Yadier hit a ball that was a sure hit between SS and 3B. Escobar laid out for it about 5 feet into the outfield, stopped it, picked it up off the ground and threw a bullet to first that bounced well short of the bag and Hosmer made a great pick.

Interesting, because I was at the game, and heard a LOT of, "holy shit, that was a hell of a play."

I've attended numerous Cards/Royals games in StL, dressed in Royals gear. I don't know where people come off believing the majority of Cards fans have some high & mighty attitude. I've always found the StL crowds to have a great understanding and respect for the game, and asides from one or two bad apples (which every crowd has), I've been treated well.

Like you just confirmed, I figured the general feeling amongst fans after Escobar's play was "Wow, great stop and throw"

Look, it's not that I don't understand why Royals fans celebrate that victory every ****ing time the Royals plays the Cardinals.

But it's so annoying to hear"1985. 1985. 1985." Over and over again. And every ****ing time I am in KC, I get flipped shit for it.

In their defense, I'm the one that mentioned the World Series (although not that particular one) first.

Like I said there's only one small market team that has won... what... like 27 WS? Only second to the Yankees is StL. I have much respect for the Cardinals. Doesn't mean I have to like them any more than NY.

I celebrate small victorys because since '85 that's what my team has but I'll never stop being a Royals fan, win or lose. That's my team through thick and thin.

You can console yourself with the second most titles ever. We have '85. Excuse us for clinging to it.

I would say the Royals are the most successful franchise from the '69 expansion considering the Padres nor the Expos/Nats or the Rangers/Senators have won a WS.

Yeah, it stinks that the Royals haven't made the POs since '85, but their time will come, just as there will be a time when the Yankees will have a long playoff drought.

Kudos to you for sticking with the Royals through the rough times.

I wouldn't say St. Louis is small market, though. It's more of a medium sized market. The city itself isn't huge, but the metropolitan area is.

St. Louis metro is about 2.8 million, KC is about 2 million.

The real advantage for them though is they were the only baseball team for middle America for decades... with a ton of success and a huge radio station in KMOX blasting across the country when AM radio was a big deal. You have families that have been Cards fans for generations because of that.

I think another reason why STL can succeed as a small market much more than the Royals is because their fanbase is far more loyal than the Royals. Granted the Royals are doing well in attendance right now because of the excitement for this young team, but I remember in the mid to late 90s when I worked there as a vendor that the attendance numbers were embarrassing. Has STL ever had those issues? Also STL has the history of professional baseball that we can't match. Granted KC had the A's, but they did not last long. Just my opinions though.

That's all true. StL has the record of success and the history. We have the 70's and 80's. StL doesn't run like small market even though they are. KC wants to be that so people like me cling to these small victorys like tonight and hope the good times return.

Exactly. What I think happened is that Mr. Kauffman died (and I remember as a kid trick or treating at his house every year and getting Royals gear). He had this team built to be a winner and the city supported the team. This is why they were the model expansion franchise for a long time. Then after his death, the team fell on hard times and many fans left. They became so bad for so long that the next generation of fans do not remember the glory days (I barely remember the 85 series) so it is hard for them to support a team that has become the joke of baseball.

This team has a chance to turn the corner now. It will take a commitment from all sides to make this happen. The fans need to sell out games which will make Glass more money. He in turn needs to take this extra money and spend it on this team to lock up our talent long term. This team can't go all Yankees and buy up the top FA's every year (and indications are starting to look like some of the big spenders like the Yankees and Red Sox are starting to go away from that model), but they can't be afraid to spend money wisely in FA. STL from a market standpoint is similar to KC and if they can afford to throw money like they attempted to at Pujols, there is no reason why we shouldn't be able to in time. They don't need to get the best FA's nor do they need a $100+ million payroll, but they should be middle of the pack.

Kansas City if you include Topeka and St Joe is the same size as St louis, so there really isn't a whole lot of difference if you draw the same 50 mile radius around each city.

The market size thing is overblown probably though. The Cards had a huge advantage over most cities their size... they had their games blasting across the country on KMOX. And no competition to the south and west for years, so they built a huge fanbase because they won.

Even today their radio network is huge, it goes from Indiana to Mississippi to Oklahoma. The Royals have always had a huge network compared to a lot of teams too, but it's not what it used to be. Plus they've never had a station that could blast across 30 or 40 states a night. Now that doesn't matter as much but it's how the Cards built their cult fanbase.

Nail / head. The one thing I would add is, for this franchise to 100% turn the corner, the Glass' need to sell the team.

Theyre not baseball people and we as a fan base need this thing to go to someone that wants to win.

Hopefully the rumors that were out there a month or so ago have some validity.

They have a middle of the pack TV deal. They have a large radio network but theres not much money in radio. But as you mention KMOX is the reason for that large fan base and damn loyal. We were one of the worst teams in baseball in the late 70's and still drew 22K to games.

I sent my summer evenings listening to Jack Buck and Harry Carey on KMOX. My son is a 5th generation Cardinals fan. It's something passed down from father to son. It goes deeper than sports.

You'll see the true colors of Glass here in the next few weeks. If we are still within 5 games of 1st place an owner who is serious about winning would open up the wallet to bring in some talent. Glass\Moore will probably be looking to deal our in-house talent which would really scream this guy has no intention of ever seriously competing.

Good point. The way this team is going to succeed is to follow the Yankees of the late 90's and early 2000's model. Win with your core studs (which we have plenty of) and augment it with a high quality FA here and there.

At this point he can't just open up his pocketbook.

To get any players we would have to trade.

And are you insinuating we might have a fire sale and trade off our young guys for nothing while they are cheap too?

What moves? Myers and Odorizzi are untouchable at this point. This team may be 'close' in the division but they aren't that good at all. Gotta try to trade Francouer and Broxton by the deadline

Moore will work with whatever money Glass give him. Thus in the end it's the owner. Is he going to go to Moore and say "we are in this thing and I want you to do all you can to put us in a position for a run and I will take on more payroll if need be"? Or is he going to say "I really don't think it matters just work with what you have and if you can do something great but we aren't taking on higher payroll"?

Any team, imo, that is 5 games out at the AS break has a legit shot at their division and should make whatever changes they need to make and can make to better the team for a run. In our case it would be pitching. Frenchy can go, I am sure our overly-touted ML system has some talent we could trade though we will be picking up someone else's contract that will be high $ if all works out well.

Point is are we going to try and set ourselves up for a run in August and September or are we going to set ourselves up to call up rookies and give them a look?

This isn't the year to go "ALL IN". If we can buy at the deadline without giving up Myers or Odoreasy then we should.

Those two should be untouchable IMO.

But none of this is what your original post said.

You said they would probably be looking to DEAL our in house talent but not take more money on. So we would be giving up young cost controlled players for nothing I guess. You never mentioned bringing up young guys and actually playing them in your first post.

I'm fine with those. We have the bullpen to fill in the closer role and with Myers knocking on the door Frenchy is expendable.

If a top of the rotation guy is available at the deadline, I'd be fine with moving some prospects. They would have to have 3 years left or agree to a long term contract for it to be worth it though.
