View Full Version : Chiefs Chiefs Lose To Rams: 11 Obervations From The Game

by Patrick Allen (Arrowheadaddict.com)

The Kansas City Chiefs fell back down to earth tonight, getting spanked by the St. Louis Rams.

The Rams took home the coveted Governorís Cup for the second straight season.

We will get into plenty of specifics tomorrow and next week but for now, here are my observations from tonightís loss.

1. Without Flowers, the Chiefsí secondary is suspect

Right off the bat the Rams went to work exploiting Jalil Brown and Javier Arenas. Sam Bradford may have had a down year in 2011 but he is miles better than John Skelton and Kevin Kolb and he proved it tonight.

The Chiefs should immediately start shopping for a veteran corner for insurance.

2. Turnovers and sloppy play

The defense got a clown suit put on them on the Ramsí opening drive but Baldwinís fumble on KCís first offensive really set the night into a downward spiral.

3. Lack of focus

Whether it was arrogance from their stomping of the Arizona Cardinals or just a bad night, the young Chiefs need to learn to play consistent football. Baldwinís fumble and offensive penalties that killed another drive against the Ramsí backups showed the Chiefs just didnít come to play. Theyíd better change that next week.

4. KCís offense still looks good

Despite Baldwinís fumble and the penalties, the Kansas City offense was still pretty effective. Matt Cassel finished the night with 13 of 18 for 142 yards. Jamaal Charles looked good, carrying the ball three times for 17 yards. He also had two catches for 18 yards. Peyton Hillis struggled to break free but he looked good down on the goal line and punched in another TD.

5. Ricky Stanzi is a mess

There is no other way to put it. Stanzi got his chance with the second team and he completed only three of four passes for 24 yards and an interception. He looked skittish in the pocket and it seems he hasnít quite learned to deal with the pressure of the NFL game.

6. Brady Quinn is the clear winner to backup Matt Cassel

Quinn came in and got the job done (5 of 7 and a TD) with KCís scrubs on the third team. Is he a guy you want starting? Hell no. But he has looked competent enough that should he need to play with the first team, he could probably manage the game.

7. Were the Chiefs more vanilla?

Was it just me or did it seem like the play calling on both sides of the ball was more vanilla this week than last? Were the Chiefs pulling back a little bit? Or did it just seem that way because they were getting pushed around?

8. Cassel was strong again

Matt Cassel had another calm, poised performance. He seems to have a good grip on Dabollís offense and he is doing a nice job of getting the ball to the right receiver. His roll out completion to Dexter McCluster while being pressured was particularly impressive. He didnít panic, he extended the play and he made a hell of a throw.

9. McCluster had another solid night

Dexter again led all receivers with three receptions for 23 yards.

10. Bellamy likely wonít make the roster

Josh Bellamy has been a star in camp but he hasnít shown up during the games. Part of the problem is the poor play of KCís backup QBís but Quinn is competent enough to get open receivers the ball. Bellamy isnít getting open.

11. Walter saw this coming

Walter over at Walter Football has never been the biggest Chiefs fan. Recently, however, he has been high on KC because of all the talent on the roster. This week, in his predictions for the second week of the preseason, Walter predicted that the Rams would come out on top. His reasoning is what interests me.

Outcomes of preseason games rarely have anything to do with the talent on the respective teams, since the majority of the games are played by second-, third- and fourth-stringers.

Some coaches care about winning preseason games, while others do not. Thus, betting on coaches with great preseason records is an easy way to make money.

Here are recent NFL Betting Trends: Preseason Records for every coach in the NFL.

The Rams were embarrassed last Sunday. Jeff Fisher will probably want to secure his first victory as head coach of the Rams.

Was Jeff Fisher digging just a little deeper into his bag of tricks tonight to wash out the bad taste last weekís Rams lost left in his mouth? Iím not making excuses for KCís performance but the Rams sure did need this win and they got it. The Chiefs, on the other hand, needed a reality check after the way they handled the Rams. They got it.

