View Full Version : Chiefs What Does Matt Cassel Do That's Good?

Trying to install some objectivity into Chiefsplanet but i'm sure this will turn into a bash Cassel thread.

4 seasons as a starting QB 2 were pretty solid years. He's a better QB than Palko, Thigpen, Croyle etc. So what is it that he does good?

Umm.....serious question, right?

Okay, just let me think a bit. I guess he's good at taking hits? Since he's usually always getting killed back there, a lot of it being his fault. Hell, guess not even that's "good". Oh well, all I got.

The truth is, when he sets his feet and gets the ball out with no pressure, he can be a very accurate passer in the short to intermediate game.

This is why Josh McDaniels increased the number of plays from the shotgun when he had to work with Cassel.

True - I remember being surprised every so often when he would step into a throw. He hasn't got a rocket arm, but when he has a bunch of time and space, he can still throw the ball with some zip.

I remember him being pretty good when they rolled him out too. Which is weird considering that takes away half of the field.

I'm not defending the guy or even saying he's a good QB but at times he did atleast look like an NFL QB in 2 of those seasons.

He's a solid scrambler when protection breaks down.

Not really.

Most of the plays he makes with his feet are the result of scrambling before the scramble was actually necessary.

Cassel sees or feels pressure before it actually exists.

I'd say this. Problem is, he often creates his own pressure in the pocket.

Toughness. The guy had his appendix ripped and was on the field less than 2 weeks later and took several hits and always got back up.

Good teammate. He seems to have the respect of those around him and doesn't show up his teammates when they screw up.

Good citizen. Classy move with Joplin, and I know there are other things he's done that probably go unnoticed.

Humble. This goes along with good citizen, but he seems to handle his position and wealth with humility.

That's true for a lot of limited QBs.

Since he's slow on progressions, and can't make reads, by rolling out and eliminating half the field, you limit his decisions, and make things simpler.

He's a solid scrambler in the sense that he has the ability to move his feet fast enough to escape defenders.

He's a shitty scrambler in the sense that it usually doesn't benefit the team.

The playoff drought is what it is. And Cassel is just as responsible for playoff losses as those other guys. But to be completely incapable of beating ANY good teams in the regular season (except for a 7-9 Seattle team). That's just fucking embarrassing.

From 70 yards and 3 picks in the only playoff game he has been in, to hitting the crossbar on a 35 yard hail Mary, to missing his own head with his hat...it's really hard to come up with ANYTHING he truly does well.

Going into his 4th year starting in KC and with the crazy amount of talent we have on this roster, this team SHOULD be a superbowl contender if Cassel plays like he did in the middle of 2010.

Seriously.

During that stretch, he was stepping up in the pocket and delivering strikes that hit his receivers in stride.

This team has far better weapons than 2010, too.

Baldwin - full offseason healthy and first without the lockout. Last year at this time, Baldwin was staying at Cassels house...they should have some chemistry. No homo

Breaston - Reliable target that knows how to get open and has some speed.

Hillis - a really good receiver out of the backfield and above average blocker. Also, a battering ram that wears a defense down over the course of the game.

Winston - pro bowl quality player replacing a bottom of the barrel RT.

Hudson - Casey was good, but he starts the year at 285 and by years end he
had dropped to 275 or less. That got us beat in pass protection right up the middle quite a bit. Hudson should be a bigger version of Casey for us.

Charles being back.

The defense should be able to be high on the list of forced turnovers and scoring.

The pieces are in place for Matt to have a breakout year.

If he does, this team would be hard to beat.

It's like when people hate on Psicosis/Ultra Peanut. She posts some of the funniest stuff on this board. Maybe if you weren't such a sourpuss you wouldn't get so annoyed.

SportsRacer is hilarious.

Also, Matt Cassel is not humble (as someone said before). His statement about being level with Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning proved that. Being spoon-fed the starting spot for three years (nay, four) probably doesn't help his hubris.

Peyton Manning.

If he could tear an ACL in a pre season game and be out for the year, I believe I could count that.

Yea but our luck it would just give Pioli another excuse to try him again in 2013. fuck. Death is the sure bet to get rid of him.

Dear God please inflict Aidsfire to Mr. Matt Cassel or have him drink some anti-freeze. Is that too much to ask?

Cassel has more TDs than INTs in just 4 of last 11 games. He's exceeded 261 pass yds twice in last 27 starts. (Vs 2011 Colts, 2010 Broncos)

Tweet him the 3:16 stat and the 1-8 record against playoff teams (only win against 7-9 seahawks)

It's a process.

It's not progress, but it's definitely a process...
