Beltway traffic in Washington, D.C., is bad enough without adding extraterrestrial vehicles into the mix.

On Wednesday night, Facebook and Twitter users went wild over sightings of a saucer-shaped vessel being towed on local highways. The buzz called to mind the frenzy in 1947 Roswell, albeit in a much more modern way.

Drivers spotted the craft on I-270 and on the Beltway as it was pulled behind a tractor trailer.

But we can take the "unidentified" out of "unidentified flying object." (And yes, we realize that it wasn't actually flying, either.) The military has confirmed to NBC News affiliate News4 that the 82-foot-long craft is an unmanned military aircraft, known as an X-47B.

Maryland State Police towed it on a flatbed trailer from Garrett County, Md., to Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
The drone had come all the way from California -- and yes, it "always attracts attention," a military spokesperson told NBC4's Melissa Mollet.

The craft is the second of its kind to come to the area. An X-47B arrived in late 2011 -- although if they towed that one on the Beltway, no one must have noticed.

Poll: Americans OK with some domestic drones

"In the coming months, you can expect to see the X-47B flying over the base and surrounding area along the Chesapeake Bay," said Matt Funk, lead test engineer.
According to a military press release:

The X-47B is the first unmanned vehicle designed to take off and land on an aircraft carrier. As part of the program's demonstration, the X-47B will perform arrested landings and catapult launches at Pax to validate its ability to conduct precision approaches to the carrier. The base is one of only a few sites in the world where the Navy can run performance tests on aircraft-carrier catapult operations at a land-based facility with flight test and engineering support resources not available on a ship.

Although Maryland State Police helped orchestrate the the drone's Wednesday night commute, even they didn't know what it was at the time, police told News4.

"Don't worry, that's not an alien spacecraft, just a flying military robot. [That was a] totally normal sentence in 2012. I love the future," Ben Jacobs tweeted

It isn't an alien craft. they just used an alien craft to design it.

I always figured UFO's were just secret Military craft, this just confirms it. Im curious as to why they'd send this thing truck freight across the country though. Seems odd that they'd do that. Guess they don't care about keeping it a secret anymore?

The military would not do this on accident. They are trying to do or suggest something. And if UFOs were secret projects why would they be in the middle of a highway uncovered. This is just a strange story.

They're moving it cross country like this because they don't trust it enough to fly it yet. Also, they want the bad guys to know that we will have drones patrolling our skies. It's a deterrent.

Still seems odd. When has the military ever been known to show their hand on un-finished projects?

Especially something like this. It's a freaking flying saucer. I'm really curious to know how it moves, takes off etc.

It's not REALLY a flying saucer....just disassembled. Bleh. Well that's boring now, haha.

Right off hand they only do it when the craft is going to be put in use in situations where either they can't hide the operation, or some point is served by publicizing it. The Blackbird was rolled out when it was being retired. The stealth fighters/bombers were rolled out when they were put into heavy use against Iraq.

Now there have been stories about drones over American soil for a while. I think they want the bad guys to know that they are out there. From the shape I'd say that they are stealthy. That makes sense. You don't want everyone to know exactly where they are when in use. But you do want the bad guys to have to worry about them. I'd say it's a good decision to sort of flaunt them around and let the media hype them up a bit. I'd say this a calculated move.

It doesn't really look like a saucer...the photo was taken from an angle that belied its true shape.

I wonder if parts of the wing were removed for transport? Still, as you said, the angle of the pics make it look more like a saucer shape than it really is.

Yeah, the OP is very misleading. A quick google search shows that this thing has been around for awhile and there is really nothing "Saucer" about it.

Could be...Just like a lot of the manned fighters can fold their wings up to fit on the flight deck elevators of carriers.

Believe in UFOs? What does that even mean? Of course everyone believes in UFOs because UFO means UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT and there are clearly objects that fly and are not identified by the viewer.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. That was a quote from the article. But as such, although we all know what the acronym UFO stands for we all accept the connotations as extra terrestrial.
