Ricky Stanzi could be rising up the ranks (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/06/02/ricky-stanzi-could-be-rising-up-the-ranks/)

Ricky Stanzi AP

In March, the Chiefs pursued flirted played tonsil hockey with evaluated quarterback Peyton Manning. Eventually, the Chiefs added former Browns and Broncos quarterback Brady Quinn.

Quinn’s knowledge of new coordinator Brian Daboll’s offense prompted speculation that the former first-rounder may have a chance to unseat Matt Cassel. As it turns out, Cassel should perhaps be more concerned about Ricky Stanzi.

According to Nick Toney of KCChiefs.com, Stanzi supplanted Quinn this week (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/OTA-Notebook-Chiefs-finish-second-week-of-OTA-practices/97acb0be-734b-4418-a8e6-b81467039211) as the second-team quarterback during Organized Team Activities.

Coach Romeo Crennel wasn’t asked about the backup-quarterback battle during a post-practice media availability on Friday. But it’s no secret that the Chiefs like Stanzi. A fifth-round pick in 2011, Stanzi played at Iowa for Kirk Ferentz, who has a strong relationship with Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli.

Last month, Pioli defended the decision not to draft a signal-called in 2012 by explaining that the team has “three good quarterbacks.”

Quinn and Stanzi presumably will battle it out during training camp for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. At least Quinn won’t have to worry about billboards or other fan-driven efforts that would make Stanzi the first man off the bench even if Quinn wins the fight, fairly and squarely.

Maybe they are. Whoever wins this battle could/should give Cassel fits once they get some snaps with the #1's.

Stanzi didn't supplant him.

The plan is to rotate practice weeks with the 2s for Quinn and Stanzi.

Its all a ruse, they will never get real reps with the one "because" they were too busy fighting over who will hold the clipboard. There is no threat to that turd launcher.

Health.

If Casshole goes down and Stanzi lights it up Pioli still wins, he drafted him. He can say it's Brady part II.

If Brady Quinn comes in and lights it up he signed the guy. He and Romeo saw what no one else did.

folks, don't do this to yourselves. I'm a stanzi fan too, but I believe stanzi will need one more season before he even gets a crack at #2. my hope is, he also gets a crack at #1 next year, but this will be mostly up to stanzi -- he needs to really show the staff he's capable first and that has to start with showing he can be #2.

Stop stepping on our dreams. Cassel is a proven fail. Despite some claims otherwise on this site, I believe Quinn is also a proven fail and not doing anything in OTAs so far to change that opinion. Stanzi, as improbable as it may seem that a 5th round QB should be considered the future of the franchise, is our only hope.

The only way Stanzi ever gets in a regular season game with Cassel still on this team and Pioli around is if Matt gets hurt.

Other than that, I bet Pioli trades Stanzi as his stock/possibility of him causing a QB issue with his beloved Matt rises.

What is your ****ing point?

His point is that Pioli drafted Stanzi late, therefore if he starts and does great things, he gets the credit for finding a rare late round QB gem as he did with Brady (and some people will say Cassel who was drafted in the 7th. NOT ME, but some people). If Stanzi succeeds, finding late round gem QBs will be a large part of what defines him as a GM...as being one of the few that has the ability to do that. Basically, if Stanzi succeeds, Pioli's ego will be fed similarly to how it was presumably fed with the success of Tom Brady and how it is presumably fed when he "encounters people on the street all the time who tell him how much they like Cassel" (as so he claims).

Sounds like Daniels made a great play on the ball and had "the play of the day"

So far, they have reported at least 6 tds thrown by Stanzi and this is the first pick. I'll take that all day.

That's what I was telling myself too, and then I realized how disappointed I'm going to be when Stanzi doesn't even get the 2nd string spot. Not for any lack of ability, but because Pioli likes to watch us squirm.

Riiiiight. Think he threw a pick today too.

I don't know if Stanzi will ever amount to anything but what made me like him was when he went up to Haley and was bugging him to put him in for the struggling Palko vs. the Steelers.

Stanzi throws his first reported pick and all of a sudden Quinn who has reportedly thrown as many INT's as TD's or worse will be our #2?

I know aturnis, I know. People will go to their graves since they dug it by trying to even validate Quinn even though he's nothing more than a cheap 3rd QB on the roster.

They are rotating weeks with the 2s.

Neither guy is the cemented 2 or 3 right now.

That never happened unless it was when I left to get another beer or something.

I remember Stanzi going up to Haley when Palko was sucking and Haley brushing him off, but NOTHING like what you just described.

Stanzi, Quinn ready to compete for job as Chiefs’ No. 2 QB

By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

Ricky Stanzi was drafted by the Chiefs last year, but he said there are times when he still feels like a rookie. This is his first time with the luxury of participating in the team’s offseason program, having lost the experience to the NFL lockout last season.

Brady Quinn is the veteran among the Chiefs’ reserve quarterbacks but indicated there are times when he feels like a rookie again. He signed as a free agent with the Chiefs in March and acknowledged that occasional new-team feeling.

The Chiefs need one of them to age soon. They’ll have to make a decision on Matt Cassel’s top backup before the Sept. 9 season opener against Atlanta at Arrowhead Stadium.

Coach Romeo Crennel said recently Quinn was ahead of Stanzi, not surprising given Quinn is more experienced and once played in Cleveland for Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

But it hasn’t all been smooth for Quinn, a first-round draft pick by the Browns in 2007 when Crennel was their head coach. Quinn hasn’t taken a snap in an NFL game since 2009.

“Any time you have to go and learn a new system, that can be an adjustment for you on top of having to learn new personnel,” Quinn said. “Fortunately for me, I have some familiarity with the offense being that I was with Brian in 2009. That’s helped out a lot.

“I’m just trying to get a lot of work in and trying to get the fundamentals down right now. I’m trying to get adjusted to some of the different wide receivers I’m on the field with. Everybody is still new to me and I’m still trying to get used to how they get in and out of cuts, their body language, things like that.”

Quinn and Stanzi are rotating by practice session as the No. 2 quarterback. Monday was Quinn’s turn, with Stanzi finishing each drill as the No. 3 passer.

Neither was particularly sharp. Both threw an interception — Quinn to rookie safety Tysyn Hartman, and Stanzi to veteran Travis Daniels.

Their battle won’t become intense until training camp begins next month in St. Joseph. Stanzi said he will be better able to compete for a job than he was last year, when he arrived at camp after the lockout ended and without the benefit of the spring practice that he’s getting now.

“You have to feel more comfortable now than last year, just having the offseason,” Stanzi said. “It was tough to come in at any rookie position and to have to go right into camp.

“It was nice to have this offseason to get onto the playbook and look at all the formations and different things that are special to this offense and then to just go out there and get (snaps) before actual training camp. That simple combination makes a huge difference, when you’re able to go out there and play things out and get a feel for what the offense is mentally before you go out there and do it physically.

“It definitely feels more like a rookie year should feel. You’re just more aware and you know more people on the team with this being the second year. Not having the offseason last year was just a different thing you had to adjust to.”

Stanzi was the third quarterback for much of the season before becoming the primary backup to Kyle Orton late in the season. In either case, Stanzi didn’t play in a game, so it could take him some time in the preseason to get used to game speed again.

“Maybe a little bit, but you just have to adjust,” Stanzi said. “It will be something minor if you make it minor in your head. It can be something big if you make it big. You just have to keep in focus what you’re trying to accomplish.”
