Maurice Sendak's Final Interview: 'I Though About Killing President Bush'

Naturally, touching memorial services were held all over the country after this beautiful spirit's death last May...

Just imagine what would have been said about someone who dreamed of killing Hussein...

In a final interview previewed shortly after his death in May, 'Where The Wild Things Are' author Maurice Sendak let loose on former president George W. Bush, Laura Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

Here's the relevent portion of the interview:

SENDAK: Bush was president, I thought, “Be brave. Tie a bomb to your shirt. Insist on going to the White House. And I wanna have a big hug with the vice president, definitely. And his wife, and the president, and his wife, and anybody else that can fit into the love hug.”

GROTH: A group hug.

SENDAK: And then we’ll blow ourselves up, and I’d be a hero. [Groth laughs.] To hell with the kiddie books. He killed Bush. He killed the vice president. Oh my God.

GROTH: I would have been willing to forgo this interview. [Sendak laughs.]

SENDAK: You would have forgotten about it. It would have been a very brave and wonderful thing. But I didn’t do it; I didn’t do it.

The author, one of current president Barack Obama's favorite storytellers (Obama once read Sendak's 'Where The Wild Things Are' to a group of children on the White House lawn), was no stranger to controversy, often ranting against e-books, blogs and other random targets.

The interview went largely unnoticed until appearing on MSNBC's website late Tuesday night.

Gasp! We must get this seditious crap out of our school libraries!

I never cared much for Where the Wild Things Are, even as a kid. My kids didn't seem impressed with it either.

I preferred Yertl the Turtle.

Hope he is happy sucking demon dick in the pits of hell for eternity, getting raped by wild things repeatedly.

I saw an interview with Maurice Sendak awhile back, and I thought then that he's a weird guy and a jerk. Still, I love "Where the Wild Things Are", and always will.

I try to separate the art from the artist. Roman Polanski is a rapist and probably should be in prison, yet I still love Chinatown, and Rosemary's Baby.

Killing the president is totally rational thought.

Not cool.

This is where we have come to?

Kill? No.

Knock the flesh mask right off of his lizard face? Yes.

Talk about a wild rumpus.

I could have gotten behind a Dennis Hastert administration.

What a whacko.

And the movie sucked too.

What a whacko.

And the movie sucked too.

It did. 30 minutes in my kids were like, "Do we have to watch this?"