In closing:

The local guys on the radio are already trumpeting all the ďwork the Chiefs have to doĒ and the ďproblems and limitations of this team.Ē

Sorry but I donít buy it. The Chiefs were sloppy and flat for sure but I saw signs of the things that made KC successful a week ago. I thought the offense, save a couple of mistakes, still looked very promising. The defense didnít show much but I did think they were doing a nice job of getting pressure on Sam Bradford. The problem was that the secondary wasnít doing their job and Bradford was getting the ball out.

How the Chiefs respond in their big third preseason game against the Seahwaks next week will tell us a lot about this team. There will be a lot of negative talk about the Chiefs this week but donít let it get you down. This team is just as talented as it was when you woke up Saturday morning.

There are bumps on the road to greatness.

Stanzi $#it the bed.

Most the night he looked like year 1 TrINT. Guy was standing in the pocked for 12 seconds, scrambling around, with everyone in the room screaming "GET RID OF IT! GET RID OF IT!"

Between being the youngest team in the league, breaking camp and moving back to KC, on top of a good first outing these guys lost their focus. Better to happen now than later. Romeo has to get them refocused this week.

I thought J Powe did good & got some pressure too. I like him & got high hopes that they have a good rotation between the three to keep fresh and strong & gain the experience needed for the position.

I think it would be cool to see Powe become the dominant force at NT. D Poe can be in for obvious pass plays. I don't know they both have long ways to go but I'm on a Powe waggon.

I think Pioli was impressed with Poe that he played every down, but what good is that if he isn't busting through the line. A good rotation & I think we can get that out of our DTs.

Carr was a part of the team when they were getting their doors blown off the last few preseasons too. And it wasn't Routt getting burnt yesterday. So I don't even understand why people are bitching.

Or the Cards are that bad, and we are somewhere in between the Cards and Rams in terms of talent level

Without Flowers, and now Lewis, our secondary will be that bad. I am not sure most fans are prepared for that after the secondary was mostly a strength with Flowers and Carr the last four years with some minor holes at only covering TEs. Now we will get beat all over the field if they dont fix it. Guys were WIDE open for Sam Bradford against our "First Team" Defense. It was ugly

Routt was a proactive signing to the loss of Carr.

Pioli knew by the time that he signed Routt that Carr was gone.

If Carr had been re-signed, I highly doubt that Routt is a Chief.

The Cards were that bad and Jeff Fisher lit a fire underneath his team's ass while we read our press clippings. Perfect formula for disaster.

Romeo is not the kind of coach to babysit like Haley and that is not good when you have one of the youngest teams in the NFL. Romeo better have have a "hit man" type of coach on his staff to do the dirty work this week of getting them focused:rolleyes:

Looked to me like all Jeff did was have his guys outplay ours. The Rams didn't do anything fancy. Their 1 OL beat our 1 DL and their Wr's beat our secondary. The KC offense couldn't get anything going because it kept making mistakes - again, the Rams did nothing fancy - the Chiefs made too many mistakes.

The key is that we are never as bad as we think after a game, nor are we as good. In today's NFL the weaker team can win when it is hungry and prepared.

We defeated the unbeaten Packers last year. That does not mean we were better than them. The Rams are not better than us as a team. They won a game. There is no reason for alarm. If anything, this loss will be a wake-up call for the players that thought they could just coast to victory.

I disagree with him on Cassel. I thought he looked a lot like last year. On that play where he scrambled out of the pocket and threw to Dexter he got nervous and left the pocket way to early instead of going through his progression.

The timeout. Bad. Need to save those for end of the half and game. Here we go again.

I know Bowe hasn't been in yet and Baldwin fumbled, but jeez, 3 Quarters of play and how many balls have been caught by Baldwin and Breaston? Okay, we got it we can work the RB's and TE's how about a down field passing game to the WR's. Better get it going, but that has been his weakness, standing in the pocket, letting plays develop and delivering after reading everything.

I don't blame the D as much as giving the Rams credit. Bradford is good and was on with the quick short slants. When the WR gets inside the CB and the ball is delivered accurately it's almost unstoppable. I would take Bradford on this team as our QBOTF in a heart beat.

Steven Jackson is good. I said this last week watching him against the Colts. He looked fresh and healthy again.
Not the same ol' sorry ass Rams. They aren't gonna win the SB, but they aren't terrible either. Gotta give a little respect is all.
