What happened in Kansas City?

“Todd Haley. That’s a whole ‘nother conversation. He’s one of those head coaches that doesn’t respond to his players. That’s why he got fired. When he left there it was like a big breath. He kind of crushed my career a bit, trying to put other guys in, not really relying on his veterans.”

“They even gave me a three-year contract (before 2011). Obviously Scott Pioli, he ain’t gonna miss on nobody. I felt real good in that situation, (Haley) just never gave me the opportunity to break out, I got one or two attempts a game, I can’t really do too much. And it just got ugly from there. We didn’t have a good relationship, and he sat me down for no reason for the (January 2011) playoff game. I’m the one with the most playoff experience on the team, and you take me out? So me sitting down that day sent a bad message to our team – totally negative, one of your veteran leaders didn’t play in the playoff game, and we lost. We got our butts kicked, and I was ready to get out of there.”

Somebody should put together an oral history of the Pioli era Chiefs.

Or, it may have something to do with Chambers dropping wide open passes on third down to kill drives...I distinctly remember some of that happening as well.

Interdasting that a player feels that way.

At the risk of sounding like I'm defending Haley (I'm not), this great veteran leader managed 22 catches for 213 yards that year. So I'm guessing we didn't lose the playoff game because he wasn't on the field.

The brilliance of Todd Haley. Benching your #2 WR for the playoffs and replacing him a guy off the street 3 days before the game. Worked wonders.

Chambers' star flashed so quickly that it's hard to remember. He showed up and did great and we were all excited about him, and then (crickets chirping).

We were playing Verran Tucker at the 2 for a lot of weeks. Surely he or Chambers would have been better than Kevin fucking Curtis.

Haley was a moron, no doubt.

Not to take Haley's side by any means ... He made his own bed here in Kansas City .... but, really benching and not using Chris Chambers isn't one of the mistakes that stands out.

I guess I would have more sympathy for Chambers if he caught the ball on the opportunities he did receive.

Haley was an ass, a poor play caller and I'm glad he's gone, but I believe it took that kind of personality the first two years to change the character of the team. So I say, thank you Haley and shutup Chambers.

This the whole thing.

I agree that Haley was what was needed at the time and that this team is mature enough for a softer coach like RAC. Haley came in and played his role just like Herm did.

I can't honestly criticize any coach that has Matt Cassel as his QB.

The SAME Todd Haley that allowed Chambers to make 16 starts in just 22 games as a Chief?

I'd go as far to say it was insightful by Haley to bench Chambers. Chambers obviously was not the same player after he got the contract and dropping the ball consistently does not endear a coach or the fans.

If this kind of Haley criticism came from Larry Fitzgerald then this would mean something. Otherwise its just a WR at the end of his career who is bitter and angry. Obviously Haley had his problems but not giving playing time to Chambers was not one of them.

Article from a few years ago:

The official NFL league stats came out evaluating all WRs. As you know, Haley wants wide receivers who have great hands and can block. He had one in Chambers, but now is letting let him slip through his fingers.

They rated the top 107 wide receivers in football. Chris Chambers ranked fifth for best hands in the NFL. Top 5. Chambers had only one dropped pass all season.

His percentage of passes caught vs. dropped even surpassed players like Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, who were also in the top 10, but finished behind Chambers in the rankings.

The other receivers were a different story. Mark Bradley was #106 in drop pass percentage. That was second only to Darius Heyward-Bey who now owns the title as the worst hands in the NFL. Nice job Al Davis.

Bobby Wade was at #97 and Dwayne Bowe #95. They, like Bradley, were among the worst in the NFL and combined for well over 20 drops. Devard Darling was just cut, but had he played, he would have ranked just as low.

So what's the deal here?

Maybe Pioli should have used the tag on Curtis.

Todd Haley is a cocksucker and I firmly believe he sabotaged our playoff hopes by continuing to play Palko. We could have had it....
