Talks between NFL and officials for new deal have broken off. NFL has advised all teams it is now working to hire replacement officials.

NFL looking to hire officials from anywhere but BCS: Elite retired college officials, ones from small college conferences, even Arena ball.

Install replacement officials with a better replay system (like college), and things will be better.

Could they be any worse than the real officials?

Fine by me. Last time we went through this I didn’t see much if any drop off in officiating.

Doesn't bother me one bit. Wouldn't mind seeing some younger officials, which I'm hoping/assuming these replacements will be.

Does this have anything to do with the NFL announcing that they plan to make some officials "full-time"? I remember reading that they intended to do that.

Hopefully the MLB can have this problem as well, because the umpires have sucked something fierce this season so far.

Precisely:thumb: Hopefully Goodell will pull a "Reagan". Remember when Reagan told the 'air traffic controllers' get back to work or be fired? They thought Reagan was just posturing(bluffing) and didn't think they could be replaced:rolleyes: Well................

In all reality though, this won't happen because this is just posturing for a better deal which is standard in bargaining. Economy is tough and most of these officials who have other jobs surely won't risk too much there revenue stream coming in.

i imagine that is a gigantic sticking point on the negotiations.

once the officials go full time it changes the entire dynamic of the situation. I'm sure the NFL really doesn't want that.

I think the refs in the NFL do a very good job for the most part. The NBA refs are the ones that should be replaced.

Goodell doesn’t seem concerned about replacement refs
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 1, 2012, 1:42 PM EDT

With the NFL and its officials at a standstill in negotiations on a new contract, and with the league poised to begin the preseason using replacement officials, Commissioner Roger Goodell doesn’t seem particularly concerned about the matter.

“We had discussions recently,” Goodell said at a visit to Packers camp, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Hopefully, we’ll have more in the near future. But as you can see we’re preparing for the season and we will [have] officials on the field. We hope our officials from last season will be on the field this season.”

At the moment, it doesn’t appear that they will be the same officials from last season. Instead, the NFL is training a couple hundred replacement officials, most of whom have no experience at the NFL level or even at the highest levels of college football. Goodell acknowledged the concerns about player safety if novice officials aren’t properly enforcing the rules designed to keep players safe, but he said that wasn’t a problem the last time the NFL used replacements.

“That’s why we’ve been training them for the last two months,” he said. “We had this experience in 2002 [editor's note: It was actually 2001] and the big impact in 2002 was you didn’t get the holding calls and some of the other calls. Safety is such a focus for us. They’ve been training on that basis.”

Goodell said the proposal the NFL has made to the officials is fair. The officials don’t agree. Which means there’s a good chance those replacement officials will still be in place when the games start to count for real.

I mentioned this in the "Get ready for female officials" thread, but I remember the replacement officials in 2001 being horrible. I also recall that the NFL and officials compromised right after 9-11.

Stop with the victim bullshit. Every good pass rusher gets held you don't think the refs could call holding every time DeMarcus Ware rushes the passer?

Are you really fucking naive enough to believe there's not a pattern to it?

I've said it before - go back and watch the Chiefs/Packers game from last year. Two blatant, obvious holds, both of which happened directly in front of an official, which weren't called. These two plays directly resulted in 10 Green Bay points.

It's one thing to be held in a manner that is technically violates the written rule.

It's an entirely different thing when the player is in a headlock, tackled from behind, or face masked,..

Weren't you implying earlier how Hali always gets held because he plays for a small midwestern market then went onto use an example against the Green Bay Packers who are also a small midwestern market?

Let them sit at home and watch the fucking games on TV. Works for me.

They should have one official for each camera feed and ONE guy on the field with a headset to blow the whistle and announce the penalties. It's totally fucking ignorant that 100 million people watching at home have a better handle on penalties than the assholes on the field.

More often then not I have a hard time identifying what is considered a penalty. I think "oh man, that's a hold".....no call. Or "great defense on that pass play"....PI.

The Mayor

The networks rarely if ever show replays of holding penalties. That fucking pisses me off. Charles runs for 25 yards and a first down.... Flag. Holding. No replay. Cassel throws for 4 yards on 3rd and 22. Punt.

When I first got DVR I started watching all penalties. I had to stop because I was no longer enjoying the game. I have no fucking idea what they are seeing when they call holding.

To properly identify a hold, watch whoever tries to block Tamba. 10 out of 10 times- this is a hold.
