Twenty-year-old models which have suggested serious ice loss in the eastern Antarctic have been compared with reality for the first time – and found to be wrong, so much so that it now appears that no ice is being lost at all.

“Previous ocean models . . . have predicted temperatures and melt rates that are too high, suggesting a significant mass loss in this region that is actually not taking place,” says Tore Hattermann of the Norwegian Polar Institute, member of a team which has obtained two years’ worth of direct measurements below the massive Fimbul Ice Shelf in eastern Antarctica — the first ever to be taken.

According to a statement from the American Geophysical Union, announcing the new research:

It turns out that past studies, which were based on computer models without any direct data for comparison or guidance, overestimate the water temperatures and extent of melting beneath the Fimbul Ice Shelf. This has led to the misconception, Hattermann said, that the ice shelf is losing mass at a faster rate than it is gaining mass, leading to an overall loss of mass.

The team’s results show that water temperatures are far lower than computer models predicted. . .

Hatterman and his colleagues, using 12 tons of hot-water drilling equipment, bored three holes more than 200m deep through the Fimbul Shelf, which spans an area roughly twice the size of New Jersey. The location of each hole was cunningly chosen so that the various pathways by which water moves beneath the ice shelf could be observed, and instruments were lowered down.

First, they should be consutling scientists instead of 20-year-old models.

Second, assuming this is all correct, it applies to the eastern Antarctic. Did they discuss, like, the rest of the world?

I was just about to say the same thing. Sure, they're pretty, but the odds are that they have no expertise at all on the complexities of global climate. This is just another example of how attractive people get preferential treatment in our society.

When did Obama say this was his top issue?

"President Obama is quoted in a New Yorker column by hooked-in journalist Ryan Lizza as believing the most important issue to address in his second term would be climate change

“Obama has an ambitious second-term agenda, which, at least in broad ways, his campaign is beginning to highlight. The President has said that the most important policy he could address in his second term is climate change (italics mine), one of the few issues that he thinks could fundamentally improve the world decades from now. He also is concerned with containing nuclear proliferation.”

. . .Tens of millions of people out of work or underemployed; pension funds at risk; the entitlement crisis is getting worse every day it is unaddressed; the oncoming “fiscal cliff” threatens to throw us into another recession (predicted by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office; Taxmaggedon begins on January 1st; our deficit is enormous and we have accumulated trillions of dollars of debt under his presidency with nothing to show for it other than high unemployment and high debt; and Barack Obama believes climate change trumps these concerns?"

Try to keep up with what HFC says is Obama's top priority. It changes depending on what Breitbart is reporting that day.

When did Obama say this was his top issue? It isn't a top issue for him now that he knows voters understand his energy policy is a disaster. He's flying under the radar using agencies under his control to do his bidding which is supposedly making air we breath here cleaner while destroying our economy.

If you ever bitched about Bush dragging us into an unjust war you should be doing the same with Obama and his belief he knows better than us even if we turn into a third world country. The guy is an idiot.

Rip Rap should be along shortly to explain to us how this ice isn't as icy as the ice they measured in the ice age before this ice age now.

Or something.
