WTF???

Is the basketball shoe world ready for a $300 shoe?

The market might get tested when the LeBron X is released later this year.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that a Nike Plus-enabled version of the shoe -- that has motion sensors in the shoe to track various metrics including how high the player jumps -- will retail for $315. Although Matt Powell, an analyst for market retail tracking firm SportsOneSource, tells ESPN that he believes the price will be $290.

Nike spokesman Brian Strong would not comment as to the accuracy of the price.

In 1986, Nike's Air Jordan II broke the $100 basketball sneaker barrier. Sixteen years later, the company hit the $200 price tag when it released the Air Jordan XVII.

Despite a rough economic environment, Nike has been able to pass on the rising costs of materials to its consumers with little resistance due to the premium associated with its high-end product.

SportsOneSource reported last month that sales of sneakers that retail for more than $100 were up 30 percent on the year and sales of basketball shoes that cost more than $100 were up 50 percent. Between the Nike, Jordan and Converse brands, Nike owns roughly 95 percent of the basketball shoe market in the United States.

While many will be fixated on the price, Powell said it's being blown out of proportion. He estimates that Nike will make only about 50,000 pairs of the Nike Plus-enabled LeBron X's compared to 200,000 to 300,000 pairs of the regular version of the shoe, which he expects to sell in the $175 range.

"This is all about electronic componentry," Powell said. "The plus version of this shoe is a very expensive shoe for a very specific audience: the high school or college athlete that wants to improve their game by measuring their progress by wearing the shoes."

Meh, its not as bad as the article makes it seem. The majority of the shoes are still $175 with a special edition with a chip in it for 300. That said no way in hell I would buy it

Yeah, it is kind of a false article.. Even though there will be some dumbshits to buy the shoe for plying pickup games.. It is more of a serious training shoe, for metrics for jumping increase.. Which is still stupid as it can be done without a chip..

Heh, because $175 for athletic shoe is quite reasonable.

That's crazy. I used to never spend more than $50-70. I finally broke down and bought a pair of Air Jordans last Fall ($120) and have been very happy with them. But I can understand the hs or college athletes wanting it to measure progress. It's not for the average Joe like me who is playing pickup games at the Y.

You wouldn't believe the number of guys I see wearing Addizeros ($130) at the Y. We gave my son a pair for Christmas.

Yea, that's nuts. Is there really that much difference in performance between a $50-70 shoe and a $150+ shoe?

No you're right. That is ridiculous. But I will say that having a good pair of basketball shoes makes a big difference.

There is a difference. Whether the cost is worth it is up to the player. My son and I only wear ours when we hoop at the Y. So they last longer. We're both still wearing them and they're still in decent shape.

The most I've ever spent on a pair of shoes was $250 dollar for walking shoes. We spent three weeks in Italy walking on cobblestone streets and it was completely and totally worth it.

I think the most I've spent on Cross Trainers was like $125. Again, totally worth it.

It's just hype and gadgetry for the Plus. The $200 for the "normal" shoes is the ridiculous figure, imo.

The $300 is likely going to have fuelband type performance where it syncs to a computer and does all kinds of gimickry. They admit that it's for a specific niche target audience. It's really just about Nike trying to push the envelope and merge fitness with tech, which has been an R&D/marketing ploy for them for a while.

They want to be seen as on the cutting edge, and they want to develop new markets and technologies. This does it.

It's not even that I'm frugal... although I guess I am. It's more that I have no need for fancy shoes and I don't think they need to cost more than half a tank of gas. I like plain white tennys and you can get good ones cheap.

I'd say it's because I'm old maybe but I've always been that way with shoes.

I'm not a fashion bug, just functional. Growing up I never had to have the popular "Fubu, Tommy Hilfiger, Dock Martens" because everyone else did. I didn't want that overpriced crap. If it was some weird off brand and it fit me well or didn't make me look homosexual (NTTATWWT), I wore it.

I'm all for comfort... jeans, t-shirt and sneaks til the day I die :D

ehh, i have over 40 pairs of nike/jordans. highest ive paid is $315 for the DMP pack.

but this shoe is not for the avg person, you gotta remember that nike is in the front running of mixing technology with apparel/sneakers. they were the first to incorporate computer chips in their running shoes with the Nike+ system that is co-done with apple. now, they are taking that tech. and putting it in the basketball world. and the LeBron line is perfect to put this in because the jordan line uses outdated tech. with their retros. every lebron has gotten lighter and more advanced with every release. from using teflon to make the shoe stronger to having full air zoom(which is well worth the $160+ price, its like walking on clouds)

i wont be buying the x, as i prefer the LeBron 8s and 9 series. but i wouldn't be surprised if this tech. made its way over to the kobe or Durant line in the future.

$300 for LBJ's? Thank you, no. I played very competitive high school and AAU hoops and I never spent more than $120 on shoes. Let me re-phrase that, my parents bought me 1 pair of Jordans in high school.

The only pair of shoes/boots I have bought myself that is close to that price was the Red Wing boots I bought for work. I had to special order them, because they don't carry adult sizes in the store. They cost me $180, but well worth it, I have had them for 4 or 5 years at this point, and I will get a couple more years out of them.

Buy one pair, get second pair half off.

Or buy two pair, get third pair free.

(And I buy nothing over $40 a pair, so I end up getting them for $30 each pair or less.)
