosher). But the following spring we started dating. Now I'm old and can't even play softball without getting injured.

But hey - being a shitty football player allowed me to out-kick my coverage. While I can't bench 400 and run a 4.40; nor did I score 6 TDs in the state championship like the rest of CP, I do get to bang a pretty hot chick on account of what can kinda be considered athletic prowess -- afterall, I didn't get thrown off the team or anything.

I met my wife in the newsroom at the Columbia Missourian. She was a lowly news side copy editor, I was a respected designer/assistant sports editor.

Because of my lofty status, I technically was a Teaching Assistant for the copy editing class.

I first noticed my future wife while she was peering over some page proofs. My attention might or might not have been drawn by the peek I received at a plaid thong (depends on who's hearing the story).

We eventually made plans to hang out, which I broke to watch a baseball game at a bar, but she looked past the douchebaggery and gave me a second chance, and we began dating.

In completely unrelated news, she received an A in her copy editing class.

I came out as the ultimate winner when she decided to go to law school (which her father very kindly paid for).

I met my wife very briefly at a friend's birthday party. She caught my attention, but we didn't get to speak much. I later asked my friend if she was available, he said he wasn't sure, but I figured I'd take a shot regardless, so the next time I saw her I asked her out. All golden from that point on.

Met my fiance at work. I had always noticed her, but began to REALLY notice her when a co-worker told her to smile for me because as he put it, "doesn't she have a beautiful smile?" I of course said yes and thus began our pursuits of each other. How did I get her number you ask? I had a picture of one of our cats sitting like a person with glasses on looking like he was reading a book so I showed it to her, and as expected she wanted it sent to her phone.

We grew up together our families knew one another. I was home for the weekend, I was stationed at that time in Oklahoma City. She was coming over to see if my brother wanted to go see Alabama. I answered the door and I went instead. Whenever I was home we hung out. Then one thing led to another. Just ask her or me in person about night the Captain Morgan stuck...

Met my ex-wife in high school. We fought like hell and broke up several times even then. Got married when I was 20 and she was 18 - I was in the Navy, she was still in our hometown. Gee, who would have thought that would end in disaster? EVERYBODY BUT US. :banghead: Thank God we never had kids.

I should go from high school to high school telling kids not to marry their high school sweethearts.

We knew of each other when we were in high school because she was a wrestling cheerleader and I was a wrestler at a rival school. We met a year later at Perkins...she approached me (drunk) and told me she had a crush on me in high school and tried watching every one of my matches. We talked for a while at Perkins and I asked her to go night-fishing with me when we left, which she agreed. We dated for about a month until some dude told her about these 2-3 other girls I was dating whom I broke things off with after her and I decided to date each other exclusively. She thought (and still thinks) I was cheating on her, which I think is very, very debatable. She broke up with me, but we remained friends, but lost touch off and on as the years went by. 7 years later, we made plans to hang out again and haven't been away from each other since. We have been engaged for a few years now, but our marriage plans keep having to be replanned because we keep having babies because we hump like rabbits.

Sounds like her father is pointing the shotgun in the wrong direction.

Why? We are 29....and I wasn't cheating on her back then...just happened to be talking to (kinda dating) a couple other girls on the day I met her...which I stopped when we started dating exclusively.

Why?

I was referring to the end of your story. In the common mythology, pregnancy forces a marriage rather than prevents it, via the father's shotgun.

I had fell in lust with a cocktail waitress @ Jubitz Truck Stop in Portland, Or. She give it up & I fell in love with the snatch. 2 months later I was off the road living with her. That didn't last long. I ended up going back on the road & was in Jubitz again one night.

There she was, a big blue eyed girl. I thought she looked amazing & was feeling good enough to go tell her that. Instant connection & I actually asked her to marry me that night.

Been married since '94. She's a keeper. She's stuck with me when the divorce rate for paralyzed folks is staggering.

This was out at her parents' place on the 4th of July '99. 4 years later I got hurt.

So did she say yes that night, too? Or did you have to ask again later? Or was it just kind of an open invitation from that point on?

She said yes. We stayed up all night & talked about flying to Nevada. I never did ask her again. Believe it or not, she was a virgin. When we met she was 19 & I was 27. Back then it was a big deal, now not so much. She's always been a goody two shoes.

We tried hard to wait until we were married but she became pregnant so we went to Reno & got married one weekend. Several of her family members are from the Turlock, Ca. area so they flew over. I had no one there. All I kept hearing was, "chhkk, chhkk". The family unloaded them after I said "I do". I don't know how they were able to get them on the plane.

She lost that baby & we lost 3 more in 8 years of trying before we finally had our daughter in '01.
