View Full Version : News DC Comics' Green Lantern is now gay

One of DC Comics oldest heroes is super-coming out.

The original Green Lantern - a DC Comics mainstay for the past 70 years - will be revealed to be a gay man in next week's issue of "Earth 2."

Alan Scott - formerly a married father of two who first appeared in 1940 - tips readers off to his sexuality early on in the comic when he gives his boyfriend a welcome home kiss.

"He's very much the character he was. He's still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He's also gay," "Earth 2" writer James Robinson told The Post.

The Emerald Guardian's sexuality was rebooted along with the rest of his fictional universe as part of DC's "New 52" initiative aimed at rejuvenating their characters.

Robinson said he decided to make the change because making the character young again meant erasing Scott's gay superhero son out of existence.

"The only downside of his being young was we lose his son, Obsidian, who's gay. So I thought, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?'" Robinson recalled. "That was the seed that started it."

He ran his idea by the bosses at DC, "who signed off on it without hesitation."

There have been several humans who were "the Green Lantern". This is the character who was the golden age lantern (1940s-1950s). The most famous one is the silver age Lantern who is a totally different person, and there have been others more recent. They changed who was holding the office whenever they wanted to reboot the character. I'm sure it will sell a few issues and then they can change back if they wish.

I haven't read comics for decades but I loved Green Lantern as a kid. Not terribly impressed with the change, but I guess it will drive sales for a while.

According to the stories when I was a kid it was more like an office. This earth has one current lantern, and every other planet has one too, and when someone was killed or retired or whatever happened a new person was appointed. who knows if they changed it or this is an alternate universe that will be 'explained away' later though.

"The only downside of his being young was we lose his son, Obsidian, who's gay. So I thought, 'Why not make Alan Scott gay?'" Robinson recalled. "That was the seed that started it."

But that really doesn't make any sense at all. It indicates that the author simply feels the need to have someone gay in the comic, just for the sake of having someone gay. Oops, the story changed and we eliminated a gay side character. We need somebody else to be gay to even things out? Meh...

As it says, this is part of DC's "New 52" deal. They're rebooting their entire universe and trying to make it more current and edgier in order to garner new readers. I doubt it will work, but you can't blame them for trying to do something to boost their brand. I've never been a big DC fan (much more into Marvel), but I listened to a news story about it (the New 52, not the Gay Lantern) a month or so ago.

What would be sweet is to make Wolverine (or some other mutant with regen power) transgender wanting sexual reassignment surgery.

True dat. No different than token blacks, Asians etc. Token for token sake is wrong.

Token Asian in film: plays bit part in movie. Likely solves scientific/mathematic/medical problem.

Token Gay/Lesbian in film: has talents/abilities you don't expect. Goes through troubles but triumphs in the end.

Token Black in film: is dead 20 minutes in or the side-kick that doesn't play by the rules.

Token Latino in film: Always a supporting character unless female. If female she's unbelievably attractive, usually a $#itty movie, but you watch because she's in it.

Token French in film: no one cares. Fuck france. They make $3itty movies and contribute nothing to global culture.

Token German: Nazi. That's it. Nazi. The bane of all humanity, the personification of evil, the one truly agreed upon "bad guy" across all cultures.

What makes a character a "token" character? How does one go about having a gay/minority/whatever type character and not make them token or suffer accusations of it being a token character?

Aries Walker
06-02-2012, 10:27 AM
I don't think this has a problem with tokenism, it's just the first one they've introduced. In a cast as large as comic book universes, the first one will seem like a token, until you start seeing others walking around in the background, or as minor characters. Consider Marvel: Invisible Girl (now Woman) seemed like the Token Chick, until they added Marvel Girl, Wasp, Ms. Marvel, etc. Same with Black Panther being followed by Falcon, Luke Cage, and Storm, and most recently Northstar was the first out gay character, but he was followed by the much-lesser-known Rictor and Shatterstar, and I'm sure there will be more.

They can also add characters that are less strictly one or the other. Obviously that doesn't work too well with women, but they have mixed-race characters (most recently the new Nick Fury, who is half black and half white) and characters in various spots on the straight-bi-gay spectrum (I don't remember offhand who they are though). That all helps round it out in ways that most movie or TV casts - who are usually less than 10 main characters - can't.

Character development, plot, writing can all make a gay person an integral part of the cast without shoving the lifestyle down our collective throat. I realize that I'm a white guy and I don't think every show needs my stamp of approval to be funny and successful. But there are a lot of shows who insert a gay guy just for the sake of being trendy. It bothers me just as much as the trend of sitcoms containing a smoking hot wife and fat dumpy husband. You know how many of those we had in the last decade?
