NEW YORK (AP) Southern California is No. 1 in the AP Top 25, tossing off the weight of NCAA sanctions and returning to a familiar place in the rankings - with a boost from LSU's problems.

USC earned the top spot in The Associated Press' preseason college football poll for the seventh time in school history and the first time in five seasons, edging out No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 LSU.

The Trojans received 25 of a possible 60 first-place votes from a media panel in a close vote. USC received 1,445 points. Defending national champion Alabama had 17 first-place votes and 1,411 points while LSU, the Crimson Tide's SEC rival, got 16 first-place votes and 1,402 points.

Oklahoma was fourth with a single first-place vote and Oregon was fifth. Michigan, at No. 8, received the only other first-place vote.

The Tigers were poised to start the season No. 1 before Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu got kicked off the team a week ago.

In light of that development, the AP extended the voting deadline. Before Mathieu was dismissed, reportedly for failed drug tests, LSU had received 28 of a possible 60 first-place votes. USC was a close second with 22 first-place votes and Alabama was third with nine.

The USA Today coaches' poll, which was released Aug. 2, had LSU at No. 1, followed by Alabama and USC.

Rounding out the top 10 in the AP rankings, Georgia was No. 6, followed by Florida State and Michigan. No. 9 South Carolina and No. 10 Arkansas give the Southeastern Conference half of the first 10 teams.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/football/ncaa/08/18/preseason-ap-poll.ap/index.html

The rest of the Top 25 was heavy on Big 12 and Big Ten teams.

Big 12 newcomer West Virginia was 11th, followed by Big Ten rivals Wisconsin and Michigan State.

The Big 12 also placed Texas (No. 15), Oklahoma State (No. 19), TCU (No. 20) and Kansas State (No. 22) in the rankings to give the league six teams overall, matching the SEC for the most.

No. 23 Florida is the sixth SEC squad.

The Big Ten added Nebraska (No. 17) and Ohio State (No. 18) for a total of five teams. The Buckeyes, in their first season under coach Urban Meyer, are banned for the postseason this season because of NCAA sanctions.

Defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Clemson (No. 14) and Virginia Tech (No. 16) give the ACC three teams in the Top 25.

No. 21 Stanford is the third Pac-12 team in the poll.

No. 24 Boise State is ranked in the preseason for the fourth straight year and No. 25 Louisville is the only Big East school in the rankings.

Already lost two defensive ends for the season. Starting middle linebacker from last year has been sitting out a lot during fall practice. The defense was always going to be a question mark, but even more so now.

Can't wait to see Lame Kiffin, the biggest douchebag coach in collegiate athletics, fall flat on his face. USC always seems to fuck it up somehow whether it's losing to UCLA on the last game of the year, blowing it against Oregon State, or falling to Arizona State. They always choke. Probably because their coach chokes on dicks.

Season of low expectations for the Hawkeyes. Probably go 5-0 to start, and win one more after that. Hopefully new offensive coordinator lets them throw it around the yard a little bit.

"The Cornhuskers have won at least nine games in every season since 1962 but six: 1967-68, 2002, 2004-5 and 2007. Just as a comparison, let’s hold the rest of college football’s historical elite to the same standard. Alabama has 30 such seasons, if you include 1993, over that same span; Georgia has 23; L.S.U. 20; Michigan 30; Notre Dame 21; Ohio State 30, if we count the wins vacated in 2010; Oklahoma 27; Penn State 30, if you count each season since vacated by the N.C.A.A.; U.S.C. 24, if you include 2005; Tennessee 23; and Texas 28"

If you want a very average program look at Iowa. Which is ironic considering you cheer for them because KU sucks.

USC will be tough. Went 10-2 last year, should be better this year and if they survive Oregon will probably be in the NCG against the SEC winner. #1 ? maybe, maybe not but definitely top 3.

Texas on the other hand is not the 15th best team in the country. They may not even be the 4th best team in the Big 12.

Alabama is going to be good. Their offensive line is going to be great and Trent Richardson's clone (Lacy - 6 ft. 220 lb.) is ready to go. Their defense is going to be ridiculas. It will be like when Auburn played Oregon in the National Championship. Bama's linebackers will be as fast as Michigan's QB. I will be suprised if Michigan can make a game of it.

The best game of the weekend will be Clemson vs. Auburn. That will be one to watch.

As for USC, all they have to do is beat Oregon twice. If they make it to the National Championship, I hope they play an SEC team. No more split Championship Bullshit. Auburn and LSU should have got to play them in years past and they always find a way out of it. In my opinion, college football just wants a western team to do well for ratings. There is absolutely no other reason USC should be ranked #1 over Alabama or LSU.

Tulsa- Win

Kansas State- W (first time in Ames in five years)
@ Oklahoma St- W (No Weeden or Blackmon)
Baylor-W (No RG3)
Oklahoma- toss up
@ Texas - toss up
@ Kansas- W
West Virginia- toss up

Under CPR there has been a major upset every year. Winning in Lincoln first time in 30+ years, beating Texas for the first time in history, and beating #2 Oklahoma State. Its Oklahoma's turn to fall.

Iowa State and West Virginia fans are pegging that to be a new rivalry(I was actually surprised to hear WVU fans saying it would be us first)... its on Black Friday and Friday night games have been good to us under CPR.

I am not breaking your balls, but do you think ISU's influx of talent is the result of Chizik's recruiting or the new coach's?

New coaches. Chiz did have a few nice pieces for CPR his first few years... but the majority of the talent is from the new era. Really I don't know what Iowa State has been doing in years past. But Rhoads brought in the great idea of recruiting guys that are tall and athletic and building them up for a few years.

I actually was watching at interview with RB Woody today. He was talking about how LB Jake Knott had to play as a true freshman because we just didn't have talent or depth. He went on to say Jakes brother Luke is a carbon copy of him but there is so much depth now that he will for sure be redshirted.

Years past we've just had a DL that was too short and didn't weigh enough. The bigger ones were just fat. This new staff is bringing a lot of potential, and our strength and conditioning coach has been great at putting good weight on them. These next few years you will really start to see hes recruits blossom as they reach their junior and senior years.
